I hope someone gets the joke.

Nevertheless, Gustav has been a phenomenally successful monk so far. I got Belthronding off of one of the Gachapins in the Cloning Pits, and it boosted my dex to 18/*** so I had six blows/round at level 35 without using the White Tiger form.

And before I forget to mention, Craft is a really nifty and fun spell realm!

Until Next,

Posting after I finished the Old Castle, because as a monk, you receive what is perhaps my favorite armor in all of the *bands--the Leather Jacket of Shiva's Avatar. With sustain all stats, resist low, life draining and shards, slow digestion, extra to-hit, to-damage and an extra attack on top of all that, you can't really argue.

The new bow I got from (I think) a Great Bile Wyrm gives me sound resist, nether resist, and telepathy with a +4 speed icing on top. Regretfully, I lose the extra stealth and res disenchantment that I had with Belthronding, but I think ATM resist nether is a bit more essential. The telepathy is reduntant with Thranduil, but Thranduil's +2 Wis and, more importantly, resist blindness, can't be shunned. I could use Hammerhand, but Thranduil does a bit better at this time. Thorin is sitting in my inventory for the numerous encounters I've had with Great Bile Wyrms, where with the shield I can beat the crap out of them without fear of painful acidic retribution.

Doom Quest 2 gave a very unsatisfactory award: a Staff of Healing. They aren't common, but they aren't uncommon either, and having to tangle with a mess of Iron Liches, a Maulotaur, a Hell Night, numerous U's and u's was annoying enough to warrant a better reward. Having to tangle with a summoned Dark Elven Shade without resist darkness *really* made me wish I got a better reward. Each of the fool's darkness storms took off around 300 to 320 damage, so each time I was slammed down to 125 or so HP. Fortunately, being the wily person I am, I managed to outsmart and out-speed the Dark Elven Shade and punch the hell out of him before he could storm me to death.

I think this quest would be another good one for tailored awards, althouth probably not as powerful as the artifacts granted in the Old Castle Quest. Same goes for the Spawning Pits--a BDSM is surely a fine piece of armor, but not rare once you get down to sufficient depths. And if you're ready to tackle the Spawning Pits, you surely are ready to be at sufficient depths. For myself, I've never bothered so far to attempt the Spawning Pits in Heng, because of the ball-radius summoning, which makes Quylthulgs that much, much, much nastier.

Anyways, enough ranting. Bleh. I'm really enjoying my kit, and can't help noticing each time how sexy an amulet Sacred Knights really is. A big THANK YOU! goes to the Hengband development team for making truly *interesting* and fun new amulet artifacts. Thanks, guys!

First time I've had a better bows/throw artifact on hand BEFORE getting Crimson. Oh well, I'll keep Crimson around anyways because I may want the stealth boost at some point, and just because it's plain cool.

Cleaned house a bit, and added some extra taxidermies to the Museum. I hope their display cases are well-refrigerated.

As of clevel 42, I've been able to wear Thorin with alll of my equipment without disrupting my balance. Before, I had to remove another piece of armor to retain my intrinsic + to speed and blows. The switch to Heng 1.6.0 was flawless, and now I don't have to go through the extreme annoyance of getting sanity-blasted every time I hit Ctrl-S to save in the presence of a sanity-blasting monster.

Now to find a ring of extra attacks +3...

Getting better and better! Hitpoints are actuallly pretty darn decent at 719. The only real annoyances now are the lack of resist disenchantment and darkness. I've been swapping Pitch Dark Night now and then for the resist darkness when I fought enemies like Hastur, Ungoliant, Atlach-Nacha, and other heavy-hitting darkness monsters. I hope to meet Jack of Shadows soon, flatten him with my hands and feet, and get the Cloak of Jack of Shadows from him. I think the actual chance is rather slim for that chosen drop, though. Or maybe it's not even a chosen drop.

I miraculously managed to pound my way to the Great Wyrm of Power in the Arena using my fists and spellbooks--a real testament to the power of a Craft Monk. The Great Wyrm of Power fell to our favorite weapon: a Poison Needle (1d1) (+0, +0) :)

9 blows per round, baby. I'm still waiting to find a ring of extra attacks, since it'll be even better than the ring of damage I'm currently using. Constitution could be a lot better, but stat potions are rarer in Heng than in all other variants.

I'm still hanging out in the Mines, cleaning up the mid-deep uniques you find here, and also picking up whatever nice items happen to be lying there. Not a dungeon for the faint of heart!

One more level to go...

Combat Echizen was real hell to kill: I found the only way to kill him was to isolate him so he doesn't heal up in the vicinity of other monsters (because of his "good" alignment).

A couple of close calls with disenchantment--I forgot to wield Belthronding before engaging the disenchanting enemies, but both disenchants were resisted.

I finally found a ring of extra attacks, but it was only +1, which is fit for store gold or Sacrifice virtuie fodder.

Well, level 50 finally. I got Narya on the way from Rupart the General.

Once I get a ring of extra attacks +3, Stone Mask will be lighting my house on fire, so I might wear it to get the intrinsic resist poison and darkness of a Vampire to lose Frakir.

'Till next,

Heh, I noticed several earlier incarnations of the monk Gustav Mauler in the Hengband world scores list--were these all you as well?

Nice to see this incarnation working out so well--my monks usually die when I forget that they are monks, not berserkers, and I rush them into quests too early. :)

You got it, Cliff. I think one got roasted by the Phoenix, and another dissolved into a puddle of goo by a Great Bile Wyrm (but just barely). I do indeed like to rush things a bit by going to the Dragon Caves to speed up exp gain, and to pick up a nice items from dead dragons. This character was certainly no exception. The risks are high, but if you're careful, it can be done.

Regarding your quest observations: yes, a monk must be exceedingly conservative when tackling quests. For instance, when I completed the Thieves' Quest right from the point of incarnation (as everyone presumably does), I needed around 15 or so poorman's fireballs (flasks of oil) to make sure I didn't die. You especially don't want to fail Cloning Pits and The Old Castle, since their rewards are incredibly good.

Berserkers are certainly fun and good, but stealthy classes are funm too. Learning to play a Monk is challenging, but once you learn, they can become tremendously powerful.

Good luck,

Victor

I actually start my monks with traditional dungeoneering and get them a few levels (e.g. to level 4/5) before attempting the Thieves Quest.

Now if I can only force myself to be that patient after the Warg Quest. :)

I think I will return to attempting samurai--a bit more challenging than berserkers at the early stages, but a bit more flexible later on.

I'm still fond of monks though--it was the monk implementation that brought me to Hengband in the first place. :)
