OK, Hobbit ranger it is. Very early post ... I was puzzled which stat to pick at CL10, as both STR and DEX were at 18 (before bonuses). Decided on STR and I guess I chose correct as my attacks went from 2 to 4.
I love hobbits! They go up levels so easily :-)
On 1.9.2005 01:47 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL12 : DL8)
Hmmm... Warg quest had a chest on it, which had a Bo Staff in it. Hundreds of turns later, my pseudo-id kicks in, and I discover the Bo Staff is Excellent. When worn, I discover +1 STR/DEX/CON.
Pattern Weapon! Sweet!
On 1.9.2005 04:52 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL25 : DL20)
Just got a Long Bow in the Black Market. I wasn't really missing my missle attack before this however, as my melee damage is pretty good. I'll wait around DL20 for some resistance ...
On 1.9.2005 06:16 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL27 : DL24)
I got the Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner for my DL24 quest. Very doable, even without my Staff of Speed. The reward? Thranduil and Taratol. Nice. Not the best random resistance on Thranduil but almost any resistance will benefit a hobbit :-)
I also found Sumo Wrestler's Loincloth a while back. This is a nice armour unless you need resistance (I do) and have some other armor of resistance (I don't).
On 1.9.2005 06:35 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: On a bad note, I already messed up the Arena. I was blindly entering without thinking to get the Scroll of Acquirement, when I ran smack into the Basilisk. Without Resist Poison, it simply breathed twice and killed me. And here Nature was probably my best shot at killing the babble ... sigh.
On 1.9.2005 06:46 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL28 : DL30)
Finally broke a streak of WIS raises with a DEX. Hmmm, should I go for DEX or CON at CL30? I think if I choose DEX, I still won't get the 5th attack ...
At any rate, I'll be hanging out on DL30-32 for a while with the scummer on. Current level has a troll pit with a bunch of Aklashes in it. And I just got my Basilisk revenge. Funny, in the dungeon, it was no match for me ... (Stealth + Haste which are both unavailable in the Arena). Well, maybe someday I will truly win Hengband. In the meantime, I will content myself with simply trying to win Hengband ;-)
On 1.9.2005 07:48 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Hi Reaver,
How's Jedi coming along? ^^
Sorry to hear about the Arena fail. Usually if that happens, I suicide the character and restart... Taratol and Thranduril are nice, but nothing so exceptional that you won't find a second time around.
Also, you don't "need" resistance! Rei Hino didn't have RBase until Angband 49! Nature's one of the best classes for Power-diving while ignoring resists, thanks to its Resist Elements Spell. Just watch out for Water Hounds..
On 1.9.2005 09:52 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: And AARGH!!! 4 Staves of Speed AGAIN? Though, I guess my BM luck this time around has been pretty good too ^^
On 1.9.2005 14:44 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: What exactly does the sumo wrestler's loincloth activate for?
On 1.9.2005 15:06 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: The loincloth activates for some sort of Dispel Evil (power unknown) and Heroism. Its pretty useful.
You know, I've never considered the Arena central to the game. Most of my winners simply did the Arena enough for a Scroll of Acquirement. However, with True Winners on the ladder, I was going to start to pay more attention to the Arena, but I guess that will have to wait for next time.
On 1.9.2005 16:39 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL30 : DL30)
I've seen quite a few sources of resistance to this point (at least 5). I settled on this Poison/Disenchantment resistance as the best so far, even though my AC is pretty poor. Also, I had a scary moment when I forgot to keep an eye on my Free Action, as I was relying on Sumo Wrestler for that. But no monsters were about, so I quickly recalled and when back to wielding a Pattern Weapon. Now that I have FA gauntlets, its back to Taratol.
I've had some shaky moments at this depth, despite my abundance of speed. Surely I would have died without any sort of haste ...
And as predicted, a DEX boost at CL30 was not enough to break the 18/100 barrier. However, a potion of CON sealed my decision, as I felt like DEX needed to play catch up.
Hmmm, perhaps I should move to the Castle in search of Ishikawa? I think Zantetsuken would yield 5 attacks ...
On 1.9.2005 17:32 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: At what point did you take out the Minotaur? Is he an early stop along the way for you?

Still, Great Bile Wyrms and Great Ice Wyrms were difficult, and the weak dragon uniques (Smaug, Itangast, Scatha) were life threatening (My hp were around 330!). But I figured if Dave can die, then so can I ;-)
Numerous close calls, but here is the result of a bit of careful battle choosing. I think now, I might go for the Cloning Pits, and then play a bit more cautiously.
Oh, and Ishikawa was killed long ago using Wilderness tactics, but no super katana. Serves me right :-)
Dave, I think I will continue playing until the Old Castle. I know you are super quick, and I keep expecting your CL40 post to pop up on the ladder, which is the only reason I am pushing so hard ;-)

Cloning Pits was tougher than expected (Nightwing, Chaugnar, Baron of Hell, Shoggoth, etc.) especially given that my stealth was Chaos Rank at the time. Nothing of note (Rohirrim, Isildur). But I love dem boots :-)
And back to the Dragon's Lair I go, when what does the first Great Wyrm I see drop, but freakin' Ulmo!! Wow, that tiny little 7lb trident is 12d8 vs. dragons! Very sweet! Very nice :-)

On 2.9.2005 22:00 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Actually, I've taken down two GWoLaws pretty easily and safely using arrows. Because of the fractional time method of shooting, it's very very very unlikely for them to double-move you. A bit of back-of-envelope math:
Your speed: +11+10 = +21 = 31 energy per turn.
Their speed: +10 = 20 energy per turn
You get 3.72 shots per round, so each shot takes 26.88 average energy with std dev 8.33 energy. For you to be double-moved on, you need to take longer than 31 (p = 0.3), and they need to less than 21, (p = 0.005), so the total probability is about 0.15% of a double-move that those speeds.

The Wendigo left me something nice. But, I must confess, I am enormously disappointed with the Spell Fail rate on Herbal Healing. It requires CL50, INT 18/*** and [Master] to get 5% failure. The hard part is the 18/*** INT, which requires alot of sacrifices (+7 speed currently, and that is just for 18/210). Most characters would have to face the grim reality of a 20-30% failure on a healing spell, which means it is just plain useless. Not even in the same ballpark as the weaker 300hp Life Healing, unless you are lucky enough to have an 18/130 base INT, or a phenomenal equipment set. My Life monks/forcetrainers can cast Healing from CL35 on, and it is frustrating to be pushing CL50 and not able to cast Herbal Healing reliably.

Either this is true in general, or there was a trap on that square (I had forgotten to detect traps in my nervous haste over the jewel, and I was trying to wall of a horde of awake uniques). Somehow, I killed It, a wanted monster, despite my lack of See Invisible. I even picked up his corpse ... all of this without realizing until much later. Killed Lord Borel, picked up the Jewel, and decided to call it quits on the level.
The Augmentation from Borel's corpse finally maxed out my STR and INT, after a long time waiting.
Now, I wonder what else I might need? The Destroyer remains a threat I dare not take on at the moment. Am I just too weak, or too unwilling to commit precious resources? Dunno. My encounter with the big g at DL88 (my failed quest) saw me get 3 rounds of attacks before being summarily brought down to 200hp. Projecting off this limited datapoint indicates I will need 60 potions of healing to do it in, but surely that is too pessimistic. Perhaps reflection and some more Staves of Healing would be enough?
