Having a lot of fun with Unangband. This is perhaps my fourth character, and most promising. Wearing a shield with a dual wielder is pretty lame, but dying to paralyzation would be too much to bear if I sold the shield. This go around has been much easier so far because I found a stack of 8 (+5 +5) daggers in farmer maggot's cellars. Going to clear the Marshlands and then tackle Weathertop again, where my last character died.

Gone from slow and taking everything in to bouncing around all over the map. Currently exploring the depths of Moria and I'm reminded of some old Rolemaster tabletop experiences, especially since I get a running narrative of what the dungeon looks like from every room I enter. I've been to the Temple of Elemental Evil. My brother has the original Greyhawk module I do believe. I have the Troika game with the circle of 8 mod, but everytime I try to finish I get bogged down around the time I actually get inside the temple. Ironically enough, the first monster I come across in Un is something that took me 30 swipes before I connected against some sor tof fairy. Perhaps I'll finally get to have fun with the old Temple of Elemental Evil in Unangband.

I had completely forgotten I had played an Un character a few years ago. I saw myself linked to Anklebiter and laughed... I have no recollection of that at all.

BTW, how did you manage to overcome Bombadil?

At the time I was wielding 2 daggers and I think I was getting 5 attacks a round... not sure. Anyway, I drank a potion of speed and got him down to one or two stars then he kept teleporting around so I kept following him, occasionallly using phase doors of my own to try and find him. He either ran out of mana or got tired of jumping around and let me take the last stars off. I cleared his house and looked for Goldberry but didn't find her. I felt bad enough killing old Tom so I didn't go back and look again for her. I killed a hobbit housewife and felt bad about that too, but then I remembered I'm an orc so I then decided to kill Beorn and all the rest of the good folk that I could.

Wanted to go back to Khazad-Dum but I shouldn't have takent that left turn at Albuquerque. I thought I had myself trapped in Moria because I got down to 30, but the down staircase that was there when I killed the dungeon guardian was gone. I WOR back to 21 Moria, where the rock crashes and there aren't any exits. I bounce back and forth a few times until I realize I can reach the edge at Moria 21 and simply fast-travel elsewhere. When I got free of Moria I decided to poke my head around Saruman's pad. If I live through this expedition I plan on heading back to Khazad-Dum.

About Bombadil: with Speed you'd indeed had a chance, but I'd say with ranged attacks, not with melee. I'm surprised he didn't confuse you or whatever mental attack he's doing via melee. Then you'd he quite helpless and he's packing a punch, too. Perhaps you are a lucky bastard and he missed his confusing attacks the first couple of rounds and then it was too late for him... And yes, he's run out of mana teleporting, apparently. And Goldberry, of course, was bathing at her pool at the time...

BTW, I've heard that Smaug laughs at your puny exploits and says you are afraid to confront him.

I'd rather be lucky than good any day of the week. I think I might have been hallucinating a lot during the fight. l X A r D W s E it doesn't much matter to me what shape he is.

Yes yes, so I've been told that ranged attacks are super awesome and that I'm stupid for not using them. I'd rather smash Tom with my Bagpipes. I bet it would make a cool sound.

I was going straight for Smaug but now there aren't any convenient towns. I figured I would take the Lonely Mountain all in one go later on when I have enough magic mapping to get straight to him... if Saruman doesn't thump me off Orthanc like a Tank in Left 4 Dead.

On 24.2.2009 18:23 Bandobras wrote:
He's not hiding from you in the Lonely Mountain any more. You shouldn't have flushed him out. Now he's looking for you in the the ruins of the Lake Town and only returns to the depths of the Mountain to rest. If you kill him, his hoard will be opened, but don't be greedy! Finish your other quests first, or you'll awake in a world different from the one you know and your goals will change, too.

On 25.2.2009 05:15 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Awesome, that makes things much easier. I guess I should still plumb the lonely mountain. I read the Hobbit, but assumed since Bard wouldn't kill him in my game that Smaug would just head back to Erebor. Silly me, thanks for the heads up. Anyway, he was easy to smote.

