Vanilla Town. No Selling.

I'm on a crazy early level with a nest of Mindcrafters (95x 50xp, so I'm interested in killing them all). However, the nest is completely surrounded by Undead Masses (over 300 slain so far and MAX_REPRO remain). Maybe 500+ kills on the level and probably 500 or so living monsters to go, as nasties spawn waaaay faster than I can kill them. So, I will either die in this feeble effort, or I will come out near L25 I think. I'm shooting for at least L23 and the beloved Adrenaline Channeling. In the mean time, I think L21 will turn the tide as that is when my Pulverise acquires radius 2.

After 1200 kills on this level, I'm calling it quits. The Mindcrafters are all dead, and this was helped considerably by Adrenaline Channeling. But those stupid Undead Masses are insatiable breeders, and I just simply cannot make a dent in their numbers, so I'm quitting after killing 800 or so.

CL25 and Identify is just around the corner. That and temp ESP should really help!

I've powered down to stat potion depth which has typically been when my luck runs out.

Self Knowledge reveals an 18/70 intrinsic dex. Combined with my race (-6 eventually), class (-1) and personality (-2) that yields a base Dex of a mere 16! So, I probably need to find +20 or so from gear if I hope to give melee a go. But if that were my plan, I'd hardly have gone with a patient Ent, now would I?

Counterbalancing this monstrosity is a 112% life rating (which is just insanely good), 18/110 Str, 18/110 Wis (nice) and even 18/120 Con. Together with my race (+5 eventually), class (-1) and personality (+2), that yields a staggering 18/180 base Con.

So, I'm thinking high HP and Psycho-spears are the way to go ;)

This is proving to be one of my faster Vanilla Town attempts, reaching L30 in just over 4 hours. Not many stat potions so far ... just 3 !Chr I think, but I'll keep looking. Now that I have Detect Objects, I should stand a chance of finding them quicker. Indeed, one approach is to simply teleport around the level casting Precognition, ignoring as much as possible. One can explore 90% of the level in about 20 or 30s this way, and we all know that 1 level in 100 or so has a stat potion, so this should be quite a speed up!

Psycho Spear is a long way off unfortunately. Actually, I think it comes at L32, but won't be remotely castable until at least L40. And with melee completely out of the question, that leaves a long interim of pulverising orcs and trolls ... 5224 kills so far, and expect at least 10k before I can get this guy moving again. By that time, my HP which are already substantial, should prove up to the challenge of facing down the dreaded double breath!

Also, I can finally light rooms up! You can't imagine my delight when I finally found a -Illumination. Indeed, I employed less than honorable tactics to get one, but I was desperate (This is also where I got my potions of charisma, but the exploit is only available for a very limited time ...)

You said you disagreed with the short bow and light crossbow changes? Did you reverse them in

the latest version or am I missing something? I haven't picked up the latest version because I apply so many edit file

customizations that upgrading is a bit of a chore =)

Shopkeepers not stocking the essentials is a big hassle. Sometimes I feel that from a game design standpoint, they

should just stock unlimited quantities of the same items each time. (The Black Market would be an exception.) Of course,

the current system is a relic of Moria and as such has a certain charm, but... that all goes out the window when you're

incapacitated by stat drain and the Alchemist just refuses to carry the right potions. R9999 here I come. (Before level 30

though, stat drain doesn't bother me: first, because I avoid stat drainers like the plague, and second, because of the

level-up boosts.)

On 31.3.2012 17:40 chris wrote:
No, short bow/light crossbow are still biffed range weapons. I'd like feedback from Dave before reverting that change since it was his idea. I just avoid using them :)

Wrt stat drain, the key is to buy restore potions as you see them, and to accumulate those found in the dungeon. Normally, you can just auto destroy these since the town has restoration services. Aside from an early drain from a trap or a jelly, I haven't had any troubles with stat drain. (And if the Alchemist doesn't have what you need, R9999 will *not* help, at least not in any newer version!)

Currently, I am wading thru a vault on a special level. I know, this is how I usually die but this guy is having no problems with Ancient dragons (blue and black). The only toughies are GHMMWQ who, with its healing spell and my 70 damage max per round is completely, totally, utterly impossible to kill. I've dished out 20k damage at least and the guy only has 1800hp or so. Must be nice to never run out of mana ... Plus, its detection range is soooo big that I'm having trouble luring it away from the vault so I can find the artifact. Its a slow process.

