I nearly always just sell Thieve's jewelry which usually consists of rings of aggravate monster, et. al. But I didn't recall ever finding an amulet before. Probably Adornment? Nah ...

Spit Acid was too weak/costly for Undead Mass farming, so I splattered them instead risking dreaded permanent stat drain and only managed L16 from The Sewer. The Orcs were easy, even with pseudo-aggravation, thanks to all the blood spraying about. And with Telepathy, I passed on an 8k ring of SI but bought a ring of fire resistance instead, and did DQI. An early skull drained my strength, but not enough to cause me to lose a blow.
I just purchased a slight weapon upgrade for 18k ... an extra d6 is not too much to write home about, but every little bit helps, no?
Since I am playing with no quests this build, I'll just need to find a good depth to wait for goodies. But first, I'll run the Orc Caves for the beloved ring of ice.

I'm just hanging out with the Orcs until a ring of FA spawns ... They are L20 rarity 1 objects so it shouldn't take too long. Whenever I have enough gold, I do the town circuit hoping to score FA that way as well. I did manage RBase for 48k, but I was only lacking lightning at the time, so that's not too huge. But it does free up my rings slots (for FA!!). There is a quest for FA, but you need to do the Mimic's quest first and that requires FA. Hmmmph!
After buying my resistance I was out of gold, so it took until CL25 to regain enough to warrant another town search. You are better off if you can town scum on every level up, but its harder to keep enough gold in the early game when one levels up quickly.
I should have enough Str/Dex for 3 blows with a Heavy Lance, so I'm looking for one of those as well.
And finally, I can detect traps! Of course, I skipped over rod of trap location and went straight to rod of detection, but I can't complain ... Detecting objects also speeds things up a bit.

Damn, I was really hoping to show off a Heavy Lance on my next dump, but even after relentless town scumming, I could not find one. Also in short supply are !RestoreLife and only 6 have been generated all game. I think I need to make the town Temple Restoration service restore life as well, as at this point in the game, you need 2 or 3 !RestoreLife every single trip down. Even with splatter and high speed, life drainers get double moves and lucky hits.
I waited until L29 before the Barrow Downs, hoping for either a Heavy Lance or, if really lucky, a Mace of Disruption. That would show those pesky Wights! But I did OK with 270ish damage, meaning my 90hp splatters generally killed. Emperors could get one-shot, but rarely did. So, I lost quite a bit of life and only managed 20k or 30k xp for the quest. Plus a got about 15 or so weak wight double moves to drain life ... Man, that's annoying (I started the quest at only +2 speed though).
Having repaired my initial abysmal life by drinking my first !NewLife, I now seek to build a bit at stat potion depth. Also high on my list is resist poison, and I'm definitely not going anywhere near the Cloning Pits without that. Heck, last time I only went in for the boots of FA reward (Frodo) and failed! I now have plenty of FA, including boots *and* gloves, but I'm using a ring? Insanity!

Much easier sans Planetars and Dracoliches, no? All I had was a wimpy Archpriest and he died promptly. I did forget about SI, but managed the Its notwithstanding.
And an early monster dropped my first Heavy Lance! Holy Cow that thing hits hard! Now I just need another gadzillion xp so I can slay sentient :)
I also just picked up Killing Spree, managing to level up towards the end of the Cloning Pits (done with a Staff of Speed). Let's see how it works out!

I'm almost ready for The Old Castle. I'd like a bit more base speed is all, and perhaps Hold Life too. Benkei is 40lbs so should be a nice upgrade to my Heavy Lance. Heck, I think I'll just sell out for it after a quick Killing Spree!
10 minutes with The Hoard at L42 = 650,000gp. With Killing Spree, I scored about 2000 counters, though I'm sure some have worn off by now.

First teleport took me to the Enchantress/Sorcerer, both quickly dispatched. Then, I made a dash for the Raals, my first mistake. 6 !Healing? I was double resisting, and resist nether. But not Mana bolts!
Even the Vampire Lords seem to hit hard. Very puzzling, but I think I will still pull it off thanks to lucky finds of Jack's Cloak, Sacred Knights (both with FA) and a RoS +8.
Oh, after the Dracolich, the Walls opened up the world and it was me vs. 3 Vampire Lords, 2 Anti-paladins, 2 Ancient Red Dragons, a Death Knight, a summoned Shoggoth, and a bunch of other summoned monsters. And the Death Drake. Maybe that was the problem? But those Raals were a bad omen ...