Wow, wig wig wig!! I got to the bottom of Erebor and had a look around. I figured it would be a smallish quest like room level but it was a typical Erebor level. I did a little moving around the map and came back and like, time shifted. Dale is now a town and I chose to fight the battle of 5 armies. Wow, nice special effects on the fire eating up the trees and grass and such. It was like watching Conway's life or something. Nice. I skirted the edges and killed a ton of orcs and eventually came across Bolg who turned out to be the guardian. I then get the option of going to the vaults in Erebor. Now this is where the good stuff is. When I get back to Dale though, I get this flyer explaining how to move my troops around. It didn't make much sense to me since the 5 armies battle was already over. Perhaps it will mean something later. I'm now in Khazad-Dum and I'm going to attempt to break on through to the end of it in one go. I'm enjoying the dual longswords, but I could probably switch out the lightning sword for one of those daggers of Arnor, but I just can't help the image of dual long swords. A dagger, even doing more damage, just wouldn't bring the same satisfaction. I've thrown exactly 2 times this entire game, but with a whole stack of nice daggers it might be tempting. I give myself a 5 percent change of doing it. They sell for a *ton* of money.

Fun fight with Durin's Bane! I found him on a rather large level surrounded by all sorts of greater demons. I dug a zig zaggy corridor all the way up the room he was in and prepared. I read 2 scrolls of holy prayer, quaffed 2 potions of heroism, read my one scroll of mass banishment I had come across to delete all the other U's, quaffed 4 cure serious wounds because I forgot about the damage that entails, dug the remaining rock out, moved back, drank a potion of speed and my last potion of resistance while he got 2 attack rounds on me to sort of gauge his damage output. He wasn't doing much damage to me, but I couldn't really scratch him either. Maybe 9 or 10 attack rounds go by and I hadn't taken a star off yet, but I had lost most of my hitpoints. I drank my only potion of major healing and decide to give it some more umph by hitting the keys really hard. I got a whole star off! As my hitpoints dwindled again I got another star off and decided this wasn't going so well. I scanned the terrain and found a :, a pile of rubble to stand on. I retreat to the rubble pile, climb it, and find suddenly I'm hitting more often. I can only assume it was a height advantage, or just coincidence, but suddenly the stars starting falling off much faster. He dropped an interesting helm but that was about it. The real reward was in Lothlorien. Wow, now Hurin's axe is a real piece of work. I'm going to hug it and snuggy it and dream all night long about all the monsters I'm going to kill with it. Not sure where I'm going to go next, but I just got a message telling me there are ringwraiths at the top of Weathertop and at the Ford to Rivendell now.

Oh yeah, I jumped from level 31 to level 34 once I felled Durin's bane. With a kit change I went from roughly 520 hitpoints to my nearly 900. If I could get a convenient source of blindness resist I could get nearly 1100 with my artifact cap that Durin's Bane dropped. I need some nice gloves that cover free action so I can ditch that silly free action ring.

Ooops. A bug. Fortunately it can be viewed on one of the ~ screens, when you get involved in another grand battle in your future.

I don't know myself, that game is so complex. Another way to get more damage it to charge (if you have a heavy weapon and big Size stat) or to phase door, block (5 key) preparing for the attack and hit him when he approaches.

Ah, I should have been more specific. I couldn't reach him. I've come across some monster that I guess were either too tall, or I'm too short as an Orc,... same difference, or that maybe my weapon length was too short. Or all. I dunno. I typically don't read the messages that flash while I'm fighting so I couldn't specifically say my hit rate was in that fight before I got into the rubble, but I would say maybe I was connecting 1 out of 10 swings. I'm thinking height advantage... I've noticed it when fighting other monster that were tall too. One of these days I'm going to read some documentation.

Yes, you are right! There are huge monsters that you have to charge into or you have to fight from a higher place to reach them (there are many more such places, besides rubble, you have the message that you climb on them, when you walk over them). Huh, you've discovered it for yourself without manuals. Wow, that works!