The other danger is a lesser balrog since I lack nether resist. But I do now have a rod of teleport other, so I'm using that.

Ooops ... Psychospear is not until L35. Damn, I could really use something more powerful at this point.

Actually, Mind Wave is really nice for clearing orc pits and even some troll pits. Hordes of monsters are also quickly dispatched, and this is helping with the object generation. In fact, stat potions are coming much more quickly than I ever dreamed!

Current level is special with a vault. Inside are an Ethereal Dragon and a Cthonian that have me worried. Also, a Demonologist and a Color Out of Space. The prudent thing to do would be to bail, but I spy a couple pairs of boots, including some hard leather boots. I guess I'll risk it ...

(Not that the game is over when you get through, but it starts feeling more fair...)

Agreed. Its not so much CL that allows you to break out, but speed, hp and requisite resistance (e.g. Poison). Of course, this character is just nuts wrt hp. One of those boots was Thror (I was hoping for Feanor but am quite willing to settle!) and that helps out in all three areas since the random resist was a quite important Nether resist. Around L45 one runs into fast nether breathers, so its a good idea to cover up. Its funny, but I'll still wear my ring of nether resistance since hold life is so hard to come by, and it even is an ego ring with the rare regeneration ability.

So, 600+ hp at L32? I'd say that is quite a good start :D

Now, let's consider Mr. Yamata. Hmmm ... I can pulverise for 15d8 and it can breath for 550 (or up to 1600 if you account for triple moves). I only need to land 100 or so Pulverisations to kill it. Well, maybe 150 when you account for monster regeneration. How long do you think I could last, especially if it gets ticked off? Seriously, think baby Tarrasque here and I .. am .. on .. freakin' .. Wizardstaves give DEC_MANA, but what I really want is a Wizard Cloak since that has both flags. Unfortunately, it is very rare ...

Sorry, I've been pretty busy for quite a while. Why do you not like the short bow / light xbow changes? Well, I did notice a bug... Short Bows fire at rate 1.00, whereas it should be 1.1, to make up for its shorter range. It looks correct for Light Xbow vs Heavy Xbow though.

IMO the change is good because it makes all ranged weapons have their niche instead of two of the five being clearly inferior. If you don't like the short range limitations, you can always just use Long Bows and Heavy Xbows.

I've been having fun with an Artemis shooter Psion...

On 1.4.2012 15:56 chris wrote:
Personally, I always seem to find myself in asymmetric situations where monsters can affect me with spells but I still can't shoot them. In fact, monsters have 10 out of 18 squares of advantage. Gnome Mages and Crypt Creeps are examples of monsters you *need* to be able to shoot from a maximal distance, especially when they refuse to come close to you or chase you.

The other annoyance is trying to take down something fast and sleeping, but the range of 8 only permits a couple of shots. Shoot and scoot is no longer a viable game strategy.

The extra damage does not make up for the over 50% reduction in range, IMO. But, like you said, one can use Long Bows and Heavy XBows instead, which I do.

Djabanete, what was your take?

On 1.4.2012 16:05 Djabanete wrote:
>>> IMO the change is good because it makes all ranged weapons have their niche instead of two of the five being clearly inferior.

I don't get it... aren't the two still clearly inferior, just in another aspect? Long Bows are still strictly better than Short Bows. I just prefer the damage handicap over the range handicap because there's less counting involved that way.

On 1.4.2012 16:37 dzhang wrote:
No, Short Bows and Light Xbows (are supposed to) fire faster. So you actually have more damage output with Shortbows and Light Xbows if the target is in range.

Right now it's 1.00 => 1.10 and 0.75 => 0.83, but if that's not enough, we can bump it up to 1.2 and 0.9

On 1.4.2012 16:43 dzhang wrote:
Chris, I'm open to fine tuning the range on shortbows and light xbows. Would 10 be better? As for Gnome Mages and Crypt Creeps, I guess it's a design feature that Longbows are preferable against these guys.

Also, I was thinking that another way to resolve the longbow vs shortbow issue is to say that the max range is the same for both (18), but once you go past the favored range of shortbows (8), then you take a -5 tohit for each square farther for shortbows. Naturally, this doesn't apply for longbows. Both the favored range and the penalty per square could be fine tuned.

