Gachapin at DL26? Blasphemy! He clearly belongs at CL24, and when he failed to show up, I figured I was in the clear. Oh well, I killed him anyway, since I resist both Poison and Chaos.

I'm guessing melee is never going to be an option. Born with an 18/70 base, and having -9 to dex from race/class/personality, that puts me at 16 dex, assuming I max out the stat! When is psycho spear again?

Level 35

Not terribly mana efficient but it works. Also gotta love the invuln piercing effect -- the ideal Caaws killer. Any plans to make spellpower or decrease mana cost apply to mindcrafters? I seem to remember that they can get quite skilled with wizardstaves but never benefitted.

Oh and before I forget, even though you get psycho spear at Lev 35 it won't be 0% fail until something like Lev 41.

On 25.12.2010 21:27 chris wrote:
I did make some Mindcrafter changes a while back, and am currently testing them out:

[1] Spellpower works for psycho-spear.

[2] Psycho-spear damage now caps at 200 + d200 (was 150 + d150)

[3] Precognition has variable casting costs. Currently, it costs 30sp rather than 1sp, which is fair for a spell that combines Nature Awareness, Detect Objects and Telepathy, I think. Still, the extra cost is very noticeable. By the time it grants Wizard Light, it will cost 50sp.

[4] Minor Displacement becomes Dimension Door at CL45 (at which point the casting cost goes from 2sp to 42sp).

Still, leaning on pulverise, while effective, is *extremely* keyboard intensive. I wouldn't mind a smidgen of melee to cut my keystrokes way down ...

A short while ago, the game taunted me with total awesomeness, completely unaffordable, in the black market. Well, after a few trips to the top of the Anti-Magic cave, and after scoring a Wrath of God and Spell Power +4, it turns out I had 300k gold after all, and am now the proud owner of:
The Heavy Crossbow of Rage (x4) (+20,+9) (+4 to speed) {SpCnSl;Nt(Cn, 293k BM}

It puts Crimson to complete and utter shame :)

Still no benefit from the wizardstaff? :( The Hengband spoilers show that wizardstaff skill for the mindcrafter starts at 4000 and goes all the way to mastery. I think it would be nice for them to benefit from decreased mana cost, unless you think that is too powerful. I don't necessarily think so, as using a wizardstaff obviates powerful melee, and their top-end damage is not on par with mages/blue mages/high mages etc.

OK, Wizardstaff support for the Mindcrafter has been added. Now, I just need to find one ;-P

Psychospear currently fails at 25%, but I can cut that down another 6% with Thengel, and another 3% with a wizardstaff. 16% is very workable. Also, I really regret selling my -4 Spell Power earlier on. -2 is a bit on the weak side, and I can suck up a bigger con biff, too!

After a very brief stint of melee, I finally scored a wizardstaff, so it is back to the Anti-Melee cave for me. I also picked up a cloak of the bat, but I'm really paranoid about disenchantment, so I won't bother.

I'm waiting on Hammerhand, much higher stats and probably CL40 before making a go at the Cloning Pits. I really want 5 melee attacks, and currently, I have between 2 and 3 given my equipment. Going with pure psycho-spears might be doable, but I'm still failing like crazy, and my stealth is rather poor.

And, of course, I'm waiting on the Palantir before attempting the Old Castle!

On 26.12.2010 21:11 chris wrote:

A tough level, but so far, well worth the effort. See, there is a !Con sitting in the back corner of a big vault, and I am determined to get it! Thus far, I've gained about 400,000xp, and more ... plenty more ... is on the way. Maybe I can reach CL40 before snagging the potion?

Resistances are good, except for Shards, and I stupidly killed Rinaldo. Normally, you would not expect a Cyberdemon on DL41, but it has been known to happen. He didn't curse, though.

AC is simply atrocious. I'm AC77 which might as well be AC0. So, I'm stuck in Anti-melee until I score another 80 or so AC. Decent dragon scale mail, balance perhaps?, would do the trick nicely, but I'm not holding my breath.

Melee still is not an option. Only 3 attacks ... Fortunately, psycho-spear is finally a worthy spell. Geez, it only took a 33% damage boost, a +23% ring of spell power, and the addition of economical mana support to give this class passable spell offense. I'm not sure what I would be doing in Hengband right now ... Oh, I know. The Poison Needle :D

Well, I had to kill Narse, Nappa, Garm, Yibb-Tstll, and Utgard Loke on that level ... all for a !Con. Would I do it again? You betcha!