Had a real knock down drag out fight with Wormtongue. It could've gone either way easily... I had about 300 hitpoints and no healing left, and he had barely 2 stars. I got whittled down to 130 and he started to run away. I track him down and killed him. I just tried Saruman and I'm no match. I didn't think I would be since I could barely take Wormtongue. I guess I'll come back later. On a lamer note I shamelessly rebought the potion store over and over again to get a good stockpile of ccw and a few cure mortal wounds. I also couldn't resist the temptation to stair scum Orthanc a fair bit. I'm sure I'll get mine soon enough.

I see Hallucination is learning the art of Unangband melee. Not to the point of carrying a blunt swap weapon though...

Oh noes!! I need a blunt weapon. I noticed things glancing off while I was in Maggot's cellar (which is more like Wilbur Whately's cellar for H.P. Lovecraft... some really creepy stuff going on in there!) but didn't experiment. I have a flametonge morningstar in one of the vaults, I guess I'll go grab it when I'm in the area again. Thanks for the heads-up!

Wow, had another really close battle, this time with Saruman. I got knocked down to the 100's several times and gambled with phase and teleport and my luck prevailed. It took a lot of speed potions since he kept stripping me of my enchantments, and mowing through his summons over and over. I would knock off maybe a star or two while he wailed away with all his magic then he would teleport and get his mana reserves up again. So, I would take this time to drink up heroism and ccw, having no major heal, and then bounce with phase door to start over again. It took quite a while but it was very tense and exciting, like my battles with Morgoth have been in the past. So far, the "boss battles" have all been fairly epic. I'm now in Minas Tirith. I need to keep an eye out for a large die non enchanted throwing weapon so I can enchant it with a vampires kiss. I've got a rune shop now, I guess it's time to start experimenting.. please... no help! I'd like to bungle around in the dark with it.

On a silly note, I can't get the lotr cartoon out of my head. You know... the one with Navajo Aragorn and Viking Boromir, the strangely animated affair from the 70's. Those are my next characters at this variant when Orcly finally drops... it can't be long at the rate I keep pushing my luck.

Ah, my luck finally ran out! I really thought I was going to pull that through, too! I went to the Land of the Dead, but couldn't get back out... or at least I couldn't figure a way out. I suppose I should've stair scummed long enough to get healing so I could take out the dungeon guardian up top, but after about half an hour of straight scumming with nothing to show for it I decide to just give up. I managed to get whatsisface to a one on fight, and thought I was going to win it, too... but right as he got to about 2 stars he threw something nasty at me while I had perhaps 300 hit points or so. Oh well. Now that I have a better idea of whats going on I hopefully won't get stuck in a map trap.

You've been warned before you entered the map trap! So much for real men not even reading in-game help tips and warnings. :)

Anyway, sorry about your hero --- that was a very nice piece of heroic epic.

Aw, thanks.

Read stuff??! I'm doing good to read the room descriptions. I might break down and read some stuff soon if I keep dying. Navajo Aragorn and Viking Boromir are already dead. I'm going to make a Stone Troll next methinks.

I take it we need to increase the frequency of healing items.

I came across 2 cure-all-wound potions on a very early paths of the dead level before I started hitting the stairs, and that's very fair. I only travelled within maybe 5 steps of the stairs so they could've been littering the levels for all I know.

I love all the auto-pseudo-id. I would've really loved auto-pseudo-id before, but since I've been playing a lot of nethack recently I really really love the pseudo id. Simply one step closer to having everything drop as identified, which is something I would like. Not necessarily for UN, but in general.

I also didn't see many hounds. Big thumbs up.

So, of the 3 things I would toss from Band in general, food, identify and hounds... only food remains. I found myself obsessing over food, having a character die to starvation because I didn't notice he was weak. At least food isn't arbitrary like it is in most of the other bands I've played... throwing up food from disease and wasting diseases and other things I've encountered makes food more interesting.

I'm still having fun with Un, it's super great... I just need to get a good character going again... My time is super limited lately.
