I had to slay the man in tights, but I got a rand art armour for my troubles. +4 Str and Chr and Stealth are obvious, but I wonder what else it might do? And I thought that spear was Destiny for a moment ...

I let the Undead Masses get going a bit, and it wasn't until my pulverise turned into a ball spell at CL21 that I could control the population. Had to kill 359 of 'em, but I wanted the xp anyway.

DL12 quest brought a Cloak of the Bat, which I *will* sell! And I found out the hard way that 'Q' can eat corpses, even if they are wanted. So no ?Artifact Creation for me ... I failed on the first wanted monster :-P

I'm off to the Orc quest ...

Guess a unique corpse warrants an immediate recall! But it serves my right after my last character got not 1 but 3 ?oArtifact Creation.

Mindcrafters seem a bit more powerful then I remembered ... perhaps it is later in the game when things will slow down? Right now, I'm kicking some monster butt!

Drew Grendel for my DL24 quest and he dropped Eorlingas and Glamdring. He also dropped an excellent hard leather cap that was not Thranduil. That's OK ... I get Telepathy eventually anyway (I have it now in spell form).

I think I'll head down to stat potion depth, though that does not really mean I am actually likely to find any stat potions, as they are so rare in Hengband ...

Killing 4000 hp dragons with a 65damage pulverise is demanding work ... but it is possible! Since I am not fighting at the moment, I might as well dual wield. Plus when my stats are finally appropriate, I do have a nice weapon waiting for me, courtesy of Gachapin (He is always best killed in the lair).

But the Glaive will due in a pinch. 5 attacks and decent equip should yield 400-500 pts of damage a round. Perfect for hacking up stunned opponents!

I can't fail this quest 3 times in a row, can I? Can I? Well, Utgard-Loke was hanging out next to my favorite starting position by the Bokrugs. He summoned several lesser titans, a greated titan, Kuoko. A Monastic Lich got into the fray as well. Glad I brought some Teleport Other with me. I sold out for Utgard using 2 healing. Mopped up all but the Greater Titan, who will probably prove to be pretty tough. We'll see ...

One of the Its dropped Hammerhand netting me 2 additional attacks and whole lot of hp.

Pulled it off ... but it was by no means a smooth undertaking. Gone are the days when Gachapins, Its and Dagons were the toughest monsters about. Now its Cyberdemons, Dworkin, Jack of Shadows, Zhar, Utgard, Yibb and crowd that keep showing up. What's a poor little hobbit to do?

Well, not all at once, mind you. The above list was a compilation of my worst Cloning Pits experiences ever. This last run was just Utgard and his summons, which included a Greater Titan and several Lesser Titans as well as Kuoko. The run before had Dworkin and Zhar. When Dworkin died, he blood cursed me and summoned a Cyberdemon. No way I was ever going to kill that! I once had Jack of Shadows and Yib. Failed that one as well. I can also recall getting Fundin once, who is not so bad, accept that he is always awake and happy to fill up the quest with summons. Failed that time too. But this time I did OK, thanks largely to Hammerhand showing up when it did. Suddenly I could melee for about 350 damage a round. Utgard was tough, but the Greater Titan was a pushover, making me think I can do the Old Castle now if I want to. We'll see ...

And Itangast and an AMHD is a pretty tough draw as well!

Nice work. I found Mindcrafters to be quite powerful. Their spells are adequate offense in the early going and in the late game they get 5 blows/round and probably have the best buffing spells in the game. The well regarded 3rd Craft book wishes it had buffing spells as good as Mindcraft gives. Plus, psychospear punches through invulnerability. Take that, Combat-Echizen!

On 10.10.2005 21:45 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
Am I missing some of the power of this class? Well, I think they are good but not overwhelming as far as power goes. Here is what I am using:
[1] Buff. This is Adrenaline Channeling and Character Armour. 2 spells that are really the equivalent of 4 craft spells ... but Craft has 'em and walk through wall, probably the most powerful spell in the game!
[2] Pulverise. My previous goes at mindcrafters really underutilized this spell. It is quite frankly, awesome :-) Monsters are stunned, teleported away and slightly damaged. I find it useful to hack up greater wyrms while they are stunned, and don't seem to hurt me much. If I notice that my hp are going down too fast in the battle, then it is time for another pulverise or two.

I use other spells like detection (which is now enlightenment btw ... again, very awesome) and displacement in their obvious manner. But Mindcrafters used to have dimension door ... sorry to see that go!

Psychic Drain is seldom used because of the increased energy costs. Pyscho Spear has weak damage (< 200hp on average at the moment) and high cost. I guess it will be good for invulnerable folk. And The World? I just don't get it ... Was this added just for the babble in the arena? Mind Wave is OK, but I tend not to put myself into situations were many monsters are in line of sight. And with Amber[10] stealth, I really don't want to wake up more monsters than I am currently fighting.

But like I said, with all those caveats, I do find this character powerful. I am short on healing, but if I can get that covered then I should be good to go. Glaaki just fell with scarcely a fight and I zapped my rod of healing after the battle just to feel out the fail rate (I was down to 500hp).

