my first unangband winner. my other warrior lower in the ladder is long since dead, this is his successor. I did probably 90% of this character this friday/saturday, so no dumps and running commentary as he was growing, sorry. :P

found hurin relatively early -- and it's an awesome weapon. I think it got nerfed in V3.0.0 or V3.0.1. identifying items was a COMPLETE pain in the ass, and my main objection to unangband. identify was too rare in shops, and *identify* was too rare everywhere. there's some weird pval stacking bug that would take rings (of speed) and average their values. I had a stack of 10 rings of speed (+10) and 30 rings of speed (+9) at one point :). also a few crash bugs still exist, and sometimes when clearing demon pits a monster would become invisible, and I'd have to reload the game to be able to see it.

pretty cool variant in general. I really like the runes system, and the variety of dragons. I got a randart shield with im_fire somewhere around 3000', so I had lots of fun clearing demon pits and fighting dragons after that. before I got my amazing randart body armor, I used brass DSM (r_disen, acid) for the r_disen, and arrow runes for r_conf. wore a ring of r_pois for most of the game, and colannon for r_nexus, as well. I didn't really have any +speed until around 3700', at which point it become common fairly fast. found speed rings, boots, cubragol ... all in a short period of time. at which point I pretty much knew this character was going to win -- plenty of speed, great weapon, decent armors.

morgoth was the only unique to give me trouble (past 3000'). but even with him, it was just a matter of time, because I had stockpiled potions. I used a couple mass geno scrolls on him, and a few uses of healing staves (which I left on ground to not get drained .. lost them eventually). also used 4 *healing*, ~5 cure all wounds, ~4 *cure all wounds* and a couple life potions. I didnt really need to use the life, but I was just mixing things up .. *healing*, *CAW* and life are all about the same when fighting morgoth since I had str/dex/con sustained (the shield of preservation was swap for morgoth, all other times I used the im_fire randart). I used up the last of my regular old healing potions vs sauron, they aren't worth much vs morgoth anyway. I scummed tbe black market relentlessly for potions and *identify* -- no real choice, as a warrior.

the fighting style system was kinda neat. as a weapon + shield user, I got 11 blows with hurin. hehe. never saw a Power DSM or Great Wyrm of Power --- not sure if they're even in game... have to check.. killed and saw everything else though. oh note that I did NOT play in campaign mode .. I like the old-style dungeons.

this is an unangband 0.5.3 character .. the dump is bugged. whole game was 0.5.3. also , that little harp of might got a ton of use before cubragol .. s+str/dex/con and telepathy, perfect for me..

oh, want to add:

I really like the fact that breaths / elemental balls / flame auras / steam+lava vents / etc interact with the ground and environment, changing the dungeon. very cool feature. only objection - when groups of monsters were affected by it, such as demon pits with fire demons, the game would be unplayable due to all the monster damage messages -- I had to use the auto_more (or whatever it is to make messages go away) option, and be very very careful not to do something silly and die, since you don't receive attack messages in that mode.

Congratulations on the win, and thanks for the useful comments. I'll just address a couple of points here and leave the rest of discussion for the news group:

1. I'll make identify and *identify* more common (Again)... tuning still in progress. Its interesting to see that you are using the intended method for identifying stuff: selling it and then buying it back :)

2. The weird pval stacking bug is not a bug, its a feature. You have force pval stacking turned on... this will merge all pvals (Including ring stat/speed modifiers).

3. The monster invisibility bug is known, but I'm a little annoyed there are still crasher bugs.

4. The bug with character dump versioning isn't my fault ;)

5. I'll have to think of a smart way of limiting monster pain messages... or add an option.
