Monks are fun. Early detection is fun. Time for the Orc Quest!

On 15.2.2010 20:23 chris wrote:
[CL28:DL30] 01:24
I don't know why monks never shoot ... they aren't bad at it. Orc Q had a _Power, which I managed to activate slaughtering an entire room full of orcs, and sending Golfimbul into a panic! DQI had Totila and a blessed weapon for 40k gold, so I scummed the towns hoping for resistance. No dice, but I scored a +6 wisdom amulet and this nice shooter, along with a _Speed. So I figured I'd do the DL24 quest despite no resistance, and got a lucky draw, but total crap on the drop (Cloak of Protection and bolts of slay evil). So now I dive to stat gain, but probably, I will scum the tower after all. The top of the Dragon's Lair is so much more fun ...

On 15.2.2010 20:39 chris wrote:
[CL30:DL30] 01:36
Oh, OK. In a rare stroke of luck, I was able to just buy some armor of elvenkind with only 2 days of scumming. I also got a +4 elven cloak, so I'll try to forgo the Tower altogether with this character. The gold for these goodies came from granite walls, which are just as profitable to farm in Angband as in the tower (CL22 -> CL30 plus 65k gold). Now, where are those fabled stat potions I keep hearing about?

The game really slows down in Angband about this time. I'd like to try the Cloning Pits, but alas, I think I better build a bit. On my wish list are
[1] Source of Levitation other than a ring. I'll swap rings with confusion resistance if need be, though.

[2] 5th attack. That's coming soon, right?

[3] Staves of speed. I guess I'll do it with my lone staff, as I have quite a few potions.

So first, let me knock of some dragons. I managed Scatha, but it took a while. Oh, and check out my nice shooter. How come my "Lucky" characters are never so Lucky?

On 15.2.2010 23:39 chris wrote:
[CL35:CloningPits] 03:46
The Dragon's Lair was really tough going at first. No telepathy and only 160 damage/round with little stunning effects. An Ice Wyrm required 2 !Healing, and I was about to quaff a 3rd but pulled it out with 200hp to spare. At the time, I had 710hp, which was nice.

It got a little better after that, and I finally scummed towns for a ring of damage, swapped agility for a 5th attack, and then I was somewhat OK. But wasting a turn to detect monsters at DL60 is ... well ... scary :)

So I hit CL35, and did the Cloning Pits. It was shaping up to be a poor quest (unless this Angelic Page has key resistances ... another awesome shooter for Mr. Melee!). But the very last Gachapin dropped Jack of Shadows, and that quickly turned the quest into one of my best ever. OK, its not ***FEANOR*** or anything, but we can't all be so lucky :D :D :D

[CL42:DL63] 05:53
Pretty good going so far. Celegorm with disenchantment resistance. Thranduil with poison resistance. As is typical, sound resistance remains a gaping hole for the monk. Amazing finds of Shiva's Armor from an Ice Wyrm and Aglarang, though I can hardly use the latter.

I think I'll head to the bottom of the Lair now. The DL76 quest is probably too much for me just yet ...

On 16.2.2010 02:38 kingvictory2003 wrote:
Hehehe, well honestly in a regular game, I'd almost prefer Jack of Shadows to Feanor, as a monk's endgame speed is generally enough to manage it without too much difficulty. Telepathy on the other hand can be a pain in the ass to find, as Amber >>>> Thranduil, and Jewel >>> Palantir etc... But yeah, Feanor for the 1 day challenge can't be beat, no doubt about it.

Awaiting your report of a tenderized Serpent, and a poisoned Metal Babble!

Boy, this guy is boring next to Dave's Destroyer. No rockets for me :) But, I will take Indra as I really really want to be able to cast Herbal Healing. Please, just a few more !Wisdom to go!

Here you go, Victor! Arena Champion!!!! The babble is a complete pushover, its just getting to it that is hard. But the GWoP must have been mega stunned or something, as I only needed to herbal heal 3 times.

BTW, my babble strategy is to immediately lay down a forest (you always get the first move) and then just wait for the babble to appear next to me in the trees. It will never get off an attack this way, and you can just leisurely poke it with the needle until it dies. No sense struggling with the difficult wall of stone spell ...

I'm trying to dive for my DL88 quest, when Lo! Feanor! But I think Victor is right. For the monk, Jack's cloak might be a better early find. If I wear these boots, I lose an attack! But the extra speed might be nice later on if I can, say, find Vilya or something. Giving up an attack is blasphemy!

I figured my best chance for Amber was to kill Oberon, and he obliged. He often does. So, I shuffle Gogo and Feanor in for a high speed kit, and plunge for the Serpent of Chaos. At first, the battle was a dream. 2 stars relinquished with nary a summon. But then things changed. Nothing like 50-60 greater demons suddenly appearing by your side. In the end, I had to fight Yog-sothoth and the Serpent side by side, using my whirlwind attack to damage both. It was a bit scary, since both are capable of blasting >50% of my hp in a single move, but I just could not separate the two. And, if you check the final screenshot on the score server, you will see Yoggie at last fleeing in terror, me alone with the Serpent, but Great Cthulhu lurking just a few squares off ready to breathe is famous disintegration breath. And a stray cyberdemon too! Still, it was a fairly quick and easy win.

+50 speed with a 3% herbal healing is supremely powerful!

Nice job, and yes, nature makes killing the babble pretty much a joke. With regards to the GWoP, I actually think it may be possibly easier to go at it with the poison needle as well as its auras HURT.

Killer Herbal Healing fail rate btw--that's one fearsome monk that can heal so well!