So, I easily hit CL40 in the process, and decided it was time for the Cloning Pits, despite a lack of levitation. I carried 4 rings of levitation to swap with spell power, and that was just fine. Though, it was quite embarrassing, but I had a hard time getting started. It was a good thing I had a smidgen of melee, cause when the Bokrugs were down, I was surrounded by giant army ants that can't be drained, and the Its and Dungeon Cleaners were closing in fast. Still no place to teleport to, and everybody starting to wake up, me with no spellpoints, so this was risky. But I managed to melee for a bit, and then I raided one of the Rogrogs (after briefly Clearing my Mind) to recover all my spell points, and it was smooth sailing from that point on. Giant Fire Ants are best charmed with Domination, but I still had to kill 40 or so. Nothing of real note ... Thranduil, but I'm intrinsically telepathic these days. I really want Hammerhand! Oh well, Sam will do for the time being.

If I had levitation, I'd gladly head over to the Dragon's Lair. But, as it is, I think I'll head back over to the Anti-Melee caves to slaughter more uniques.

Moving on to the Dragon's Lair, where I am surprisingly effective. Perhaps psycho-spear is a bit too powerful at this point in the game, or perhaps it is just the spell power making a big difference? In Hengband, it would only be doing 129 + d129 for 194 average damage, which is pretty good, but certainly not endgame worthy. For Chengband, it does 173 + d173 for 260 average damage, which is powerful, but again, I don't think that is endgame worthy. Then there is spell power, adding 23% to that, and the wizardstaff cutting the costs? Well, I'm strong enough to play pure spell caster, which is something a Mindcrafter normally just can't even consider. We'll see how the end game feels ... If I make it that long :)

At first, I used Aranruth for levitation, but then quickly scored a bunch of dragon's wings, and finally one with disenchantment resistance. And now I was able to burgle the outer layer of a nice vault for BDSM (and a couple !Experience :), but I'm not sure I can give up the Wisdom boost from my Robe of the Gods. Oh well, I'll shut up about poor AC now, as there is no excuse. I guess the Palantir would help nicely, but I'm determined to find it first in the lair before heading off to the Old Castle.

On 27.12.2010 02:14 chris wrote:
[CL43:DL60] 09:43
Playing without Shards resistance is risky, so I better put my newly acquire BDSM to use. I'm encumbered this way, lose my maximal wisdom, but suddenly cover up all resistances with a respectable 229 AC. Its time for me to move my complaints elsewhere ... Like, where is *my* +13 Ring of Speed ;D I'd even swap out spell power for one!

On 27.12.2010 16:36 chris wrote:

I'm killing Great Wyrms of Law and Chaos nicely, thanks to 3 staves of healing. A Great Wyrm of Spacetime was quite the ordeal, though. I had to fight in the open to avoid the time melee attacks, but that just brought about the time breath and high dragon summoning, so I'm not convinced it was very prudent on my part. The Invisible Pink Unicorn was exceptionally difficult, only because she spams healing and took 100 or so psycho-spears to bring down. And Caine, I had to abort, so I'm not convinced I am so powerful after all. Maybe if I had a touch more speed?

I tried melee for a bit, and 7 attacks with Tailbiter (I'm still 4 base) was good for dragon slaughter, but I'm still more effective with psycho-spears, despite the retaliation code. So, I quickly reverted back to my pure spellcaster posture, and took down the likes of Mycen and Bramd. Brand too, but all he had for me was a nasty curse. Bastard!

I'll need to shuffle my life for an 18/130 intrinsic con, too, I fear. And I'll probably need Thorin and Cambeleg. At any rate, perhaps it can happen, just not now.

In the mean time, here is a more manageable dose of spell power. -5 Str/Dex/Con for +38% spell power is a trade I am perfectly willing to make. Of course, my low speed is starting to cause some major problems ...

On 27.12.2010 18:31 chris wrote:
[CL47:DL72] 12:15
There is Thorin, and one way to use it :) I'm really missing the economical mana, though. Very noticeable!