On 2.4.2012 17:54 Djabanete wrote:
I still prefer shooters the old way --- I see what you're saying now about specializing their roles, but both the range penalty and accuracy penalty strike me as being too clunky to be worthwhile. (For what it's worth, I prefer the range penalty over the incremental accuracy penalty.)

Also, on occasion I've opted for a light crossbow over a heavy one simply on account of the weight... but the same balance mechanism doesn't really apply to regular bows :(

Well, its hard to resist Slayer even if it is causing all these sorts of anomalies, including a -6 penalty to speed since I need to use a ring for Chaos resistance. Hallucination is quite common at this point, almost perpetual in fact.

After a looong time running from all significant uniques, I decided to take a stand. The level looked dangerous, but not particularly special and the vault was midling. But the guardians were fierce, including Ancalagon, Hastur, Glaurung, Quachil Uttaus and even little Rinaldo.

Why would I be so bold? Well, a Great Wyrm of Law was kicking the bejeezus of both Rinaldo and Glaurung. But first, I had to kill Ancalagon which was not too bad. My strategy was to fight until out of hp and sp and then teleport, which is quite risky but necessary when playing without rechargeable staves of healing. This only took two such escapes.

Far worse was Hastur, who not only has access to a big 'ol nether breath (tm), but also spams one of my many resistance holes: darkness. This battle was something like spear, spear, flee. Spear, spear, flee. Spear, spear, heal, spear, flee. After 10 or so repetitions I prevailed.

Quachil cost 1 !Healing as the GWoL separated from Rinaldo and Glaurung and I did not want to allow time for regeneration. That guy's time breaths are super duper annoying, but I fortunately had my rod of restoration ready and waiting.

Of course, Rinaldo cursed, but nothing spectacular and I even polished off the GWoL (still at 4 stars) despite lacking both Sound or Shards resist. This cost another !Healing :(

But I got the amulet I wanted!

Suddenly, my kit came together.

First, Brand dropped his crossbow with sound resistance. Now, that guy was tough as he has a ~350hp darkness storm. Man, I sucked up about 6 of those! Fortunately, he doesn't have many hp. And while he will start spamming healing when wounded, I was able to polish him off. I also got curse #2 from Amberite #2.

Next, I picked up Thranduil while cleaning up back to back blue dragon nests. I must say that Mind Wave and double resist make for great fun in these sorts of situations. There is nothing quite like getting 300 to 400 objects for about 5s of effort! Thranduil came with Nexus.

So, investigation of my home revealed Hithlomir with light resistance. Jack is still alive and if I thought Brand was bad, watch out! Jack is an abomination!! Also, a dragon shield with Shards.

Now, for the first time in history, I am eager to find Frakir. It will grant me that last point of Wisdom as well as poison resist and (new to Chengband) levitation. Where could it be hiding?

Oh, boy! I powered down to L80 hoping for some lucky rods of healing. With my wizard light detection, they should be easy to spot, provided I can get them to generate at all! But, there is a slight problem: Every level is infested with super powerful uniques. The Norsa, Godzilla, The Witch-King, and even Gothmog. Amberites over here. Amberites over there. Big buff Kenshirou and Raou.

I'm killing what I can, which isn't much, and is made more difficult by the sheer density of big baddies. Heck, even Pinky has proven beyond my powers of destruction.

What I need is a good ring of spell power (at least +3) and some alternate source of poison resistance! Maybe a good pair of dragon wings and Julian's armor or something like that.

OK, I just killed Godzilla and it only took 1 -Healing, 2 !Healing and 3 desperation teleports. I also took one extremely close call with a double breath that I barely survived.

Word of advice: Don't get cute with Dimension Door as it costs extra energy. It's a fine escape, but don't use it to blink next to a foe since you will generally receive a double move nasty surprise!

One of the major problems with Vanilla town is that it forces spellcasters to play with -4 to their key stat. I don't dare use !NewLife or even risk !Polymorph, so I'll just have to garner enough Wisdom to overcome the biff ... And thanks to the reflection mirror and the jewel, I'm now good to go! Reflection is huge for my playstyle (ticking things off with psychospears) so that mirror is a godsend.

Now, the necessity of my ring of poison resistance is really starting to tick me off!