Out with 810hp, AC185, +12 speed but hasted to +22. 6 !Healing. 12 !CCW. 3 ?ProtEvil (found 1). Superb Stealth.
I had a tough start and usually I leave the Raals for last. That was my mistake, I think, since I could not teleport once I engaged them and this caused me to invade my precious stockpile of healing. I think it was only 5 !Healing required as I used one later versus the Vampire Lords/Fallen Angel/Shoggoth army.
Once I cleared the left side, and paused to lament my woes publicly, the quest was a snap. ProtEvil handled the Titans, and the Iron Lich did not summon.

Awesome blow still requires me to roll a hit which is in the 70% to 80% range these days. Speaking of misses, I lined up on Scatha and whiffed 3x. He wakes up and smirks. Add in +115 damage per strike and effective critical boosts of (negligible) 11.7 (call it 12) to get +127 damage. So 671 per strike times 3 strikes per round gives 2013. Man, this guy is fun to play. Danger is everywhere, especially taking out big nether breathers without nether resistance. Actually, these were probably safer than the 3 Cyberdemons I dispatched, as even with shard resistance, rockets do a cool 500.
Also, Slay Sentient costs 100hp and fails at 27% (33% when you first lean it). I failed myself down to a mere 600hp a couple of times, just so I could kill a foe in 2 rounds. But its good fun.
Killing Spree is very situational. For vaults, it can't be beat. If there are packs of Trolls/Hounds/Ogres nearby, again, it is sweet. But many times the monster densities are just too low, so I recommend an alternate means of haste. Me, I'm just playing slow whenever I can't spam the spree. But if you clear a nest of 95 critters, then you stay hasted for quite some time. So you better charge up before the Serpent!
I need at least 3 more points of speed, and I guess I'll get those from ring upgrades. Once you hit +35 speed, your temporary haste should not trigger a Dispel Magic. For the Death Force, having all of your counters disappear would be a disaster! In this regard, do *not* use double resistance against the Serpent. Auras shouldn't be an issue when your *GREAT* hits are dishing out 1200.

A bubble vault on L85, currently infested with Unmakers, Destroyer, Raphael, and an epic good vs. evil battle, I can only raid the tiny straight corridor at the bottom. Still, this has proved good for Elemental of Ching-Rong, Soulkeep, RoS +10, Bruce Lee and Brand. Earlier I found BoS +6, but I might consider ditching them for Thror or *gasp* Shiva's should I prove so lucky.
The problem before was speed and aggravate. Cyberdemons would pelt me down before I could get into melee range. Trying ASC? Well, there is no perfect ASC these days unless you have passwall, and I seemed to be constantly getting splashed or even taking full shots before I could gain melee range. I've start quaffing healing like mad, though, and uniques are dropping like flies. If I get next to my foe, then they seldom last more than a couple of rounds which has a nice berserker feel to it. Well, the big guys might make it to round 6 or 7, but now that I have Death Force, I wouldn't count on it!
Speaking of which, I *just* picked up the Death Force, so it has seen no use to this point.

For The Vault, there is absolutely no reward for this class (Sting??!) so the risk/reward ratio was ill defined. I simply skipped the quest for The Barrow Downs.
For aggravation, I only consider that late game, and even then it makes the game much harder. Your first trip down to the 70-80s can spawn 30+ uniques on a single level, and they all want to play! I don't think aggravation would hurt in the M$ quest, nor probably in DQI. But for The Cloning Pits or The Old Castle it is probably better to go in with Very Bad stealth than it is to aggravate.

