Hmmm ... I wonder what that sword is. Plus, my stat raises all went to Dex and Str. I pretty quick start for this Illiterate Robot.

No scrolls! I even set up my pickup.prf to destroy them (which is why my play time is so high at this point ;-)

After the quick start (Force Sword), I did the standard ensemble of quests (Orcs and DQI) as well as DL6. Nothing too interesting of note. After walking back up to town from the depths of Angband (hey, DL6 is pretty deep ;), I decided I better go get my only source of recall from the Labyrinth. Tough, but not too bad.

On the wow side is this shooter I just purchased. +20 dam is sweet, though I had to sell my ring of flames to afford it since I just blew most of my gold on these nifty gauntlets of slaying.

Time for the DL12 quest, and let's hope my boots of jumping provide enough blinking to keep me alive!

Oh, and its hard to remember not to use scrolls. I actually bought a ?oEnchantWeaponToDam, as it is my habit to enchant crossbows early for warriors, but I caught myself in time and used the archery service instead (which is actually cheaper!)

A couple really close calls. First, I found a quartz vein in the dungeon, and decided to mine a bit. But every freaking annoying bad thing under the sun happened, including an Umber Hulk tearing the level wide open, out of control breaders, packs of annoying dark hounds, a pack of obnoxious magic mushrooms, Bolg with an entourage of numerous extent, a confusion happy dark elven lord, a confusion and summoning happen Mi Go. I was lucky to escape, only netting about 40,000gp. Enough to buy Thunderer, which does everything my robe of resist lightning was doing and more, not to mention 280,000 more cp, or so.

The second close call was the Vault. One step and I got teleported (not sure by what) and blinded (light hounds). That's it, I never could keep my eyes open for more than a single turn. And then my mind got blasted, so I started hallucinating. Fortunately, I zapped my rod of recall almost immediately and it kicked in before I died (or used any of my precious !oHealing).

I think I'll do the Tower Q a bit ... its much safer, and with a Lucky Android, too difficult to resist.

OK, I'm a moron. I totally forgot about _oTeleport until I identified one. I guess this character won't be as difficult as I thought ...
So I scummed for telepathy. I really lack the patience to play warriors without this (I'd settle for esp evil), and telepathy is like crack. Very addictive ...
Not much else is new. Hagen dropped is spear, which is nice. Those first few points of speed are essential. And my stealth is now heroic.
So, I'll hang about hoping for more stat potions. Still need chaos resistance before contemplating the cloning pits.

Out of boredom, I rushed into the Cloning Pits without resist chaos, figuring my stealth and 7 !oCuring would be enough. It went smoothly. An early Ring of Speed +4 enticed me to play without confusion resistance! But one of the Gachapins obliged with both Faramir and Soulsword, so that predicament was but temporary. I picked up Padre as well, which is great for pushing your level up in the town to get some stat rolls. I have the typical 18/70 base Con, so hp are a bit low.

I think it is time to pay the Dragon's Lair a long overdue visit.

The real Gachapin gave Kusanagi, so after swapping out my crappy elvenkind for Padre, I practice the art of dual wielding. Shortly thereafter, a hellwyrm dropped Crimson, and suddenly I am CL45. Androids can certainly level up quickly!

Wow! Feanor!! I totally was not expecting that :)
Still, I have the hp equivalent of a hobbit mage ... Where the heck is all the con? I finally managed Thorin, but since I'm still building dual wielding skill, that's on hold. Not even Isildur ... or Hammerhand? Weird.

Quick update after a quick equipment reshuffle. I lose 4 levels of experience, but gain 4 con and levitation. 866hp is somewhat acceptable. 778hp at CL49 was downright embarrassing for a warrior :)

Heading to the bottom of the lair. I finally found Isildur, which, along with Fingolfin and the Palantir, was one of the things I was waiting for. I still need to find the last two, but I'll stand a better chance a little bit deeper.

Significant changes include another battle with !oNewLife, which involved extensive town scumming to find. But now I have 18/130 Str, 18/70 Dex and 18/120 Con with a 102% life rating. The low dex is currently hurting as I only land 6 blows, but I'd rather have the 1168hp any day. I should go to something like 1250hp when CL50 at last I reach.

Other changes include Terror Mask and a couple of rand art weapons, both of which were bought at the BM. And yes, I play without telepathy, hoping the esp evil will be enough.

On the surprise note, I had been using dual activations from Feanor and Kiss of Saccubus [sic] to haste, double resist, and whack an endless stream of dragons. When I got Isildur, I figured I'd just have to give up my ready double resistance, but Lo! what does this cloak activate for if not double resistance? :)

Not much to add, just some reflections:

[1] Watch out for heavy curses. The only way I can remove them is with Sacred Knights. Since I'm completely out of luck if my amulet gets a big curse when I am not wearing Sacred Knights, I'm just going to wear it all the time. Its not that bad of an item ...

[2] Mutations: There's blink, panic hit and teleport, and possibly swap position that could really prove useful. I had them all from a Chaos Vortex ... but didn't get any of them until I had some killer bad mutations (-4 to all stats, -5 to speed, etc. etc.) Teleport came on the 56th mutation, but fumbling feet, the one I felt I had to remove, was the 55th mutation to go, leaving me just fading into and out of reality as wondering where my last 280,000gp went. Not to mention about an hour of play time ... I'm not sure I have the heart to try that again.

