Nooooooooooo!!!! Who wrecked Ringil???

Ah well, its still a nice find at the 1.5 hour mark. Just laying on the ground in the Mimic's Quest and I was just sure it was Worpal Blade. Damn, all these swords look alike these days ...

That has to be like 30 Frodo's in a row ... Geez. Ah well, my dex is maxed out anyway so it is probably for the best.

Lots of early melee damage! Nothing like getting end game weapons in the first 2 hours but I'm nervous about disenchanters (e.g. Alberich as a quest monster, or even Hagen).

Still burgling! The weak Old Castle reward actually fits rather nicely and I picked up Padre as well. Now this is a bit too heavy for a rogue, but it covers Fire and Chaos resistance so will have to do.

I'd really like telepathy, preferably in amulet form, though this will leave me rather stupid as far as spellcasters go. Ah well, I'm keeping my super con so New Life is not an option :D

Tired of no shards, I decided to go with Excalibur, another great weapon found ridiculously early (hours and hours ago). But, this means I give up something like 8 points of Intelligence! Sigh ...

I'm running quests, but I think I better stop for a bit. Kenshirou at L56 was a *huge* wake up call. You would think +40 speed with 12 healing and 40 or so CCW would be plenty, but you would be very incorrect! Probably, I would have needed at least 20 healing to be comfortable ... As it stood, I kept having to teleport away and march back after chugging CCW once my healing ran out. And in the end, I managed him with just 500hp and no healing left. My round of attacks failed to kill him, but he started to run away so I chased and finished him off. Which was risky since he did upwards of 700hp of melee damage a handful of times during the fight. So with 500, I was meat ... At least I thought I was. Anyway, he dropped Fingolfin which helps out my AC and melee a bit.

I'd rank Kenshirou about the same level of difficulty as Wahha-Man. Your going to need the same amount of resources. Probably, I would have done better with Buckland and mithril shots but I wasn't really expecting that guy.

So, next quests were Jisisl (maybe 1% as powerful as Kenshirou), Iketa followed by Biketal (together, they hardly merit 5% of Kenshirou). Glaaki is a joke and then Spaghetti Monster ... Again, nothing. Its like going from Hell Wyrms to fighting Snotlings! But I don't want to push my luck ...

On 2.7.2012 02:44 chris wrote:
Ha! OK, I knew I should have quit the quests. See, I even said I should have quit. But no! I had to do one more :)

Atlas is tougher than Kenshirou! Fortunately, I had 20 healings (5 staves) and managed to kill him only using 16! And my 40 CCW of course (which is about 4 to 5 additional healings).

Do I need to start carrying 30 healing for these quests? I thought I was a pretty decent melee guy ...

What's the difference between "Resistance" and "High Resistance"?

On 2.7.2012 14:05 chris wrote:
"Low Resistances": Acid, Fire, Cold, Electricity and Poison

"High Resistances": Everything else (Light, Dark, Shard, Blindness, Confusion, Sound, Nether, Nexus, Chaos and Disenchantment).

Armor of "Resistance" gives the four basic resistances, and occasionally poison as well. Sometimes you also get one random high resistance too.

Armor of "High Resistance" never gives a low resistance. Rather, you get one or more of the high resistances.

On 2.7.2012 18:51 Djabanete wrote:
Isn't that a bit counter-intuitive? Armors of Resistance will tend to seriously outclass armors of High Resistance. I think it's a good idea for an ego type, but the name would make one think High Resistance was the superior item.

a) Hard Studded Leather of Resistance (-1) [7,+20] {PoNt}
b) Hard Studded Leather of High Resistance (-1) [7,+17] {Di}
c) Hard Studded Leather of High Resistance (-1) [7,+15] {Cf}
d) Padded Armour of Resistance [5,+9] {Bl}

If I found these four in the dungeon and only had two slots for haul, I'd definitely leave (b) and (c) behind. Perhaps High Resistance needs to provide 3-5 resistances? What do you think? Have you found the ego type useful at all?

On 2.7.2012 21:34 chris wrote:
They work like Dragon Armor ... They might only come with 1 or 2 resistances but occasionally, you can get one with lots of resistances if you are lucky. I think 3-5 would just be too much ... Consider that BDSM is probably one of the best armors in the game and it only has 4 high resistances!

I'm not sure I like Armor of Resistance coming with an extra high resistance now that I think about it (Elvenkind is OK, though).

