Without light that is. Went to dungeon level2 just to run into a 52 level ood dungeon feature, called deep mud. Killed several items and reduced my light to zero. It didn't help that clever me had combined the three starting torches into one.

So back to the surface it was. No torches sold, No latern sold, but hey cool some flasks. Considered going to Bree where they have REAL shops but decided to try finding some dungeon torches. Found one, and was able to go down to level 4 until it ran out. Back up again, and again no light sources sold in Hobbington. They had a xbow though, so I bought that instead.

With some more dungeon feature candles I found my way down to 5, where wormy, no wait the agent of nazgul fell in storm of bolts.

He dies and leaves an intresting +2 str 5d4 weapon, and I hope it stays 5d4 this time

Oh look I have the disease of no regain again. I'll try if I can get the cvs version to compile. If so I'll cure the disease there but will continue this character in the current beta version, because the new "chose stat level up" should change gameplay a lot... When Darfound should die, the next one will be using the new version then...

Rods don't stack. Might be intended... I'd prefer it if at least the lesser ones, like detect traps would stack

That didn't work. That disease is still uncureable in the current cvs.

YES!!!! I found a workaround for the disease problem. I codedived and noticed that curing one minor disease cures them all, so i went down to get another one. Found some disease jellies and got myself the hangover disease that is supposed to be treatable using fine ale.
Hangover also isn't cureable in the current version, however it did go away on its own after a short while, and took the regen disease with it.
Also found a Latern of Free action :)

Wow my first Un Artefact. For sure took a while.

Paurnen it is... Oh well.... But wait!!
After reading legend lore on it, it tells me I can inscribe it =A to automaticly activate on attack. It would then do 2*8d12 every 5+d5 turns, so that would be a nice double damage every 8 or so turns. But it doesn't seem to work yet :(

I'm now afflicted with dementia, that will be cureable using Mushrooms of Halucination in the final version. For now I'm stuck with getting amnesia from time to time. Have survived worse diseases :)

I've prepared myself for the next part that took Darfind out. Overprepared might describe it best.
But the round numbers look nice. I should have enough hp/potions to fight Smaug right now on top instead of searching him down there, but I want to follow the path of Darfind, so it is 18 levels of semi ironman next.

Got my revenge, Smaug fell with ease. If you know you have to survive 18 levels without town it for sure works a lot easiers compared to when it comes by surprise :) Being able to regenerate helped too.
Things already looked good, when some random unique on 37 dropped Taratol, probably the best weapon for the task.
Some of the mature D drop chests, and bags are considered chests. Guess I'll spent a little more time in the lonely mountain. Pitty you can't drop them into your home.

res Chaos doesn't work. You still get Hallucination. Bad if you're at dlvl60 :). You also get confused, but that might be because I was lacking res confu.

When Un generates potions or scrolls, it has a good chance to generate a whole stack of 5-10.
That seems true for all potions/scrolls. Found a stack of 7 *healing* that is now sitting at home. Also true for Acquirement. Found 5, one burned, took 4 to 60, found 4*crap.

Found another acq scroll, and got my wow *YES* item. Those randart boots are godly compared to the rest of my kit, offering several important resists. It's the first item to give res confu!! That was my last action yesterday before going to bed so I haven't reshuffeled equip yet.

I'm carrying a bag of the 4 winds. Had no idea what that can hold, but as my tele away wands went in i kept it. The result is that I am now carrying to different kind of attack wands that i likely never would have carried normaly, so compared to my food bag that only carries waybread the four winds is actually usefull somehow. I still want my first *usefull* bag though. Something to drop potions into perhaps

On 9.8.2006 20:36 Matthias wrote:
Ooookay. So I went to the top level of a certain tower to kill a certain mage. He teleported away and I couldn't find him, so I wanted to go down/up stairs to reset the top level. There was however a bug when I went down, as the game thought that stair was actually the quest stair.

I landed in a new region, so I pressed < to see where to travel. I was however standing on an upstairs and found myself in another tower with another well known mage. Had him down to one red star when he teleported away, again undetectable.

Didn't have healing to try again, so I left the dungeon. Found myself in yet another new town with a runestone shop among other things. The intro messag said that if I would kill some unique a new path would open with no way back. So I decided to take it slowly first checking the region.

There was a third tower dungeon in the city, but it started at level1, so I used recall to get to level55, possible because there is only one recall depth saved in current Unangband beta.
55 turned out to be as the top level of that new tower dungeon. I didn't want to fight the guardian yet, so, without really having understood what happened last time, used the down stairs.

Got hit by the same bug as before, the game thought I would have take the quest stairs.

So, now I am in a region with as it seems only a town without shops and two deep dungeons. Looks like this might find an end very soon.

