How about animated books:
The novice mage reads you (next to the wall).
[Call of the Void gets casted...]
[Level gets destroyed...]
The novice mage dies!
You die!

How about something to do with manipulation of liquid metal (mercury or some equivalent)? Perhaps a symbiotic relationship between a spellcaster/psionic and some sort of metallic organism. Wear it like living armour, substitute your weapon hand to wield it like a whip/bendy-straw-spear/whatever or ride it like a pet.
Its power could be relative to how much mana you feed it (subtracted from maximum mana), though if you use all of your mana on it you can't cast spells.
Feed it metallic items to change its properties, or maybe you can buff it with resistances at the cost of maximum mana.
Spells of the spellcaster/psionic would be based around utility and metal/earth manipulation.
Can't say I'm very good at the game or the mechanics, so the idea is probably fundamentally flawed or bad in general.
It's rather weird being able to directly converse to the developer of a game.Comment

I am really liking the ring so far, that being said i think i enjoyed having low charisma and being thrown a lot at lower levels, more than hanging on to the same host. Although It would probably be way too hard at higher levels.
(Maybe give rings a speed/resistance buff when they are fist thrown?)
Not knowing what will pick you up is pretty cool. I personally believe the get off pet command should be removed though, it's too easy to just wait for a great mount as it is. And having to fight on an inferior mount adds challenge/fun and a lot more variety, than just waiting for the fastest most powerful guy.
Just my 3 cents, looking forward to tomorrow so i can continue in the competition.
Quick edit, maybe remove charm ability so if your thrown you need to kill or flee your host. I love the Glitter ability and it's potential random gameplay, but think it should be 100% success with the tradeoff of being stuck with whoever picks you up.Last edited by UglySquirrell; April 12, 2014, 18:30.Comment

I would vote for multiplayer in PosChengband. Maybe not Massively Multiplayer, but I just wonder if Trivially Multiplayer wouldn't be fun. There are always a few people but not many online--I think the Pos world would be kinda fun to share with the 6-20 people playing at any given time.
I realize that would be a tall order, but I honestly think it would be a blast. Maybe initially if you could just see other online players moving around the screen, sort of like ghosts. You wouldn't have to even interact--maybe just chat and say hello.
The new PosChengband is amazing, and the comp has been one of my most interesting Angband experiences of the last 15 years. [Holy cow, 15? But yeah, like 15.] There are several Pos classes I still would like to go back and try, or try again. I feel like if there are going to be changes then my votes would be for more content and turning the game into a TMO. But seriously, as it is, what an awesome variant.Comment

Code:N:1129:Moldoth, Lord of Dampness He is the Master of the Moldy Pits of Angband. He rages with everlasting hydrolysis, seeking forever to colonize all that is light and not moldy in the world. He is the origin of man's fear of dampness and has fouled many creations with his putrescent spores. Brown, Violet, and Shadow Molds are his most foul corruptions, causing much stat drain and confusion in the world to please him. In his right rhizopod he bears Frond, the mighty Tendril of the Underworld. His disgusting moldage, twisted with mycotoxins, is crowned with siderophores, the three Moldmarils forever burning him.

V4 hopes would be an interval of special focus on polish in all respects and any/all things relative to attracting newcomer players from all over---help screens brought up to date, documentation, etc.
Though if you just want to go nuts....port over one or more of the rather extreme classes and whatnot from Portralis.Comment

One thing I personally like is theme drops like brand's crossbow, or sets like the hand and eye of Vecna for the Necromancer. FA also has sets I believe though I don't know too much about them. The beauty of the current poscheng ruleset for these though is you don't know if you'll get the theme drop or not, thus cementing the operant conditioning/intermittent reward hook. I suppose more could be done along these lines, like a bonus/reward for nabbing all of the camelot knights, camelot villains, orc uniques, angel uniques, etc.
Also, themed chests with very good contents a la steamband are very cool (think potion chests, armor chests, weapon chests, jewelry chests). I think NPP has a nice chest implementation too.Comment

Yeah, I also like themed drops, though I hear that at least one of the two necromancer artifacts (the light source?) sucks really badly compared to other light sources of that/lesser rarity...not to mention that the necro itself sucks, since melee attacks for a mage are bad, powerful summons are unreliable sooner or later, and levelling via summons results in a big xp penalty. Sad thing, because I was initially excited about the necromancer, but in reading on I became disappointed and stopped playing them.
As an aside, I've suicided 3 warriors in a row who couldn't find the secret room with the last warg. Doing that quest without detection magic can be fine, but these times it was really a dragging grind.
Of course, as a reminder to chris, I'm only able to post such complaints because I keep feeling the urge to play your variant, so don't take it as just negative!
edit: lawl debo. "Frond" hahahaComment

FYI, you can always leave the Wargs level and return. The game keeps track of the number of Wargs killed and DOES NOT reset the counter if you leave the level. Absolutely no need to kill off your characters if you're unable to find that last WargMy best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:
