Here we go again. Ranger this time. Updated to the current cvs version. Main difference are the stat upgrades at level up that are no longer random. Unangband doesn't have normal status potions so this helps a lot. The result is this intresting early dump. With 18/60+ in all three fighting stats at level10, Darsleep makes his warrior ancestors proud. +6 str in equipment from a random drop and the agent of nazgul round up the monster domination at the current depth.
Mustn't. Get. Overconfident.

Hey Matthias. How do you actually download the CVS off of Berlois? I can't figure it out from the menus, only how to view "diffs" and such.

Hey Adam. The short answer is you need to install a cvs client e.g. WinCVS. Drop me an email and I'll send you a screen dump of the settings I use in WinCVS.

Hi Mat. Any reason you've decided to take the same route as last time? There's an early quest reward location you miss out on going this way. Of course, you don't have to deal with a lot of nasty OOD quest monsters as well.

I wanted to go the other way, but somewhere lost the path. I think I went the wrong way after killing the agent...

I'm checking out of the cvs using the eclipse java ide. Very likely overkill, but I have it installed anyways and it does what it it supposed to do. Will switch to latest beta now.

Oh and on an earlier attempt I did use the other way. After old man willow I confronted that demon, had him down to 1 red, then he teleport leveled me. Then I died :) Will get my revenge later I guess.

Preparing for the battle against the wood elven king in mirkwood. I have a tough decission between three laterns. The first one was sold some time ago: +4 str. A short time later this insane +16 stealth latern appeared. And now the shop offered of Telepathy. Will likely take the last one, even so legendary stealth would be nice to have in the lonely mountain

Looks like I can have both :) The elven king dies and drops a ring of Speed. only +2. He also drops the Artifact weapon Aeglis so I can't complain. In laketown, the black market offers boots of telepathy for 13k.

Finished Weathertop. Accidently used the teleportation bug in my advance when I teleported the guardian away. When he had finished his walk over the chasms, he was almost dead.

Hmm i still haven't learned to be carefull with travelling i guess. Used a map to go to lonely mountain as I hoped for the reward. There was none going that way though. Instead of going back as planned, I decided to check out the battle of the 5 armies, where my last character couldn't find a guardian to open the next path.

This time the orc showed up, and I went to the next region "just to check". Of course it was a one way ticket... I skipped the area as it had no town, and after some more travels I found rest in the town of Edoras. Currently available are two tower dungeons.

On the good side I found a RoS +7 some times earlier. Also my bow damage is back to normal for some strange reason.

Progress has kind of come to a hold at the moment.
I guess I could throw a dice and kill one of the two guardians that both seem to be more or less the same. Not sure why I haven't done so. While training on the top level of the tower I was able to improve my build a bit. Thorin enabled me to put the damage ring is back in, and I've gauged all damage and slaying rings since then.
Best till now is an impressive +19 damage ring.

I've runed my Amulet with 2 cloud runes and it should give res poison now if I understand runes correctly. Need a *id* scroll to confirm that.

Just seconds ago I found a really nice randart cloak with 5 cons str and speed as well as some resists, so I guess this is the sign to attack one of the guardians.

I also used the new "brand items that are runed" to add brand cold to my fury weapon, that is used as a ghost killer.

Endgame weapon on choice would be MoD of Fury +2 branded with something nice, maybe acid or even vampirism....

First battle with Wormy ended in a disaster. He blasted/ i used 8 of my healing potions and I never got him below half hp. However, the battle started intresting. A light hound was standing behind wormy and breathed light on me. Wormy got blinded, and couldn't cast spells for a while. In the battle I tried to reblind him using wands of blindness but it didn't work.

So I went to another area where I knew were a lot of zombies who love to drop wands and got myself some wand and rods of light as well as some other damaging devices. Works really really well :) :)

Have to leave until monday, so wormy is still alive. For now.

I ended killing both Wormy and Sarumon who both dropped nothing of value. Used the same tactic for both, and it will very likely work for a lot of other casters as well. Now it looks like all I need is a usefull bow.

I can now go to Minas Tirith directly, or use the path of the dead, that will lead there too. Guess I'll use option2, as I didn't go there with Darfound.

Leveled to 35 and have now access to the identify spell for 20 mana.

Hmm... I like this tactic, but its a bit too exploitable.

