As usual, I am about 1/3 as fast as Victor, and am just now getting up the courage to burgle the dragon's lair. I was disappointed when The Barrow Downs failed to raise me to CL30 for object detection, so I needed to top off my experience in the Anti-melee caves, where I quickly learned that those are not the caves for me (Pulverise keeps blinking my opponents, so they wouldn't melee me anyway!)

Bad news so far: Hagen stiffed on his spear. Also, no phial yet.
Good news so far: Thror was dropped in the Barrow Downs.

About 25 minutes in, and I've scored 4 stat potions and 5 _*Destruction*. Also 3 sets of dragon gear, one of which is pretty darn good.

This is really addictive! I tried to take on both Scatha and Smaug, but am not there yet. I'm looking for a _Healing first, I guess. Oh, and some PDSM :D

The Phial of Mordenkainen (+3) {Ch;Fe}

Ugggh. You have no idea what I went thru to get the Phial of Galadriel, as it finally showed up in an uber crazy vault. Well, at least I picked up Grayswandir for all my troubles ...

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........

Another bone crushing killer vault! This is freakin' insane! We're talking Godzilla for crying out loud :D

Plus, a Warp Demon got the jump on me and drained all my charges of teleport other. And you thought I was paranoid with the backup rod? Well, perhaps. As I was clearing the final corner, with amazing +18 speed, I had to face down a Lord of Change. I waited til he shifted to spend energy, zapped for stone to mud, and yup, I failed to zap my rod of teleport other! Another round and I'm blinded and down to 200hp. Try again? Sure, why not! And it worked, allowing me to score some niceness. Crimson was the big take this time ...

Isn't Mordenkainen supposed to be some sort of badass in Norse mythology? Guess this was one of his projects he wasn't too proud of ^_^

Anyhow, I usually am not nearly as lucky as I was for the warrior. Now if only that +5 was Con...but I'm not complaining :D

I'd have to say, that's quite a fine long bow you scored there though.

Yeah, I'm not even using Crimson!

I have to agree that Precognition costs are too high at the moment. While the cost shouldn't be 1sp, I think 20sp (and eventually 40sp) is too much. At the risk of being a munchkin, I think I will cut the costs in half (Hey, I'm playtesting too :)

Well, the game finally settled down to normal, and stopped trying to kill me with ridiculously hard out of depth monsters. This allowed me to kill a few greater dragons with my spell power, and level up to CL35. Now, I have the psycho spear, though it fails at 19% ...

What i'm always wondering about when i read your posts is how you kill Wyrms at your level. You just use a lot of resistance potions and poison needleing everything? Or do you do enough damage to actually kill them?

Because when i try, i just die by their breathes.

On 3.7.2011 23:25 chris wrote:
This guy is killing wyrms with Pulverise and Psychic Drain. The damage output is pathetic, about 90hp a pop, and that is with +30% spell power, but the effects of pulverise include slowing, stunning, short range teleport. So while dragons get ticked off, they don't respond so quickly (Also, you might consider upgrading to 0.0.38 as revenge got dialed back a bit). Mindcrafters also have Adrenaline Channeling (+10 speed and heroism) as well as Character Armor (+50 AC, double resistance). Finally, when mana runs low, there is Psychic Drain, which steals hitpoints from a foe and replenishes mana (Monsters can resist, though). So yeah, it takes 100 turns or so to kill a dragon, but its not too hard. Of course, I'm only doing Storm Wyrms and Ice Wyrms at the moment ...

Other characters can try the needle, but its not that easy to do. If your AC is low you will take substantial damage, and the breaths remain full force. I generally can only manage with Craft, since that has passwall which allows resting. Maybe Victor can share some secrets? :D

Yeah, another uber crazy mega death vault, this time with Sauron the Sorcerer inside. The big take was Balance DSM and I walked the pattern for a few more niceties like Hammerhand and Great Winter (*Co??? Please??? :) Also, I can't remember the last time I found a +3 attacks weapon, but I'm not meleeing for the foreseeable future.

Omg... Updates, i missed that... My 2nd weapon gives me +30% mana now... 100 more mana for me. Thx for the tip of updating!

Ahhh the art of great wyrm killing :D

For early-level (~30) wyrm killing, you absolutely need double resistance, and a source of speed. Poison needle is also necessary unless you have tremendous damage for your level, at least 250 dmg/round. As that usually isn't achieved around level 30, poison needle is your best bet. You can get a poison needle from Shelob at the bottom of the Forest. Shelob is not exactly a pushover for an early level character, but it should be manageable. If in doubt of any monster's stats, don't forget the very handy bestiary service.

