Same here for me. Even with decent Perception they can be irritatingly hard to take down due to their armour rating. If they were easier to damage as bron suggests, I think they would be improved.

Another easier start/limited growth challenge: You will not sully your hands with the discarded gear of The Enemy. You are here for one thing, and one thing only -- well, three things, actually, but I digress...

Start with a set of basic gear (no bonuses, no mithril, no egos, one item for each non-jewelry equipment slot) of your choice. You are not allowed to pick up any non-consumable item (ie: anything but food, potions, torches, oil, staves, arrows, mithril) -- all equipment improvements must be forged. You are allowed to pick up mithril items, but may not equip them - they may only be melted down for the metal.

Bonus difficulty: you are not allowed to pick up any item. Consumables may only be used from the floor. Recovered arrows (that you made yourself) are okay, but forging stat gear just got a lot chancier, there will be no mithril, staves are much less useful, and food may become an issue unless you devote valuable slots to it...

Maybe, decreasing Salraukar evasion and increasing its HP would balance it a bit.

Without light grotesques attack as well (I believe, no guarantee).

Believe it or not, without light Grotesques actually do attack and can kill characters.

I wonder if anyone could pull off a majesty-based character. Start off with a bit of stealth, and build will throughout the game. With smithing, it might even possible to max grace. Add in 20 points in will, And that's -10 morale everywhere you go.

I think Psi did this once. I don't quite recall his progression though. It may also have been song of mastery and I may be remembering incorrectly.

http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=13491 is a song of mastery character, although it seems that it wasn't that way from the beginning. Now with crowns of Mastery, I guess you could try that.

Does Song of Majesty cause creatures to flee who otherwise wouldn't?

Because I'd be worried about such a character being stomped by trolls, etc who don't care about trifles like a negative morale bar.

Song of Mastery freezes enemies in their tracks. Majesty makes weaker enemies flee.

Well with Song of Elbereth, Majesty, Bane, Slaying Weapons, Cruel Blow (all effect enemy moral) it should be possible to send most non-aggressive enemies to flight. Majesty + Rauko-Bane + some bonus for killing someone in sight were enough for me to disperse the entire entourage of Turkano aka "Balrog of the Hosts without the Hosts". Afaik Aggressive is a +20 bonus to moral so when you really maximize fear - I wonder whether some trolls might consider fleeing as well.

If I were ever to try a no-stealth archer fear would certainly my main defense mechanism.

Another possible challenge: Minimal XP challenge. Who achieves a win with the smallest amount of experience points spent?

I am looking for successful (pacifist) singer builds. I know of winners by Satyr, scatha and half, can anyone guide me to other successful pacifists?

If you look at winners with low experience these will tend to be pacifist (or almost pacifist).

For minimal xp (and turncount) this ascension death of mine is about as low as you could go. I don't believe it's feasable to win with this little xp after 1.0.2 however, both vanish requiring higher stealth (going for as low a turncount as possible, my pacifists do not get 20+ stealth so I don't even take it) and everything becoming more perceptive after taking a sil means that once you start going up, a vampire lord will spot you at some point and then you just die.

Maybe ultra low xp/turncount is possible still with some very unbalanced song bias, but no one has established a proper build for that. I won stealth/song only but that requires a fairly high turncount.