I'll have to make some casters capable of resisting blindness (I've got some candidates in mind).

Might also have to start allowing monsters to carry / use potions. Either that or put in a hack for monsters with the heal/cure spell to pull out a potion instead to fix themselves.

BTW: Have you figured out what wands of Heal Monster and Haste Monster are effective against yet?

Nope I haven't... Will have to experiment a bit with those, thanks for the hint :)

I don't see why dungeons like path of the death exist. Why isn't there a way back to it? I left after reaching dlvl8 because I was filled up with items. Is it supposed to be a bonus dungeon that you have one recall to make the best of, before continuing the adventure...

The amount of Artifacts found has doubled since I am able to use id. Maybe I missed some earlier, even so I think I've understood the ranger pseudo good enough to prevent that...

They are essentially mini-iron man sections. Some are compulsory (Lonely Mountain - although you can go back there later, Moria will be soon as well), some are optional (Paths of the Dead).

Its designed to break up the game play somewhat.

Went the way using pellanor field. Witchking didn't summon at this instance and fell to my newly acquired ghostslayer. Fury +2, +27dam, more or less the same weapon that Darfound used to kill Morgy.
Still haven't found a useful bow and am only ranged as a a backup... Warrior with casting abilities :)

I've always wondered why rangers get such a good spell selection. I feel they really should only get as good as rogues, and another class (Warrior Mage) should get the spell/melee combo but be terrible with bows.

Talking about spells, I seem to have a great amount of different attack spells available, but I can't be bothered to learn them. Next character will likely be a mage to test the offence capabilities of your spellchanges, but for now i'm only using buffing and detection spells just like a vanilla ranger would.

Killed the Mouth of Sauron and reached the demon plains of udun.

The very first demon dropped a normal balance DSM, and I applied 5 elven runes to it in hope to make it a Quendi Armor (elvenkind in (v)). The Armor didn't change, maybe for balance reasons.

Just detected my first Un greater vault. It is #27 false walls.

Found the Palantir of Westernesse... I sooo want it to be the Hengband version without Aggravation!

@Andrew: With monsters casting from out of sight and moving clever, aggravation is suicide, so from the 4 artifact lights, only one (the arcanestone) can compare with magic laterns.

Oh look more Darsleep.
Upgraded my speedring to +9 thanks to a night reaver. There are a lot of new nasties deep down in Un that are rare enough that you don't see them every game...

After having ided every uncursed and unusual object for 7clvls a thought I had understood the pseudo system of a high elven ranger... Until I ided a cursed helm: steel helm of charisma [5-17] (+33). Looks like AC minuses count first when the game has to decide if a item is cursed or not... Now I'm searching for a +20 speed cursed cloak :)

Level 41 allowed me to learn the 35 mana spell "wall of stone". It creates a beam of walls in the direction of choice. The ideal spell to block LOS, to create ASC, and the best way to work against the mass chain summoning demons of udun. It is said to do 50 damage to monsters in it's path, but it has the earthquake effect, so monsters are likely caught in rock. To make it perfect: If it is casted on items, the items do not get destroyed and can be collecting after killing the wall on them.

Found my first items to give res water and res disease. You can get those by branding a weapon with vampirism. The weapon then gets one of several possible effects, including resists or vulnarabily to disease/water/light

Oh look, no more Darsleep. I killed Gothmog and was about to leave for Sauron's dungeon, but 15-headed hydra (that's a unique in Un) was sitting near the stairs and I decided to take her out.

450 hp... just one more attack... double moved at +30 speed: breath plasma and plasma bolt... damn..

statistics: me vs. 15 headed hydra: 1:1

Kind of sucks that I never found a bow... Won't go back to ranger until the quiver is implemented and some more monsters are able to drop ranged weapons...

Too bad...That's the problem (and I guess also what's interesting) with unangband - you frequently encounter monsters that can insta-kill you. I had the same thing happen with my last two mages - one was killed by a boulder from carahdras and one by a nether storm by khamul.
What's your next character going to be?

On 2.9.2006 02:30 Matthias wrote:
Next time I'm going spelltesting as promised, a mage it will be.

But there is no doubt that this death was my fault, and not Unangband difficulty. I was trying to safe potions too much. Imo almost every death of a character with >600 hp is player's fault alone