Now, I just need the Palantir and a good ring of speed. That should allow me to keep my +38% spell power with maximal wisdom and con, I think. And I just know one of the umpty gadzillion greater wyrms I am killing has what I am looking for, they are just being stubborn. So, to pass the time, I'm switching in the cloak of the bat. Its not like I was planning on using melee any time soon, so the (-10, -10) fighting penalty doesn't bother me ...

Hah! The jokes on me. I waited a long time for the Palantir to show up, but the Old Castle reward was Eternity instead. I'm not complaining, since this solves my encumbrance issues, grants time resistance, allows me to dual wield rings of spell power, allows me to regain economical mana, and just plain looks cool :)

I'm still awaiting a ring of speed ... I found a -3 ring about 10 hours ago, but that hardly counts.

On 27.12.2010 21:24 chris wrote:

OK, I stand corrected. Beruthiel, thanks to a +5 con ring, a +5 ring of reinforce muscle, a +4 con rand-art weapon, Thorin, a +4 con rand-art shooter, Thror and Eternity. And still, I lack another +5 con ... but I could conceivably get those from a !NewLife. The only thing holding me back is that I am not convinced I can use Spell Power long term and I don't want to trash my 111% life rating. I still need at least another +20 to speed, and the only way to get that is thru a pair of rings. But, for the time being, its time to show those Great Wyrms of Space Time who the true master of time actually is!

Psycho-Spear is 572 + d572 if you are curious ...

OK, this is way fun. I just busted up a mob of Ancient D's including 3 Spectral, 3 Balance, 6 Chaos, and assorted elemental. Upon finishing, there is Tiamat with her own mob of big D's. Mop up. Still no ring of speed, but I did get the Jewel.

So, before I could think better of it, I played the New Life game. I lost 12% life rating (down to 99%) and 4 strength, 2 int and 5 chr. Gained 4 con, 5 dex, 2 wis. All in all, a good trade. But now I'm left wanting some potions of con to top off my hp. And losing that much strength is bad news ... I can barely carry my equipment and am forced to play without ?Teleport!

Well, I killed the Norsa and got my first 3 rings of speed (+6, +7 and +9). I guess Beruthiel needs to go :(

Oh ... My ... God! Loki was a total bitch! Lets see, he began by summoning every remaining Amberite, Atlas, The Tarrasque and a half dozen cyberdemons. And all this before I managed to hit him with 3 psycho-spears! I was running out of *destruction* when he finally settled down his summoning (after spamming a couple dozen ancient dragons), and simply decided to retaliate with mana storms and psycho-spears of his own! Holy Cow! He's one tough giant ... but I got him from a distance with psycho-spears!

Boy, ever since Loki, its been smooth sailing. Monsters like Raphael, Kronos, Ymir, Combat Echizen, and even Oremorj can't even hold a candle to the awesome destructiveness of the Trickster. Or maybe its just me coming off my adrenaline high ...

The smooth sailing ended abruptly with The Destroyer! But, I was ready for him. I set up camp next to a pack of Ogres. Since I needed about 4000sp to kill the guy, some ready means of replenishment was necessary, and the ogres served nicely until they were all gone. Then, I had to teleport around the level looking for thoughtful creatures to drain, and I forgot that I had swapped out Thorin for the Reflecting Mirror. And the Lernean Hydra was about, but I wisely kept away from it. In the end, I was out of my paltry 16 charges of _Healing and my meager 4 charges of -Healing, and beginning to quaff !Healing far more quickly then I would like, when I remembered my !Invulnerability! Ah! That was good for those last 2 stars, and probably saved a half dozen precious potions.

The reward was completely worthy of the task ... Excalipur! Sweet, now, The Serpent is *mine*!!

I still have hopes of Beruthiel! With Tulkas, I have +21 Con from my equipment. Of course, I still need a bunch of potions to max out con, and they are very slow to come. So that would put me at 18/140 con. With a +4 con weapon, that is 18/180, which is probably playable. Of course, some nice con boosting gloves or a cloak would be nice. Oh wait, I will lose Hammerhand so that is only 18/150 and I guess I will need more con than that. Still, I am optimistic ...

