I'm rolling the early game. Now, to slaughter more dragons! My 223 AC makes me feel very safe, and my recent upgrade from Sting to Nain makes me fee very deadly. Still, Mindcrafters seem strong in the early to mid game, but somewhat weak in the end game to me. Hopefully, I'll luck into Vorpal Blade or something similar ...

Bug Brain is one wise insect. Still, the only spell that is hard to cast is Psycho Spear (7% fail), which only does about 170hp for 35sp. I'll just attack with Nain for over 500hp, thank you very much! Thus, I don't mind my huge encumbrance penalty.

I'd love a _Healing, so perhaps I will break form and do Doom Quest II early.

I was starting to slow down a bit. With only 670hp, a single breath from a GWoChaos sent me down to 250hp or so, leaving me wondering just how good my magic skills are. So far, I have been 3 for 3 with staves of healing.

Then, an Ice Wyrm dropped Amber {Po} at the bottom of lair! Super duper sweet, boosting my hp all the way up to 825 (I shuffled armor for another +4 con)!

So, I fight a single Great Wyrm of Law, that turns into 3 Sky Drakes, 2 Great Wyrms of Balance, 1 Great Wyrm of Space Time. But, in the ashes, there it is:

*****FEANOR*****

Again :D :D :D

... And Brand from a vault. So, I hardly need to wear a ring of speed now that I am +44 speed. I'll wear this Lordly Protection instead which is probably the 2nd best one I've ever found, coming with sound and shards resistance. (The best was a "Mightiest in the Galaxy" variety, which must be incredibly rare!)

The Jewel from Surtur for even more speed!

Hmmm ... lack of levitation means I can't get to R'lyeh. Well, I could swap stuff, but I'm not sure I want to wade thru those demon infested levels without levitation. So, I'll hang here in Angband for a bit.

It is getting rather crowded down here. I'm killing what I can, leaning heavily on my staves of healing, which are wonderful. Still, there are numerous charge drainers to contend with.

Am I condemned to wield Nain forever? It is pretty good, but it is hardly the best weapon in the universe!

Ah! Werewindle and I are now celebrating our 1 hour anniversary! I really think using Werewindle is a state of mind. Of course, it is anti-skimming the top of the Dragon's Lair, but I am waaay past that now. Keep the levels small and enjoy :D

Failed on the Destroyer. 24 charges of _Healing and 10 !Healing. Had the bastard down to 1 star and me at 400hp with *no* healing. I yelled for time, took my 3 free moves which was only 2 for some reason, and the Destroyer woke up and pummeled me down to 200hp. I had to abort. So now, I carry all 50+ !Healing that I own. That jerk must die!

On 29.4.2010 18:43 chris wrote:
[CL50:DL98] 10:04
It took nearly an hour for the Destroyer to show up again. In the end, I had to go back to big levels. 28 charges of _Healing, Amber activation and 10 !Healing. Pretty much the same requirements as before.

So I blew 20 !Healing on the Destroyer and Cantoras blew up 12 or so with his stupid whirlpools. Loki took 9. That leaves me with only 38. Better start rebuilding ...

Werewindle power ... Off! I'll go with the glaive now, though I am currently unskilled and only about 50% accurate vs. AC 175. I burned my ?Artifact on a shadow cloak since now I need darkness resistance. Picked up +3 wis, but not much else.

Lohengrin from a GCV on DL96 completes my bug brain. Now, I think it is Sauron, Oberon then the Serpent!

That was harder than I would have liked ... but I had the resources to pull it off. I really should have killed Sauron first, though, but I was too lazy to hunt him down. Numerous close calls in the 200's, but that is what *Healing* and Life are for.

Morgoth only got summoned twice ...

Wtf ???
Did you stay at dlvl 23 until clvl 42 ???
(I'm not used to consulting char dumps, and may ignore many things which seem obvious to ppl here)
At which clvl were you able to start pwning in the dragon cave ?

Congratulations on the win! Nice to see you and Werewindle finally getting along :D

(Honestly --- chaos brand drives me crazy too. But I tend to play suicidal vanilla town characters who are overjoyed to use any artifact they can get, so I'll gladly accept Werewindle's chaos brand along with its many useful powers. I can see why most "real" characters --- those with multiple weapon options --- would just as soon ditch the thing.)