I double checked all areas to make sure. Currenty available: Minas Morgul (53-83) and Morannan (50-75). Morannan's guardian seems to be the mouth of Sauron. I could kill him right now on the surface or up in the tower, but I'm not ready for him yet. Both dungeons are towers, so i could get to the next sector by using that bug, this time to help myself out of the situation the bug got me into.
There is a town, but it has no shops and no access to the homeplace. However, there are 4 storage places that were filled with some supplies, and I have a tiny little hope that they don't restock while I'm in that area what would allow me to drop supply there. Fear it will get removed though, so for now it only holds some test objects.

Also collected my third disease. *remove curse* is required to get rid of it. Narcolepsy is the worst of my three diseases. Lol I just realized something bad: I didn't read the style descriptions so I missed an important fact: Only warriors with specialities in weapon combat (shield / two handed/ sword/ polearm/ hafted)
get extra blows at higher levels.

So as a dragon slayer, I fear I am stuck at 5 blows forever. Imo a bad imbalance in the styles there. So I guess that means my end game weapon, should I get that far, will be a heavy 5blower instead of the usual mid-height weight 6 blower.

Note to self: Don't roleplay at character creation...

Ancient Ds are somewhat deeper in Un and are now symboled A. The higher levels in Shelob's tower had some of them. One dropped a themed chest of bags, one turning out to be hedge magic to hold my teleportation scrolls. 3 slots to one. Later another D tropped the bag of Philstres that currently only holds CCW and +status potions.
The last level then had a hard defended bag of the elements, so now I am at 9 bags!
I failed to get the bag of the black arts some levels earlier :(

I guess I could drop elements lesser runes and maps now that I am back in a town...

I'm back in the town that has that rune stone shop, and the new intro description sais last stop before Morgy.. Don't think I can take him anytime soon...

Climbed the tower in Minas Morgul. On dlvl 85 the witch king of Angmer waited as a guardian, and I fought him instead of using a bug. Good idea, as the epic battle he offered me was likely a good preview of things to come.

In Un monsters seem to be able to cast spells without LoS, they don't even have to be close to LoS like in Heng, they can cast spells whenever they want. So instead of just walking towards my anti summon position (can't call it ASC in a permawall tower), he kept summoning stuff on the other side of the level that kept swarming me.
Dragons, Undead, Demon. You name them he summoned them. In difference to Heng the summons are created on the caster, so he won't summon onto your head from the other side of the dungeon, so it's actually quite fair and realistic. Can't wait for Morgy to summon uniques while still screens away :)

The reward was worth it. No idea who dropped what but in the end I had the Arcanestone, and an amulet of ESP. First telepathy all game. Don't think I ever had telepathy THAT late. Back to town I was offered a new reward containing both the armor and the ESP xbow I am now wielding. With the +9 speed ring found earlier I am now able to reach +19 base speed -2 for too many bags.

One problem remains: I can't see where to continue. After Minas Morgul I got back to the rune shop town, that still tells me it is the last stop before Morgy, but no new roads are shown. One tower remains, the one with the Mouth, but I doubt that one will lead elsewhere. My guess is that there was supposed to be a path to Angband from my current town, but it's missing in the beta...

Some of the witch kings frieds also dropped a stack of 15 potions of experiece that got me from 39 to 43 really fast ;)

Found another important bag, of elixers, to hold potions of healing, *healing*, speed and resistance.

After clearing Morannan a new path to udun opened up for me. Dlvls 79 - 98 are waiting to be conconquered. I really hope it's not another tower.

Udun was guarded by Gothmog, no problems there. Next dungeon went all the way down to 99 and not really surprising, had Sauron as a guardian.

In the battle of me against several uniques + Saurun, the several uniques + Sauron had to find out that I was stronger than them. The next area had a lvl99 tower, but there was no guardian so I continued walking.

I found myself back in Hobbington. Poor city for sure changed. It has real shops now, but also level60 monsters running around, and the river turned into acid...

Without hesitating I continued to Anband. Still wonder why it said last stop before Morgy in Minas Tirith when there are two more cities in between.

Morgoth hasn't kill wall in Un. He might be bugged as he didn't cast any spell other than assume wrathform. Not that it would have changed the battle as I was well prepared for whatever he could have thrown at me. He kept clubbing me with grond. Without him wall-killing I had to stone to mud several times to continue the battle thanks to earthquake.

He fell and dropped nothing... Very well. I leveled from 48 to 49 killing him.

Looks like the adventure isn't over yet as I cannot retire yet. Maybe I have to kill the remaining guardians? From Angband one can walk backwards all the way to the Level50 dungeons of Rivendell, but do I want to do that?!?

Hey,

Really enjoyed reading all the updates. Looks like my messing with the quest code has prevented you being marked as a winner. Could you send me the save file and I'll mark it as a winner for you (it'll have to be tomorrow night)?

Congratulations again and thanks for all the bug reports.
