Here we go again. Playing a lucky life monk now, as I need both life and luck in Hengband. Too bad so far i have found only 3 ego weapons and no ego armour. Last trip down I did find two artifacts though.

SACRILEGE!

J/k :) Diagnosis: you really, really need more Dex to allow those extra attacks to kick in earlier. I salute your picking of the Lucky personality...you will need plenty of patience with the lackluster stats a Lucky character starts with. But you will be rewarded in the end, if you survive (we all hope!).

Best,

Victor

Yeah, I'm using a weapon ;). Actually that's just for the +1 WIS bonus. Damage output at this point is roughly equivalent with barehanded combat and that nunchaku, so I figured I could use the extra WIS for a small boost in spellcasting.

This one is really going slow. Even though the character class is 'lucky' I'm having trouble getting better equipment and the depth I'm at now is about as far as I dare to go without SI and preferably some more resists.

Oh after the dump I switched the Sumo armour for the Elvenkind rag and I'm wearing the rPoison ring (from BM) and rLiDk ring now (should help a bit against being blinded by light/dark attacks), and got 'pseudo SI' from the +7 Infra helmet. I did have to give up +4 STR (damage!) and CON (about 40 hp) for that (and sustains) but I hope it's worth it.

I do need more speed tho, just the +3 from the monk is getting a bit dangerous.

Not sure if I could already take on the Old Castle, so I'm just fighting in the dungeon some more; the only time I did the Old Castle quest (AND pulled it off) was with a stealthy ninja character (and that was already quite a lot of work).

The only time i got into trouble was when accidentalyl using my staff of power instead of my staff of speed in the Greater Titan room when I was preparing the fight with them, thus waking them up and starting summoning. It wasn't too bad though, nothing particularly nasty summoned.

A superb level in the castle earlier left me fighting (not all at once, though) Hoarmurath, Garm, Druaga, Zhar, Jack of Shadows and Brand. The last one luckily didn't hit me with a bloodcurse :).

Actually, you can't use the scroll on a ring or an amulet... nomally an eleven cloak of +4 stealth is a good choice, or you'd better to use it on some useful dragon gloves. A long bow seems not bad, but the Brand's crossbow and the gun is so powerful and I can't recommend it.

Corpse hunting going fine, need only 7 more: Dionysus, Benedict, Richard Wong, Combat Echizen, Qlzqqzzp, and Cerberus. A few of those kinda worry me after looking at their stats ^^.

Don't worry too much about Dionysus and Benedict too much. Dionysus is a pure wimp if you have reflection, and a wimp without. Think of Benedict as a slightly souped-up version of Gerard. He does hit sorta hard melee, but with your AC, healing spells/items and damage, the only thing you have to worry about is the Blood Curse.

Richard Wong is mildly worrysome, with his time melee attacks, and his Stop The Time skill, but he really isn't super bad. Get yourself into a small room, or even tunnel yourself a jagged corridor, and let him come to you (he has PASS_WALL). Pummel him until you get too drained or hurt, teleport away, restore/heal, and let him come to you again. Rinse and repeat--he'll be dead.

Cerberus is a heavy hitter, but with double resists and an anti-summoning corridor, he's not too bad.

Combat Echizen's only worrying attack is his rocket launcher. But lo! You have shard and sound resists covered, so again, stand in a corridor and let him come to you (avoiding his rocket ball radius) and beat the crap out of him. Also make sure you always have rDisenchant active around him.

Qlz, well there's a bad boy. Branded seeker arrows will take him (it?) pretty well, but again, being a monk your best bet is getting close enough to get your hands dirty. Easiest thing to do is to get at least +20 speed, tunnel next to him, hope he doesn't summon the turn you dig, and rip him to shreds with your iron fingers.

Now if you want to talk NASTY uniques, you should look up, Shuma-Gorath and Nodens, and the Unicorn. Now Nodens, there's a guy who's sent a handful of my level 50's to Davy Jones' in less time than the telling. The Unicorn is arguably nastier than the Serpent, but that discussion is for another time :)

Good luck and keep us posted.

But getting *out* alive is so unbelievably difficult (whoever designed those rooms with drujs to get to the exit should receive a "cruelty award" :P).

Diatribe attempted a direct approach first, stone to mud to get in and try to take out the drujs, however immediately was outsummoned and blasted with whirlpools. Critical situation (down to half HP) due to a manastorm from a summoned black reaver and teleported out.. right into the other druj room! Their round of spells followed, leaving Diatribe with 150ish hp. Sheer lucky to be alive after that (and yay for *healing* potions!), he could take down one druj in melee and finish the rest (plus summons) off with staffs of dispel evil, a staff of holiness and dispel evil spells.

Anyway, found Ringil there, too bad useless for a monk. Eric's quest rendered nothing useful either.