@EvilPotatoe:

A Bug's Life
=======

Mindcrafters start slowly, with no offense other than gimped melee. So, farm mice and worms at the top of the yeek cave for CL6. Make sure you like your early stat rolls. Then, Thieves Hideout and Warg problem. You should be CL11 or so at this point, and gain pulverise. Mr. Bug got lucky early stats and had 3 blows by this point. DL6 quest in Angband and hope for a lucky drop. DL12 is probably too difficult, so wait. Sewer quest and undead masses to CL20. Orc Quest and Doom Quest I to CL21. Vault for Sting (get !Speed and !Healing from the Arena first). This is a total crap shoot, so hope to be lucky. Mr. Bug made this, getting Sting in the first chamber.

Tower Quest: This quest allows you to leave and come back. It is DL30 with very good strategic walls. Level up to CL30 by farming Granite Walls. Farm Quartz Veins for gold. Shop. This is somewhat of a major scum, but frankly, I'm tired of slogging thru orcs in the early game and would like to speed things along (e.g. winning in under 12 hours).

Dragon's Lair (CL30): At this point, you can probably do the Dragon's Lair, depending on what you bought from the BM. I had 7 attacks with Sting for 300hp damage, and combined with Mindcrafter buff and Pulverise, I could handle most elemental dragons at the top of the lair (Storm and Ice are easiest, but Mr. Bug could do Hell and Bile as well. He held of on venom until CL35). Be sure to bring !Healing just in case. This is a leveling phase of the game, but you also want some good drops as well. I scored Nain and Yositsune.

Cloning Pits (CL35): Excellent drops from all the Its and Gachapins and you are bound to get something nice. The boots are a welcome reward.

Back to the Dragon's Lair for more leveling, and then the Old Castle (CL39). Doom Quest II for the _Healing at CL40 (It took some healing to do this quest as the Iron Liches were nasty). Then, sprint to the bottom of the Dragon's Lair and hang out. I picked up Feanor and Brand there ... nuff said.

At that point, I dove the quests in Angband (Or I may have done some before diving to the bottom of the lair ... I can't remember). Without levitation, I just played the rest of the game in Angband.

@Djabanete
Werewindle worked out nicely ... but if you read the above strategy guide, which relies on killing big dragons at the top and then the bottom of the lair, then Werewindle just doesn't work. At DL90+ of Angband with small levels turned on, it performed nicely. Another time to use Werewindle is when playing with Unusual Rooms turned on ...

Ok, so you take on dragon's lair at lvl 30, I should re-try some mindcrafters !
(lost a lvl 37 magic-eater to a storm wyrm yesterday, 300 insta dmg... no resistances -> "shit class")

Thx for the detailed bug's life.

Also, where can I find hengband 1.7.2 and information about it ?
I got 1.7.0 somewhere on my HDD but don't have any changelog (and wont (re)try it without having read at least a crude one, as I *HATE* ignoring stuff)
(I Also tried Entroband some time ago but didn't like the way it went. + as it's been abandonned quite fast, I didn't try it much)

Forgot to mention the tower abuse part : Does tower have any particularly good drops ? or just its cool walls and easy stairs ?

I usually abuse of labyrinth to get high level spellbooks or some other cool stuff, but didn't know about tower beeing such an (even more) ridiculous quest.

Before, I tought this quest was pointless, now, I see it's even worse :)

You can get a Windows compile of 1.7.2 here:

To build yourself, do an svn checkout from:

I'm not sure about any changelog ...

Thanks for the links, I now better understand why I didn't found it :)

I tested a little the version, and quickly noticed improvements in the interface (e.g. interract with visuals/auto-destroyer), but after check, thoses were already in 1.7.0

BUT it has an issue which may be the reason why I kept playing 1.6.2 after founding 1.7.0 : I can't use the alt-gr key, e.g. to inscribe an item.
Maybe it's cause I got a french keyboard, I just remember I already had this problem once in the past.
As I'm not used to compile other programs than java ones and never compiled C programs outside of my studies, I won't try playing with the source, or at least, not now.

But I'll still continue to look forward new versions ! (and cross my fingers)
