Now its my turn to scum ... I actually can't believe my early luck. I did have to waste nearly 20 minutes digging for my armor, but it covers Poison which is necessary for my evil plan. Also required are fear resistance (got it), sustain strength (not yet), and no teleport (just picked up). Covering FA and SI from Sting is also quite welcome!

Now let's see if I can kill myself with macros!

Hm... killed pets don't drop stuff, right? Completely confused what your evil plan is... I get that you're probably killing spiders to heal, but you don't have an area attack? Unless you're planning on Meteor Swarm?

Pets must be disabled. The spiders are for XP. Interesting scheme... you guys are always finding new and sinister ways to break the game ;)

I can't have pets since that option is turned off. This makes the Trump realm pretty silly and useless ... Or does it?

The main problem with Summon Spiders is Fire, Fear, Teleport To, Poison and Strength Drain. In the end, the Fire is proving too much to handle, but its about time to stop anyway. The shops simply don't stock enough spellbooks, and the more you carry, the quicker they seem to burn.

The next and final phase requires Summon Reptile, but I'm not powerful enough for that just yet, so I guess I need to go kill stuff. Ideally, I would have +10 base speed and a better AC. Again, Fire, Fear and Poison will be problematic, but Summon Reptile is actually in a fireproof book so one simply needs to be powerful enough to kill hydras before they kill you. Blindness shouldn't be an issue, but telepathy might be nice.

I lost several Vanilla-town Trump Rogues in a row when I first figured out you could do this... I always got carried away and barely died from poison after escaping down the stairs. A little brinkmanship never hurt anybody, right? :)

You, of course, have mastered the art of spider scumming far better than I ever did. The amulet of anti-teleport is a nice touch!

After butchering Smaug, I decided it was time for the reptiles. However, I think I may have goosed the summoning code a bit too much as I was routinely getting 11 headed hydras, which are quite deadly. 7 heads are just annoying and are really slowing me down as I must continually rest (and then feed) in order to recast. But 11 heads are just downright nasty! Fortunately, single wielding Bloodspike was enough to prevail and now I am even dual wielding.

Dave, I have to ask. How do you do this with Fire Ants? Don't you starve? Don't you die? How do you do it so quickly? I'm routinely getting deep gashes and low hitpoint warnings, usually blinded as well. But I think I can hit L50 in perhaps another hour or so. Not as fast as you are, but I'm doing my best :D

Resources will be about 400 to 500 rations of food, and probably as many !CSW and CCW. This is why I don't understand the Cloning Pits ... You can't recall to town to restock!

On 16.4.2012 02:42 chris wrote:

About an hour subpar, yet, I think if I could have found blindness resistance, I could have shaved 1 or even 2 hours of this effort. There are two problems: [1] Every 0.5 to 2.0s you are blinded. [2] There is a bug whereby your rest macros are "Canceled" when blinded. So, my macro was something like \emac\e2222222288888888\eR&\r but the rest at the end would perpetually be "Canceled". This is highly annoying, but I can't figure out from a first glance at the code why this should be so.

Still, 45k kills and 21m xp in 5.5 hours is something for me to be proud of, even if it pales in comparison to the talents of others :D

One of the more challenging pits yet, despite my high level. What went wrong? Two words: Gnome Mages. Those guys run away (since they are low level) and hurl summons and the poor player, the summoning being indexed to the current level rather than the summoners innate wimpiness! I quickly got The Hoard and then nearly killed by Creeping Mithril Coins. Yes, even at L50 I cannot handle mithril coins ... With my low AC they simply cannot miss!

Ah, another mistake was forgetting !Heroism. Something put the fear of god into me, so then I could not attack and was reduced to running away, hoping for the fear to expire. I think it was the Its ... but I'm not sure.

But finally, an It clone dropped Werewindle and suddenly, I turned into a super human he-man, and the rest was easy. Rather a humbling experience, but that is what you get for scumming xp ...

On 16.4.2012 14:36 chris wrote:
I meant Creeping adamantite coins ... the fast ones. Mithril coins are pretty weak.

Now, the issue with the character is what to do now? As a rogue, my power comes from my equipment so even at L50, I'm fairly weak. I'm trying the Dragon's Lair and just barely managed a Hell Wyrm. Hmmm ... I guess I need that dagger?

On 16.4.2012 17:35 dzhang wrote:
Chris: What's taking you so long? (In terms of game days). I'm usually around Day 14 when I get out of the Cloning Pits at CL 50, having spent maybe 2-3 game days in there.

I usually go in with 30 Elvish Waybreads and 80 !oCCW, and have at least 20 Waybreads and 30 !oCCW left when I leave. Maybe your AC is too low? I've gone in with RedDSM before, just for the AC. Probably, Giant Fire Ants don't hit as hard as the Hydras? Burning my scrolls was definitely unavoidable, so that's why the Fire Ants trick only works with intrinsic ball or beam attacks.

On 16.4.2012 17:53 chris wrote:
Dave: Resting for blindness to wear off. Resting for mana to regen. That's why I also needed 500+ rations of food ... I was blinded many thousands of times. And I couldn't suck up the cuts, so I needed quite a few !CSW and !CCW as well.

When my AC was only 69, 11 heads hits whenever d142 > 45, which is quite often. They also have plasma bolts and a big single resisted fire breath, but while they came close to killing me quite a few times, I never died. I was also carrying potions of healing just in case.

On 16.4.2012 18:02 dzhang wrote:
You were mostly meleeing, right? Waiting for Blinding to wear off is just so you can cast Summon Reptile again?

Usually for Cloning Pits, I insist on 100+ AC, and that seems to be enough. I still need to burn maybe 30-50 !oCCW until I get high enough level to suck up the cuts. Levitation is not necessary though, so I will go in with a Ring of Flames for the extra AC. Stealth is also not necessary, but maybe that's just because I'm used to playing Sexy.

I've also had to quaff !oHealing when I had slow reflexes and didn't notice I was cut until something like 80 HP and Deep Gash...

Chris, I'm playtesting Polearm weaponmaster, since those seem to be unpopular, and now I see why. Here are a few proposed changes for balancing.

Knockback: Do a full round of attacks (with -20 tohit), and the monster is pushed back X squares at the end of the attacks, where X is the number of hits you land.

Piercing Strike: Passive ability (always active), no penalty tohit.

Reaping: If you kill at least 1 monster, you get 2 game counters of Wraithform, with +1 for each additional kill in the attack.

Oh, I also just noticed that Poseidon's trident doesn't have Slay Evil like it's supposed to. That makes the weapon much less desirable...

While we're on the topic of artifact tweaks, here's another couple suggestions.

Spear of Athena - Gain economize Mana, Blessed weapon.

Lyre of Apollo - Make pval +5 so it's at least stronger than Crimson.

I'm having a hard time coding up Piercing Strike as a passive ability, so I'm tempted to just leave as is. The main problem is that the whirlwind ability will no longer work ... I'll just remove the penalty to hit for now.
