When a highly promising or already powerful character dies, I tend to get a bit frustrated and mad. I either stop playing for a bit, or roll another character quickly and take ridiculous risks to attempt to get to a good power level way faster than anyone sane would. Most of the time, that character dies in short order, and then I peel away from the keyboard.

Occasionally, though, one of those kamikaze characters slips through the RNG's deathtrapped maze, and the result can be rather spectacular.

Axemasters are all about mega damage, and this is the first of my axemasters to actually get and be able to use a ring of extra attacks +3. Looking back, it might have actually been safer to use another speed ring, but it was way too tempting.

Artifact luck kept pace with my breakneck speed, as the Old Castle coughed up this extremely fine axe. Probably 80% of the time, something acceptable and 'meh' is generated--but regardless it is far better than what you're likely to have at that moment in time. Sometimes you get utter junk, but once in a while a beauty like 'Spoils of Victory' shows up.

First scroll of artifact creation went to the dragon gloves, which I buffed at dlvl 99. Second scroll of artifact creation went to the heavy crossbow that I'm wearing. I had all resists covered, and was pretty sure I wouldn't get a better axe, so I used it, and was very pleasantly surprised to get a bow that had Telepathy on it, allowing me to free up my neck slot for one of the amulets other than the Amulet of Telepathy.

This was another fortunate turn of events (the wearing of the amulet that is) as it had one of my absolute favorite activations--Invulnerability. It's ridiculously rare, and I've only seen it twice--the first time was before the major artifact changes that make immunities nearly extinct on randarts. Such an activation is on par with Enlightenment--also correspondingly rare, and totally cherished when found.

With a speed pot, my speed at +38 for endgame, and I was getting beat up pretty handily despite my outstanding damage output. This is why I think perhaps a 2nd speed ring would've worked better, as the Serpent got double moves on me around 30% of the time. Although I believe it's supposed to be +35 speed, it feels like it's +50 speed.

Anyway, here's where Invulnerability came in. After taking 2 stars off the Serpent's health bar after around 9-10 extremely painful rounds of melee, I had already used half of my healing. I hit the big, bright red IWIN button on the center of the amulet, and managed to knock four stars off the bastard before it got wise to dispel IWIN mode. Of course, it was far from idle during that time, and I was surrounded by 4 cyberdemons, Bahamut and Cerberus. Oh yeah, oops. Forgot to axe those dudes too.

That's where the Invuln pot from the quest turn-ins saved the day. The moment my first invulnerability was dispelled, I was breathed on twice by Bahamut's cronies, and I was at a grand total of 87 HP. Now, the decision was whether or not to scram, drink the Invuln pot or somehow believe that drinking one of my remaining 3 *healing* or 2 Life pots would save me. The sane thing would've been to scram, but remember I was still pissed. Invuln pot it was, and blessed be that action, and only one attack slipped through the next round (don't know exactly what) but my HP was now at 7. Okay NOW let's drink one of those Life potions <(^.-)>

The rest was history as I chopped the psychedelic reptile into large chunks of steak. The remaining invulnerability allowed me to grab the Hammer and Crown, quickly lop off Cerberus's head (he was down to 1 star from all of Bahamut and posse using him for target practice), grab his head and teleport away. Recalled to town and called it a day.

What a whirlwind character, but fortunately things worked out.

Now time to go outside and reacquaint myself with something called the Sun ^^

Till next!

You guys need to stop posting when you find uber weapons or some crazy developer might biff them :D Nah, I need to find one first ...

Congrats on an impressive win!

(The Serpent is an amazing +45 speed, btw.)

Nice! What's the multiplier on Kill Evil? If it's 3, your real damage per round against the Serpent is 1800...

Wait, Chris, what's up with this? "You occasionally get a free round of attacks after moving when wielding Lochaber Axes."

Isn't that supposed to be a polearm master ability? Or is this a badly worded Cleave?

On 7.9.2011 23:42 chris wrote:
Yeah, that's poorly worded.

Changed to:
You occasionally attack an adjacent opponent after killing a foe when wielding X.

Current Mechanics (While we are on the topic):
I felt like always picking an adjacent opponent would just turn into a massacre on every move, at least when fighting weak stuff. So, I currently pick an adjacent location randomly for the cleave attempt. You get two attempts and that is all, so perhaps I made it too weak. If you are surrounded, this will always succeed. If only 2 adjacent foes remain, you fail to cleave 3/4 * 3/4 or 9/16'ths of the time.

Victor, you just finished an Axemaster. What were your impressions? Too weak? I tend to avoid crowds myself :)

On 8.9.2011 01:48 kingvictory2003 wrote:
The extra damage aspect of the axemaster feels good as it stands.

Cleave was indeed very unpredictable, and most often unnoticed, except at high power levels while trudging through a pack of weaklings like Shadow Demons, Clubber Demons, Headlesses, etc. In fact, it annoyed me a couple of times when I was working my way through orc hordes to get at a big baddy, and a Cleave unintentionally killed the sniveling unique orc adjacent to the snaga I had just blasted through. This cuts down the chance of the Serpent summoning a bunch of weaklings (which is one of my favorite things to do to the Serpent). So all in all, a pretty unnoticeable ability that gave minor increases in killing speed against hordes of weaklings.

I would think perhaps a nice improvement to cleave without making it OP would be to have a chance to get a free round of attacks against a monster directly adjacent to the enemy (one square either side, like 3-way strike) upon ATTACKING. This would be more in line with the sweeping strikes I envision an Axemaster using.

Vicious Strike actually grew on me the more I encountered Ultimate Magi :) It was also quite useful when you knew a big bad unique was about to die, but that it would start to flee. You could just go WHAM with Vicious Strikes and it would save you much grief and summons from fleeing uniques.

Crusader Strike was once again on the weak side and saw only occasional use--this was discussed on the Chengband wiki, and changes will be made. It was handy 'out of combat' with a major baddie when I needed to teleport away to recover--a convenient mob nearby could serve as Crusader Strike fodder while the baddie was working its way back to me.

Strike Vulnerability was another skill that had extremely limited use. I used it only twice ever, and the 'twice ever' was two strikes against Combat Echizen, which is the only real constant threat that uses invulnerability. By constant threat, I mean generated awake and supremely annoying (and deadly without rShard). Also, he is a unique-waking machine. Other than Combat though, I could only see occasional use against a Solar, or perhaps Raphael.

Power Attack was perhaps the most consistently solid skill at level 50. The bonus damage and cost of to-hit is in line with the Axemaster spirit, but it might (haven't verified) be bugged to also target friendlies, as I attempted to use a Tonberry against the Serpent, and accidentally ended up swinging at it a few times myself. For the record, that tactic failed pretty miserably with the Serpent's earthquake strikes.

Overall, I definitely used the abilities much more than I did the Daggermaster abilities, and it was one of the more satisfying Weaponmaster subclasses to play.

Just a final suggestion for Weaponmasters overall: make Specializations the weapon class, and Subspecializations the specific type of weapon. This would be more in line with real-life professions where one has a Specialty with an optional Sub-Specialty (even more specialized).
