My first Winner. Cheap since Steam Mechas are the easiest characters to run - but my previous 300 or so characters all died, so I am just as happy.

Here are some tips:

a) For Dashing Hussars - most of the Hussar skills are just ok ... with two exceptions. Early on the character gets a powerful armor up. (ability e on the original hussar list). Much more importantly ... on the elite skills list there is skill j - TRIPLE STRIKE.
TRIPLE STRIKE is a game winner. It is a must have ability. Absolutely positively develop hussar skills and then elite skills until you get triple strike. Nothing else is as good.

b) Steam Mecha Rocketry is ho hum. Lots of enemies resist it perfectly well. I wouldn't bother putting skill points into it.

c) Riflery and guns in general require all out commitment to have much effect. Invest heavily or don't invest at all. This character went intermediate and could use the rifle to eliminate some nuisance characters. However, riflery did little in important battles.

d) This character blew most of the early quests although later quests did ok. I missed the skill point rewards from early quests. Implication: Mecha's cream their way through the dungeon at the easy levels. But don't get too arrogant before hitting a quest level. Do two or three trips between quests just to power up and improve - or you will lose your early quests.

e) Piercing works better than any other weapon type due to fewer creatures resisting piercing.

f) No creatures resist picks and shovels. A good pick with a good combat bonus kills creatures who are hard to kill with non-magic methods. Ether stalkers come notably to mind