In the mean time, I'm hunting stat potions (still!) and resources for The Serpent. And killing uniques as I spot them. Sauron ranks up there with Loki, but I had less trouble versus him. Perhaps I am faster these days or have more healing? Anyway, he summoned 5 Ring Wraiths for his first move, but those are easily handled 1 at a time thanks to forest creation and psychic drain. His undead and dragon summons were more concerning, but I was able to blink about, luring him away, and the summons also gave a ready supply of spell points. I really did not want to drain Sauron for spell points, as psychic drain takes 1.5 turns and could easily kill me to a double mana storm. But the ticked off Sauron only mana stormed once, so I'm thanking the RNG for that. I guess he has lots of offense, and some of which is just not too powerful. He caught me with Anti-magic once, which brought an ironic smile to my face :)

I'm still too slow as well. This Elven Cloak of Thievery +6 would solve that completely, but there is the small matter of fire resistance ...

Your tree is going pretty nice, i'm trying out a tree high-mage chaos user. But i have a lot of trouble with the ticking off monsters. I don't have enough hp to let most monsters melee me, but i can't attack from distance because of the retaliation. I started with real mage races, but it was clear to me i wouldn't get over lvl 30 that way. 100-200 hp at lvl 25 is just hard...

But the reason or this post is... i found a rune at lvl 2 in version .35 ^^ I got a 'you nearly faint as horrible visions of death fill your mind!' At lvl 2 in the yeek cave! :D

ow, hahaha even better. I pick it up, 'what a boring level...' i drop it again 'you nearly faint as horrible visions of death fill your mind!' A rune from Hell maybe? But their is something terribly wrong with that rune.

Yeah, runes are now DL110 items with rarity 255 and they still show up extremely common. I guess I need to investigate the object creation code since this is completely ridiculous. Probably, rarity does not mean what I think it means, and perhaps the game picks a TVAL item to generate without regards to depth/rarity etc? Dunno, but for something that should be hundreds of times more rare then PDSM, finding a couple dozen per game seems broken :(

I'll do a Chaos HM next I think ... I'm itching to give another Larry Logrus a go. Beruthiel on Psycho-Spear is one thing, but on Mana Storm, something else entirely! The revenge is harsh, but its been manageable so far for me. Often I let monsters get next to me, but, as you note, that can be hard for a mage, especially early on. Still, this guy killed Loki and Sauron from a distance, so I do think it is doable over all. The way I have been getting pure casters up is to spend a lot of time in the Anti-Melee cave, where getting next to monsters is extremely advantageous. But that is not suitable for early game, and you probably even need telepathy to pull it off.

While I'm on the subject, I think the spellcaster classes need some mid-game power boosts. Perhaps I'll move Magic Rocket, Darkness Storm, Starburst, etc a bit earlier and boost damage a bit. For a straight up mage, as an example, one gets Magic Rocket at DL40 with a fail rate in the 30% range. It does like 180 damage and you can maybe dish out 1200 damage in one run thru your mana. All of this seems incredibly weak to me. If it were a DL35 spell, maybe that would be enough?

Anyway, Mr. Christmas Tree finally got the ?ArtifactCreation and made:
The Set of Dragon Gloves 'Tinsel' [4,+18] {FiShBlNx~Tele}

Picking up Telepathy irks me, and it had Shards and Blindness from the get go. The key was picking up Fire resistance, though, and this allows me to swap in my +6 speed cloak. I think I might have to try the Serpent without Beruthiel after all ...

Now that is something you don't see every day: Shuma-Gorath drops PDSM! OMG! Yay!! Except it is Bladeturner ... Boo ... Hisss :(

At 60lbs, I can't use it.

OK, here is Beruthiel again. But, I really need to get that RoS +12 back in my kit. Perhaps Corwin's gloves will save the day? Also, I'm willing to hang out for more ?Artifact Creation! In the meantime, my psycho-spear is now much more deadly than its normal 300hp damage!

He's nasty in this variant, being easily ticked off and prone to summon all sorts of help. Generally, the battle was psycho-spear, *healing*, psycho-spear, teleport, *destruct*, *destruct*, healing, healing, repeat. But at nearly 900hp a pop, he died pretty quick. Only one triple move by The Serpent, but that was a double move towards me to break thru a granite wall, gain line of sight, and then complete the triple move by taking yet another step towards me. Easily survived :)

Just -3 speed, surprisingly. I was a bit too slow for the final battle, but managed to do OK. Probably, I would have done better without Beruthiel but with my +38% spell power instead, as the extra speed and hitpoints would have made the battle safer, I think. Longer, yes, but I had enough healing to fight the Serpent 5 times over ...
