Raal's Tome of Destruction at 150 feet.

In Neoband, of course, with an Assassin who can't use it. But still.

Yeah, you can go to the other thread and read all the "rational explanations" if you want - I prefer to think it's actually emergent behaviour of the RNG. Have you ever noticed how often it happens right after finding an OOD speed ring?

That's usually Nexus Q. Fast enough that you usually don't get a turn before it gets at mid-game, empty-mind so no ESP-warning and IIRC invisible so no detect monster detects it and non-evil so detect evil doesn't do that either. Reveal monsters which detects invisibles too and detection detects that.

I hate those buggers, especially when one of those is in a room containing something interesting. If you can't detect its exact position before LoS it can take several tries to pinpoint where it is and kill it out of its LoS.

    a) teleport away Ar-P and a Great Crystal Drake
    b) saunter into the now apparently highly do-able vault
    c) get teleported away by something unseen to the room containing Ar-P, sustaining damage
    d) teleport myself to the room containing the GCD, sustaining damage
    e) teleport myself back to the room containing Ar-P, sustaining damage
    f) teleport myself back to the room containing the GCD, sustaining a rather nasty dose of DEATH

Have often idly wondered, is the 'bouncing between the same points' by design?

They're relatively new (like, in the last year or so). Someone was feeling creative.

Don't think I've encountered either of those before, although I guess I might have done at a CL/DL where it didn't seem unduly nasty.

I didn't realise such out-of-depthery was even possible outside of vaults.
That could be Disguised Checkerboard, I encountered one in dlvl 28, Ungoliath came out with +20 speed and promptly breathed darkness. Timo pointed out the discuised checkerboard to me, here is his post

True, but QuzzlyWuzzlyWup looks utterly awesome in Shockbolt tiles!

It doesn't even require that kind of layout - I have had games where his first summon filled up the available space with weak group creatures like orcs, and he just sat there like a punching bag for the rest of the fight. (In older versions creatures used to try and summon anyway, so you'd get spammed with summoning messages with no result).

Anyway, my 'whoa' moment: (although this was more stupid/lucky than awesome)

Playing a paladin, fighting dragons/demons while partially surrounded. I've been healing up when I get low, but leave one a bit too long and then fail on the cast attempt. One of the dragons chooses that moment to unleash a big breath on me, I think single resisted lightning or something of the sort. This takes me down to 31HP and I'm looking at a <more> prompt, knowing that two or three other creatures in range of me have yet to move. I hit space bar a few times, fearing the worst. There are no more breaths, just a lot of melee attacks, and I come out the other end still alive and on 3 HP.

Mages and priests can learn the spells in dungeon spellbooks much earlier than the hybrid classes can, so there might well be something castable in there as early as clvl 10 or so. However, manastorm is gonna have to wait.

is that book actually useful early on? I remember finding the top priest book with a paladin very early on (before I had any of the other higher books) and I was rather disappointed because I was 10 levels away from being able to learn the spells, even more before I could cast any with reasonable failure rate.