On 2.7.2012 21:38 chris wrote:
Also, what to keep is highly situational. Disenchantment resistance, for example, is extremely hard to come by, as is Shards resistance. For your list, I'd probably take (a) and (c) if I could only pick two. Confusion resistance is rather common, though.

On 3.7.2012 01:05 Djabanete wrote:
Those are all good points. I'd be very sad if Balance DSM was made obsolete by an ego item!

I guess my problem is that High Resistance will be junk 95% of the time. Most High Resistance armors will give one resist, which is just not enough to see use. Even two resists is very marginal --- it's extremely rare, for example, to see characters using Chaos/Law/Pseudo DSMs. The body slot is one of the most competitive equipment slots, and people usually need plenty of resistances covered by their armor to unlock better weapons and rings.

I always hoard just-in-case armors, but I practically always find myself wearing whatever covers the most resists (or at least 4+). So although I like the idea of finding a shiny, one-in-a-hundred High Resistance armor that can break up the midgame hegemony of Isildur, Arvedui, Caspanion, Rohirrim, Elvenkind & co., I wonder whether it's worth the cost: finding lots more junk armors [1] that require full *ID*. I also think the name is misleading, making one think that it's better than Resistance, when in practice it's likely to be essentially a bottom-of-the-barrel randart.

What if it were an artifact? The Bar Chain Mail [2] of High Resistance: resist basic elements, poison, and one or more high elements (like dragon gear).

Or another idea: add a Resistance activation to current High Resistance model. Too good?

[1] And by junk, I mean "gosh this armor is cool and I wish I could wear it, but it would only fix one resistance hole and open four more..."

[2] Because Bar Chain Mail needs some artifact love =)

This is probably only the third or fourth time The Serpent of Chaos has killed me. But I tried to push it ...

Let's see, my earlier comparison with Kenshirou vs Wahha was a bit favorable btw. Kenshirou is about 30% more difficult.

But the Destroyer was beyond me. I mean, I plunked down 50 healing on the guy but only got 6 stars off. At that point, I was out of resources. +36 speed with reflection and 511 damage per round is just too weak.

Never fear. I'll just take my remaining resources and sprint for the end. Should be enough, no? Actually, no.

Oberon was easy, though I had to sit next to him quaffing potions every single turn for about 6 rounds as he just blasted me with raw power. About 500 to 600hp ever single freaking turn, which is amazing. But I got him, and he never summoned.

The Serpent was another matter. In the end, I plunked down 30+ healing, 20+ *healing*, 5+ life, 10 *destruction* but only managed 6 stars. He just kept summoning way more than I could handle. I ended up getting gorged mid way thru despite my precautions to not begin the battle on a full stomach. I was down to what you see here: 28 Healing, 10 *healing* and 1 Life and it was going to come up short. And this despite 75% melee accuracy with 700 or so damage per round. I really don't remember him being that tough ... But I would extrapolate to needing 50+ *healing*, which, actually, is about what I want in order to feel comfortable. His favorite combo was to summon then shatter with earthquake criticals for 800 or so damage in a single round (no squares left for dodging).

Actually, that's not quite right. His favorite combo was summoning Ares and the Destroyer. I had a turn to teleport, but didn't take it as I knew my resources were not enough and failed to recognize that 'p' as Ares. The result was a 900hp death, thanks, primarily to Ares awesome melee prowess.

On 3.7.2012 04:40 kingvictory2003 wrote:
Ohhh maaaan, not a pretty death, being sandwiched between Ares, the Destroyer AND the Serpent. :(

I'm actually a bit surprised you needed that much healing...perhaps the slightly low AC had something to do with that? I want to say I've killed the Serpent with damage even a bit inferior to yours, but I probably had more AC. I'm sure you'll come back with a fine win next time though!

On 3.7.2012 13:56 chris wrote:
I think Sustain Con was a major weakness. After a few rounds of melee, my max hp were in the 800s which means heal or *heal* every other round. I'm pretty sure my AC was OK (It better be since I have max gear).

If you crunch the numbers, this guy is doing about 450 damage which is somewhat low. Put on a shield and that damage drops to 340 which is not enough. 400 damage per round is somewhat marginal for the end game. If you go too slow, the resources required to win explode exponentially ... I had a weak melee guy do it in hengband once, but he used almost 70k damage in the process (and had 1050hp with sustain con). This guy was heading for a similar damage experience, though probably a bit higher without the Sustain Con ... More turns spent healing mean either more damage sustained or more hp regenerated by the J if you teleport.