The unique Q that was the last monster to beat ofcourse summoned special opponents the moment I broke through the wall. Luckily, most uniques have been killed already and he came up with the GHB (lol) and Tulzscha (not too bad), and friendly Fundin.

Sauron didn't give me any problems (but dropped only worthless stuff), and neither did Shuma (it got one summon in, and he summoned some stupid hydras).

If I checked it correctly, there's only 9 hostile uniques remaining. Lion Heart (just didnt run into him I guess :p); the Minotaur of the Labyrinth (let's just say I hate the labyrinth and didn't need the rod of recall); Vecna (didn't go that deep in the graveyard yet); Caldarm, Nodens, the Unicorn, and the big three, Oberon, Morgy and the Serpent.

Using Artifact-creation on a really useful item is worth trying but also is a bit dangerous - occasionally it ends up with adding Anti-teleportation or Anti-Magic.

May the RNG smile upon you!

Okay, really made some progress now. First of all, I managed to beat Nodens. He was quite a pain, I powered up and waited for him to get to me.. first thing he does when he emerges in the wall next to me is.. yeah, summon the Unicorn. Great. Teleported out, taking Nodens with me but leaving the unicorn (pretty interesting feature that some monsters tag along with you!). Got in a few blows, but then he summoned a bunch of angels (tho his mana storm wasn't very nice either). The fight took a while like that, but I finally bested him. Luckily didn't teleport back near the unicorn again. Gave up on cleaning the level from his summons to get to the unicorn, it was a half open level so not very favourable for fighting anyway.

After fruitlessly looking around dlev 98 for a while for more uniques I gave up, stocked up a bit and hit dlev 99, only to hit the jackpot: oberon AND the unicorn. Somehow I got only Oberon chasing me first, so singled out I could fight him. He was quite tough, but it was pretty straightforward fight. He used dispel magic once (so tele out and rebuff), and summoned once (greater undead, but the confined space only allowed one medium level Lich). He didn't put a blood curse on me \o/.

Had a lot more difficulties with the Unicorn, that used dispel magic quite some times and also got a few summons in. Had to phase and tele a few times to get out of troublesome situations. In all, I used one *Healing*, a few Healing, one restoration mushroom and 2 or 3 restore life levels to finally beat him.

Side note: all of them dropped worthless junk. Only the Unicorn came up with an artifact, the battle axe of Balli stonehand.. and I can't even use it!

Now, I think I want to scum a bit for a better kit (maybe some of the elven rings, or something to be able to replace my cloak). Is it correct that the unicorn is actually faster than the Serpent? Any ideas welcome :).

Yes she is the second fastest monster in the game (I think I don't have to mention about the number one.)
but actually they're almost the same.

The Serpent is more "powerful" than the Unicorn, but not nastier...
He does have poweful breath weapons and rockets and the hand of doom, and annoying summoning, but no manastorms, no teleporting spells.
And you have the Jacket of Shiva's Avatar, his "reduce all stats" attack won't work, unlike the Unicorn's "time" attack.

Not an easy fight, of course, but you already have enough speed and stats, and I do think you've almost won the game!
Some more ? of destruction, maybe?

i think you don´t need that, cuz
1. Youll never find bows better than brand / gun.
2. Youll never find a weapon better than your fists
3. Youll never find armors better than Shiva. For a monk, even PDSM is worse.
4. Youll never find ego boots better than shiva. IMHO only Feanor is better... I wouldnt exchange Shiva for BoS even +15... especially cuz u already got lots of speed
5. Youll probably never find ego gloves better than fingolfin / cambeleg. But GoP can have hi-res... No match to good dragon gloves or artifact gloves thu.
5. eh wow your helm is awesome lol

Well so you could use automatizer like this: (copy paste from another char

armors:dragon#%all <=- this picks and inscribes all dragon gear, scales for money and rest for obvious... can take this off as you dont need money nor dragon gear i think.. nothing will beat that helm... also prevents destruction
unidentified small leather shield
unidentified small metal shield
unidentified ethereal cloak
unidentified shadow cloak
unidentified ethereal cloak
unidentified elven cloak

!unidentified weapons
!unidentified armors
!nameless weapons
!nameless armors

{special} <=-- if you are curious about artifacts or want to sell. Pick them up in second pass.

And this would also improve your sacrifice virtue, believe me :)
used to carry 4 - of perception only.

Maybe your slaying ring had low damage and u didnt notice change... with 11 attack +21 rings gives around +200 damage to average damage/ round. (now that i think of it DOH 11*21 *lol*). Second time was a bit easier, teleported Morgoth away when he was summoned (no other uniques were summoned other than Fundin again...) and pummeled SoC into oblivion, healing, teleporting, genociding in time when needed. Same for Morgy, with the difference that Morgoth was much easier =].