Here's a generic inventory for a first-time early wyrm killer:

a) 15 or more potions of CCW
b) 2 or more potions of heroism
c) 1 or more potions of speed, or a staff of speed
d) 10 scrolls of phase door
e) 10 scrolls of teleportation
f) potions of resist cold/fire (purchasable in Cheng) or pots of resistance
g) poison needle

Get close to the wyrm (1 space away or adjacent depending on stealth), resist up, and start poking away. You should have close to 300 HP, and usually you can get in around 4-5 pokes before you have to phase away and heal up with potions. For Great Storm and Ice Wyrms, the weakest of the bunch, they do something on the order of 110 HP per double-resisted breath. So if you fall to around 150 HP, scram and heal up.

Rinse and repeat as much as you dare, or get out if your resources are running low. Once you get a reliable damage source of around 250/round, then you can leave the poison needle aside.

Order for elemental wyrms for toughness are as follows:

Great Storm Wyrm (3000 HP) = Great Ice Wyrm (3000 HP) < Great Bile Wyrm (4000 HP) < Great Hell Wyrm (5400 HP) = Great Venom Wyrm (5400 HP)

Stick with Great Storm and Ice Wyrms, and the occasional Great Bile Wyrm. I generally avoid Great Hell Wyrms period, as they also destroy lots of your inventory, and only hit Great Venom Wyrms at later levels. Storm, Ice and Bile Wyrms should cough up plenty of good loot so that you can progress beyond the poison needle without having to kill gigantic hordes of trolls and such.

Good wyrm hunting!

Awesome! I'd add one thing:
Wand of Teleport Other. Its pretty hard to get the right monster all alone otherwise. Sometimes you can just go nuts teleporting things away for better isolation.

For my early needlers, it is not the breaths that are so bad, but the melee damage. Early AC seems to be so poor ...

On 4.7.2011 08:07 Arjen wrote:
So double res and Shelob it is. I do have a wand of rockets and disintegration. So i can dish out some damage, but after those 8 charges my damage is reduced to 90 from my bazooka. Ill buy some blessing scrolls too for a little bit more AC.

I was already diving in the Forest to find Shelob. I hope i can kill her. :)

Both thanks for the walkthrough on Wyrms. :)

-Rockets and -Disintegrate might be enough for a Storm Wyrm, provided you finish off the last 1k hp with your powers. Start with the rockets to get hp off the critter as quick as possible ... Anyway, its a risky endeavor, so good luck :)

[CL40: The Cloning Pits] 07:05
I tried to complete this quest before CL40 so I wouldn't look like such a slacker, but alas, the second to last Fasolt (also the second to last monster in the quest) leveled me up. As a pure caster, I was hesitant to do the quest earlier in case things got out of hand, but check out my freakin' Legendary[20] stealth! Nothing woke up, and I could rest 3 squares away from Dagons to regain mana with hardly a risk.

And I got the true boots, but I think I like Thror better! Now, for The Old Castle. I'll try that stealth trick again :D

On 4.7.2011 17:07 chris wrote:
[CL40:The Old Castle] 07:23
Back to back top tier rewards, OMG! And with Eternity, I *must* find a way to use it! So, I renounce my Legendary[20] stealth to rejoin the realm of mortal fairies, and suffer to move with an aggravating Heroic skill. But ... all resists and maxed out Wis and Con. Plus Time resistance! Sweet ...

Old Castle was easy too, though 2 Vampire Lords managed to wake up. I was concerned with the Greater Titans, but I pulverised them and that was that. Spears for the finish!

Now, to rid myself of this nasty +6 con ring ...

On 4.7.2011 19:05 chris wrote:
[CL42:DL70] 08:43
The quests are getting extremely difficult, so I better hold off and power up some more. In particular, I need *alot* more healing. Perhaps 3 or 4 _Healing instead of 1.

The tough quests were Daoloth, who is absurd for DL54. With revenge, he breathes for 300hp 75% of the time, and I just couldn't get next to the guy.

Then, Tselakus, but the way to handle him is too get next to him, which is easy. But I played it from a distance and got 5 Amberite summons and 4 greater undead summons. It took 14 charges of *destruction* to handle all the summons. Plus, when he wasn't summoning amberites for revenge, he was invoking darkness storms which hardly tickle.

Finally, was Ungoliant just completed. Now I know better than to fight from a distance as the big spiders just suck in melee. But, for some reason, I got darkness storm after darkness storm. Maybe 25 over all! So, I ran out of healing quickly and had to teleport away and rest up, but without regeneration that hardly works. In the end, it probably took 150 psycho-spears to kill the gigantic bloated spider of the underworld. I really could have used 20 or so healing for that battle, which was totally horrible.

So, I think now I'll level up to CL45 and then exploit Enlightenment to scum resources. Once I have the healing, it won't be so bad ...

On 4.7.2011 20:57 chris wrote:
[CL45:DL72] 09:48
Oh, that's annoying. I leveled up to CL45 on a GWoB, but on its way out, it breathed chaos and destroyed my _Healing. I was even using Azhagal so I could *FiAc and protect the staff (when my Character Armor runs out).

Well, I now have enlightenment, so I should be able to find more. I think I will bring my hoard of *destruction* to the bottom of R'lyeh to look.
