So I fired up a test character to try the "Preserve Off" option, and just found my first special level. For perspective, killing Mime is about the limit of my current power, that and surviving the Hengband mobs, which populate every level. Anyhow, on this special level is a vault, and in the vault is Eihort, the Thing in the Labyrinth. He causes hallucinations, is quick, and is a DL53 monster. He is now chasing me, as I attempt to lead him away from the vault. On his heals, eager to join in the fray, is Dwar, the Dog Lord something or other. Yikes! He's fast, and quite beyond me as well. Behind in the vault is a Lloigor, like Dwar, also a DL44 monster.

A tough draw. I don't have any teleport other, so I'll attempt to draw the nasties out. And its a shame, because this character has had a charmed start, gaining every single random stat roll, and finding several stat potions to boot.

Doing it is relative, I guess :) OK, so I'm luring out Eihort and Dwar, when they both catch LoS on me, and I need to teleport. I had cleared the level before starting, which was very important! But Dwar has a much greater range of detection that Eihort, so he finds me all the way on the other side of the level, while Eihort stupidly stays put. OK, I use up my lucky wand of stone to mud to attempt to bottle up Dwar, and succeed, teleporting back to face Eihort. I battle him for a while. I guess I was more powerful then I thought, as I am making good progress. Clear Mind is fabulous, and I'm hasted and double resisting acid, at least. Pulverise blinks him around, so he is not able to touch me. But then Eihort summoned an Archpriest. Damn, I didn't think he could summon out of depth like that! Flee!!

OK, so I'm back to my lure away strategy, and whammo, hallucination. Ouch, that lasts forever, and I'm teleporting about trying to find a safe spot. But the level has become re-overrun with monsters. Where did I leave Dwar? Finally, I'm pulverising something or other, and it is barely flinching, yet blinking as well. I guessed (correctly) that was Eihort, so I teleported again, and lucked into a safe spot where I could rest the 5,000 or so turns for hallucination to clear.

Its not going well :( But Dwar and Eihort are out of play, I think. Back to the Archpriest, who immediately summoned a Death Knight. Damn! Out of depth summon again! I killed the knight with pulverise, was down to 100hp and 2sp facing the knight's summons of an arch vile, a young blue dragon, and a storm giant. Finally, normal summons. Cure Crits, Clear Mind for enough sp for pulverise, and blast. I was able to pull out of that situation without teleporting, which would have been deadly, I think. And the arch priest was cowering out of view licking his wounds, so I polished him off.

Next was the Lloigor, which was the toughest thing imaginable at this stage. Drain con, summon plasma vortices (5), shard and shimmering vortices (1 each), nexus votices (3 ... and I don't resist). Eventually, I got him, but it took everything I had!

So the vault's mine, right? Not yet. I still had a few minor uniques as well as an entire pack of nexus hounds. Who thought nexus could be so annoying? I resisted the stat scramble several times, but did get teleported back out to the Eihort and Dwar Death Zone a couple of times. But in the end, patience prevailed, and I am the proud owner of:
[1] a +4 Cloak of the Bat!
[2] Bloodspike
[3] Paurnimmen

Nothing worth dying for, certainly. But that was quite an adrenaline rush. You're right, Adam, this is a different play style :)

Time for a break, so time for a dump. Boy, vaults abound! I've done maybe 7 or 8 special levels, and I've also found a couple nasty vaults on levels without a special feeling, so the feeling definitely means there is an artifact just waiting for you ... probably just behind that Dracolisk of Death!! The latter was guarding Cambeleg on my last outing, and I fear the Nether breath. Fortunately, the vault also had 2 rings of nether resistance, which I now carry for just such an emergency.

One of the reasons I picked the Mindcrafter is that I thought they could handle vaults well. They have great detection (enlightenment at CL20 and temp ESP at CL25), great defense (Character Armor at CL13), early haste at CL23, and Pulverise is a wonderful spell. Take mister Dracolisk. I was ready to fight him, swapping out my poison resistance for nether, when one of my early pulverise spells sent him out of the vault, and me out of danger, as he could not get back to me. I love that spell :)

So I hang out in the Anti-Melee cave, where I feel like I have a distinct advantage. Hey, if I'm not going the melee, then neither should the monsters!