I switched to stealth mode and I would be Legendary[5] were it not for the Iron Ball. But Superb is awesome, relatively speaking. And stealth allows me to fight uniques 1 on 1, which is crucial.
Things were going well. I ran into Azathoth and set up with Slay Sentient and Death Force but an Ultra Elite woke him up and, as usual, he got me before I could close in for melee. Only a Mana breath, but starting the battle 2 squares distant with 700+hp is still risky. Nonetheless, I closed and killed, requiring a mere 3 rounds of melee (and I missed my first 2 blows!). I'm about 5k a round unless I get unlucky with misses.
But that was a good battle, relatively speaking. When Nyarlathotep caught me unprepared, I teleported to setup. I was at 900hp but cast Slay Sentient anyway bringing me to 800hp. He casts Mana Storm (and he's still 3 squares away!) bringing me to 200hp. Quaff *Healing* (my first one used, but worth it when angered) and close in. He summons 3 cyberdemons, and there are no ASC when you are quaking with the Death Force! I killed them all in rage, but this was a big waste of counters, so now I'm scrambling to get more.

I don't think I can offer a representative opinion on this class, having lucked into the Iron Ball. With this weapon I was grossly overpowered, but still at risk of dying which would have embarrassed me greatly!
For the Serpent, figure on 850hp per strike for 2550 damage.
With my Heavy Lance Grond, figure on 400hp per strike for 1200 damage. That would have been a closer battle, but 1200 damage per round is still very high. So I think the balance might be just fine and I like characters that have a (slim) chance of achieving overwhelming power.
If you are playing a Demigod, I recommend Fleet of Foot. Stealth would also help, but if you don't find the -6 stealth Iron Ball then this shouldn't be too much of a problem. It might also be interesting to choose Fantastic Frenzy for the Massacre talent.

To this end, I'm going to try tweaking ego item generation in the next release. Currently, egos of a similar kind (e.g. boots) have relative distributions that are fixed throughout the game. For (good) boots, these are:
Levitation: 33.6%
Stealth: 14.0%
Free Action: 15.9%
Speed: 9.3%
Jumping: 15.9%
Thievery: 11.2%
I'd rather boots become an important source of speed in the game. Logically, your feet determine your speed, no? And while most characters can find dozens of rings of speed, few ever see a single pair of boots (This guy found 2, but was lucky).
So, step one to this aim will be to alter the relative frequencies of egos based on the current depth. The distribution above is valid at early depths, but as you go deeper, boots of speed will become more common.
Step two of this evil plan will probably be to biff the speed bonuses on both Brand and ... *gasp* ... Ringil. Blasphemy, I know ...
Any thoughts on this?

Usually people more often have an empty shooter slot they use for support than an empty weapon slot, and Ringil is much rarer (I get Brand in 90+% of my winners, Ringil in maybe 20-30%?)

You are not the first to complain. Previously, rand-arts were over powered so I nerfed them. This guy definitely did not collect/*id* most of what spawned, so what made it back home was generated somewhat earlier on, I think. I definitely saw some good stuff, but nothing will match Iron Ball, of course!
I'm willing to power rand-arts back up again. I've also added a wizard command for generating large numbers of arts at your current depth, either replacements or simply random (which will be weaker in general). Honestly, I simply can't tell if the power is right or not ... Instructions are on the Release Notes page and I'd appreciate feedback/help. Thanks!

I think it is OK. You generally won't find what I found, after all :) Also, it invites Dispel Magic so you really need to think twice about using it against certain foes.
> Is the Death Force charge appropriate?
I had no problems. I couldn't use Death Force all the time, and needed to look for foes. I had an evil plan to capture/charm a Software Bug but never needed to. For big guys, just look around the level for packs to feed on first. For the Serpent, spend 5 minutes super charging on L99 before making the dive. Monster nests are good sources of prey, as are hounds and especially packs of Warriors of the Dawn. You can also chug !Speed, but I never needed to do that.
>Regarding changes to Brand and Ringil ...
Ringil has always been a bit weak melee wise for the end game, escpecially for 5 attack classes. I'd rather give it one extra die for damage than more speed. The problem with kill evil is that it makes two of the other slays (undead and demons) meaningless.
The reason for the biff is that boots of speed will now be much more common, and everyone will probably find a decent pair. I want to guard against players wearing 2 extra attack rings! But that would probably be due to Brand rather than Ringil ...

For the latest release (97) I re-instituted the random doubling of the number of powers (1 in 12) and also brought back the weird code for adding more powers. Most arts should generate just like before, but occasionally you should be able to find some truly awesome stuff. At least that is my intention.
Also, a couple releases back I made immunities easier to come by, but they are still unusual and you shouldn't find them before L60.
Good Luck!
