Speaking of sword spiders and annoying deaths...

Nursing a slow starting smith to 250 and trying to fully explore it... 6 sword spiders being on the level, and killing 4 of them painstakingly around corners, each taking several hundred turns because you get unlucky with rolls and have to retreat to heal before trying again. Finding that all the time wasted has allowed some green worms to infest the forge room. Dropping all your armor and managing to clear the worms. Forge a few nice pieces of armor and open the door to the forge, and finding that you missed a worm, who while you were forging, infested the way to the stairs. Dying trying to get past them.

I had a funny death today. I usually don't have too many troubles with sword spiders, but this one was about to eat my lungs. So, I did the duck-around-the-hallway-and-rest thing... and then after I healed halfway up, he came out! Apparently, a centipede pushed him into the room. Or, maybe he was returning to his native room... Either way, I was shocked to see him come into the room.
      You are on something strange

Having a promising start and running into a brown mold in a corridor at 200ft. Getting confused, and, as you try to move away from it, bumping into a wall. 18 times in a row. Dying.

Based on my reading of the code, that's a 1 in 1000 chance. 20/64 chance each time to walk in the right direction.

Just happened again. Instadeath due to brown mold in a corridor. 18 fails to walk in the right direction in a row, again. One orcish liquor consumed.

God I hate stuff like that.

Well my brown molds glow now, just like my violet molds. Must be some sort of mold infection spreading throughout the dungeons!

              > The Spider of Gorgoroth bites you.
              > You fall into a deep trance!
              > The Ururauko hits you!!
              > You are enveloped in flames!
              > You die.

With double free action and 8 points in will.

good one. Did you have fire resist? If not, nice 7d10

I had it on Narsil, but I wasn't wielding it at that moment because I was fighting a kemenrauko just before. I thought double free action at least stops entrancement completely (then this would not have happened), but no. Isn't free action a +10 each?

What's the check roll for slow on a caltrops trap? I walked over one several times to verify I had greaves of free action on, only to die 100' later wearing greaves of treacherous paths.

Does having multiple sources of free action really stack? I thought it was binary ala Angband.

                      Perception
Helps you avoid stepping on a caltrop trap.
                      difficulty = 10

Then the slowness itself is Will + (10 if Free Action) vs 10, as far as I can tell from the manual, assuming caltrops work the same as other sources of slow.

So, I thought effect resistances stacked in Sil (same way the elemental ones do), but resistances to effects use allow_player_aux which only takes a flag -- so you either have your resistance or you don't.

This explains why you were able to be entranced -- M has 11 will, with d10 can go as high as 21. Your effective 18 will against entrancement still means you were pretty unlucky....

After losing a couple of @'s to blindness and entrancement ( shadow spiders and big red ones respectively ), just to clarify, resist fear and resist entracement don't stack like the elemental resistances?
So like for the elemental serpents, if @ does not have the requisite resists don't bother the spiders?

Also, what other sources of free action aside from final rest weapons and greaves are there in the game?

I had final rest and greaves, but among others there are Shortsword of Amrod, Robe of Aredhel (+3 evasion + free action), Song of Freedom and rings.

This isn't an annoying death per se as it was so early in the game but still.... I was at full health chasing a fleeing orc warrior with my Gondolin Battle Axe. I step into a dark room next to a sword spider and I roll a 1 for both evasion checks to the spiders 20 and 18 offensive rolls. It then rolls 17 and 27 on its two 3d9 attacks leaving me barely alive. In the same turn the orc warrior then turns to fight, beats my evasion by 1 and rolls 21 on its 3d7 attack. I am very dead without right of reply.