GWoMany Colors. An easy kill. Hell Wyrms and under make tasty morsels. So Gaffer is doing quite well.

Oh, we are CL45 and DL69 in the lair ...

Any advice on how to put The World to better use would be welcome. I'll wait till I have a Staff of the Magi to see if I can't do anything with it ;-)

Gaffer entered DL98 with over 150 uniques remaining to kill. He is now down to 120. Some big ones have gone, such as Azathoth and Gothmog. But the next highest is Ymir, so there are a good 20-30 uber uniques remaining that put the fear of god into me. At the moment, I am tooling up for the Destroyer. 150 psycho spears to do him in, but I figure a fair amount of healing will also be required. I'm shooting for 10 staves of healing. I now have 5 and can quest for an additional one, so that is really just 4 more.

Once the Destroyer is down, I will risk some of the nastier uniques that I have been avoiding (Shuma Gorath, Combat Echizen, Azriel, etc.)

First go at the Destroyer was a no go. 16 healing got me 3 stars. I did not think I had enough. So I need to figure on atleast 50 healing to do the job. Guess maybe 12 staves of healing might be enough. But this just goes to show how weak Mindcrafters actually are ... At least a mage would have a Mana Storm (500 damage vs. my 200 damage).

My melee is also about 240 hp a round given my 55% hit rate against the Destroyer's 200 AC.

I'm thinking Runes of Protection might work better for me. I could kill the g from a distance with Psycho Spears but that would require 15 !oRestore Mana (which I have, btw, and could spare). But I really don't want to commit those types of resources. So maybe 10 ?oRune of Protection (I have 8 at the moment) and 2 !oInvulnerability (for backup use) along with my 8 _Healing (32 total charges) and 3 Rods of Healing will be enough?

I'll give it a go tonight ... Oh, and I've worked my skill up with Katanas so I should be able to hit better this time around.

Gaffer's got a bone. I guess one good thing coming out of my diminished capacity is that I am accumulating lots of good stuff. With decent stealth (up till now Amber[15]) I've managed not one, not two, but three ?oArtifact Creation. First Elven Cloak +4 gained Dex and RChaos, named Foci. Next Elven Cloak +4 gained Fire Immunity, named Hellfire. Last, I decided to go with my Diamond Edge and gained Flesh Wound, which is pretty darn good!

I think I am about ready for the Destroyer ... just need to go from Unskilled to !Skilled in my Diamond Edge.

What a can of whoopa$$.

My ninja beat the Destroyer with 1 charge from a staff of healing. Kind of gives you an idea of the power differential ;-)

Oh, and the ?oRune of Protection was meaningless. Never had a rune last more than 2 or 3 attacks.

Can't imagine if I didn't reflect ... probably you would need to double those resource requirements.

Oberon is down. He easily could have killed me, with his wanton double moves (all it takes is a double Mana Storm and any non-berserker is probably just dead). For me, a ManaStorm/Plasma bolt nearly did me in on his first move! Man! Talk about setting the tone for the battle. But things quieted down a bit after that. At one point he says, "Take that you sissy!" and hurls another Mana Storm. Wham! I'm down to 150hp.

But in the end, Flesh Wound was too much for the final guardian. He dropped to Golden Crown of Amber as well!

69 uniques to go, and I better kill as many evil ones as possible before going at the Serpent. I have plenty of Healing/*Healing*/Life and it is quite easy to get more. So it is just a matter of slashing thru uniques at this point.

Come, on. Where is Deathwreaker?? ;-)

I did make a go at the Serpent earlier today, when 60 uniques remained. My plan was to stop time, bang on the Serpent for 4 moves, phase door, restore mana and repeat.

I did not work well. Too much summoning and Disintegration and LoS abuse by the Serpent to make the strategy work.

And The World is 4 acts, but in reality, only 3 of these are free (as monsters respond first after the 4th ... perhaps your energy is set to 0?) So 3 free moves for all your mana. But wait, the spell only succeeds 86% of the time, so really, this is just 3*.86 = 2.58 free moves for something like 400 sp. Or, factoring the damage I do in melee, something like 700 damage for 400sp. This is poor! But I think I already complained about this ...

*WINNER*

51 !oHealing. Perhaps 10!o*Healing*. Close to 25 ?o*Destruction* (This is always the limiting factor, isn't it?)

In the end, I kept my base speed high so that I could continue to fight through the inevitable Dispel Magics. With only 900hp, the battle was close on several occasions, once I was down to 70hp!! Morgoth and Cthulhu made half a dozen guest appearances each, and the battle was long (maybe 10-20 melee rounds per star, and perhaps 3-4 turns total for every turn of melee ... I'm guessing 500 rounds in total?). A lot of blinking and healing. And a lot of regeneration on the Serpents part (maybe 10,000 hp worth? I'm guessing he gets back at least 20hp per round).

I think choosing a hobbit for this character might have been a mistake. In the end, my hp were a tad low for a melee character and I really could have used extra strength for damage output.

A very tough character race/class combo to win with ... probably one of my most difficult victories ever!