[3] I disagree a bit about which is worse, lack of destruction or lack of teleport. For my zerkers, its always lack of teleport that does them in. I'll play without destruction ... I think for the final battle the only risks are Cyberdemons and Morgy, and I'll definitely want to be able to teleport away from that! We'll see ...

[4] Bleys dropped the Jewel, but I currently need the palantir for telepathy. It makes a nice swap item, though ...

[5] The top of the mine is risky, but makes it easy to find uniques. Another 30 down, another 140 to go. Also, those teleporting guys, like Bleys and Cain and Habu and especially Y'golonac are easily dealt with here. Just need to bring my _oDestruction.

[6] Not sure how to handle charge drainers ...

Luigi was carrying Jack's Cloak ... on DL75 of the Mine. If I had know he had it all along, I would have made a point of killing him much sooner. I guess all of this pissed Jack off, as he showed up as my DL38 quest. Normally, that we would be flat out undoable, but I didn't even notice him ;)

So, I make an exception. With Jack's cloak, my dex was all the way down to 18/70, and that's factoring in all my racial, class, personality and equipment bonuses of ... +0!! Yikes. Down to 5 attacks. For a warrior, this obviously won't do. So I swapped in Silver Chariot (I feel like a ninja ... seriously, this would be an awesome kit of ninja weapons!). Bing! 6 attacks. Oh, what the heck. I'll wear Gogo and swap in Sacred Knights. Bing! Bing! 7 attacks. I mean, 9 attacks with the chariot :)

No levitation means its time to stay in Angband. Can I ever reach 50th level? Only time will tell ...

Here's a good stopping point, so one last character update. I ran the quests down thru DL76 without incident. But now, I am at the part of the game where charge drainers abound, and a total lack of teleport can quickly kill you. Scumming mutations *is* the right answer at this point.

So, I shuffled my equipment to get rid of that pesky chaos resistance, dropped off all my staves in town and headed to the top of the lair. Macro '\e<\e>\ez3' and stair climb until a spot a chaos vortex, which happened after about a minute! Yay! Plow thru a couple wyrms (my speed was down to a paltry +15 after the equipment shuffle), and its just me and the vortex.

But wait, doh! Before leaving angband, I quaffed a !oPolymorph and picked up that annoying recovering mutation. No matter, I figured it was easy enough to find this one, so I could do it again if I had to.

Swap, Blink and Panic Hit came up quickly. Then Teleport on like mutation 15!!!! So off to Zul, to attempt a cure (I should just play with the bad mutations, but I really don't want to go thru this process again). I lose the recovering mutation after losing some other good ones, most notable for this guy was being limber, as I have had a poor dex most of the game. And I'm down to what you see here and the horrible wasting disease. Now that's one I should just play with ... right? Well, I risked it and it was the first to go :)

So, 170 uniques down. All resistances save blindness, but who cares about that. Its not like I can read scrolls or anything. Very good melee damage and completely wonderful speed. I don't even need to use a ring of speed, I think. Which is good, since its been about 20 or so rings so far with the best being +7. I've been selling them for gold.

So, I just need a couple rings of power (!) and a bunch more *Healing*. Oh, and all the really tough deadly nightmarish instadeath scary uniques are still alive ... but I'll show them!

Bubble Vault on DL86 netted some nifties, including Fingolfin and a fine +12 ring of speed ... which is sitting in my house at the moment.

So here is my monster death pose! 1366 damage per round with a 70% accuracy against AC 175 (The Serpent's AC, btw). I'm giving up light resistance now, but I don't care ;)

One thing warriors do need is healing ... lots of healing. Every significant unique requires at least 2 !oHealing, and I think the Destroyer will require at least 20. I now know that the Destroyer is not my DL88 quest, so I'm guessing its the Unicorn (or perhaps Sauron). I'll just fail it if its the Unicorn.

Hmm I've used big vaults to fight quite a bit of late game uniques in the past... For berzerkers, that dig fast and have no tele, its essential, so I think this might be a valid tactic for warriors as well, of course, with its own weakness... safe but slow.

_ Earthquake + vaults also kick ass! <=- This i've used a lot :)

On 30.7.2009 01:26 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
I'm not sure why this guy dug so slow, but it often took 20-30 turns to dig out a tunnel. I usually play spectre warriors, so I never noticed before. And, for a spectre, fighting the Serpent inside a vault is a very good idea, since it really controls his summons. It just that you can't dodge when the ceiling collapses, so you get hit with those 200hp earthquake criticals a lot without passwall.

I agree about the earthquakes ... In fact, I call the strategy "Quake and Take" (tm). You quake until all the nasties are gone, leaving nothing but tasy artifacts which you are then free to take. I must confess that my unusual rooms 'zerkers sometimes resort to this approach :)

On 30.7.2009 01:32 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Oh, the reason I singled out the Serpent as a poor choice for fighting in a vault, is that as you fight him, he pummels you and fills in the path back to him with rubble. Each time you teleport out, you have to dig back in. If you only had to dig to him once, no big deal. The other thing is that if you left him next to any of his summons, he will pound on them while you are trying to get to him, pummeling you with earthquake criticals, so you have to drink healing as well while you slowly tunnel to the big J.

I almost gave up on it, it was such a disaster. But this guy was too powerful, and I realized my mistake lay in thinking I needed to teleport away in the first place!