I always thought about playing mighty mindcrafter and ignoring the time stop spell completely, that seems useless, cuz later, Mindcrafter melee seems to own psicospears...

On 6.8.2009 01:29 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Mighty is a good choice for Mindcrafters, but Stop Time is not completely useless (though psycho spears royally suck). For the Serpent of Chaos, I recommend the following:
[1] When he gets next to you (and let him spend energy by breaking thru a wall to do so), immediately stop time.
[2] Take your 4 free moves (s/b at least 4 to be worthwhile, I think).
[3] When time flows normally, continue to melee until he damages you severely, usually another turn or 2.
[4] Read ?teleport (you have 0 sp, remember).
[5] Quaff !Restore Mana and !Healing
[6] Repeat

It is a good effective way to fight. If your melee output is anything decent, say, at least 400hp/round, you should be doing 2400hp per cycle. After 15 repetitions, the serpent is dead!

[CL37:Cloning Pits] 08:16:48
I waited quite a bit before doing the Cloning Pits, mainly because my Entish dexterity was prohibiting melee (-6 Dex is pretty bad, and it gets worse, reaching -8 Dex for the end game). This makes getting Shiva's boots a 100% requirement, I think. Once I had Mjollnir (+4 Dex) and Hammerhand (+3 Dex), I was able to scrape up 4 attacks, so I decided to give it a go.

I'm glad I waited. The RNG gave me a fallen angel right next to the queen ants, invoking the deadly evil demon summoner explosion vs. the good ants. Fortunately, I was able to nip it in the bud, being able to handle the fallen angel. He went invulnerable and I kept failing on the psycho spear (>30%, having been mandatorily moronified by those darn dagons ...). So I just waited for the invulnerability to wear off before meleeing. Mopped up a couple more demon summoners, who were lurking behind chasms warming up their summoning spells while fire ants filled the quest level. So a bit of cleanup ... Domination charms ants, but I still killed over 200.

And now I return to Sting for disenchantment resistance. Having both Cambeleg and Shiva's Boots, I really want to preserve the melee bonuses. Both of those are end game items (maybe Fingolfin instead, given my race/class/personality). And I'm tired of hallucination, so I wear Padre for resist chaos, despite its massive 34lbs. Hey, it gives reflection and more melee bonuses too!

I still need that last attack, though ...

Well, this character is coming along. Switching to melee really speeds up the game play. The sheer number of crazy vaults was astounding for this character. When I fired up to play tonight, a major vault with a Dracolich (killed easily now), a Great Wyrm of Many Colors (DL68 ... killed with help of _Healing), Cain (DL71 ... let him steal and disappear) and a few other assorted nasties. All of this on DL38!! Oh boy. Here comes the madness again. But then it just stopped. I mean, totally stopped. No vaults or special levels in my last 30. I probably had 20 vaults and 15 specials in the 30 levels prior to that, so I'm not sure what happened. But it is quiet. Perhaps a bit too quiet? The monsters must all be gathered somewhere, no? And surely, they hoard treasures too wondrous to imagine!

On a side note, Brand dropped Werewindle rather than his crossbow, and I just can't stand the chaos brand. Plus, I need sting for that last attack ... and my damage output is now quite good, thank you very much. And in the surprise of the century, nay, the surprise of the millenium, Jack dropped his cloak!! Holy cow, even the Hold Life is extremely appreciated. I don't much need the telepathy, though ...

I'm trying to work my way down to the bottom of the castle in order to kill Layzark, but I keep getting waylaid by killer vaults and special levels. Really, at this depth I am meeting the deepest of monsters, having just run into Sauron the Sorceror. I destructed him though. The last killer vault had 10+ artifacts and was quite the turning point, though I had to deal with the likes of Sauron, Cyaegha and Shuma Gorath (none of which I can kill yet ...) At the moment, I feel a little slow being only +11 base speed. I'll try to work on that ...

131 uniques down and only 129 to go. Its all down hill from here :)

Mandatory post on first reaching CL50. I'm still working on that super level (see screenshot) that was supposed to be my DL76 quest for Mephistopheles. Much much later, and the level is still "special".

So, I finally found some Genji and am convinced that I must dual wield. Adding to my conviction is this amazing "Lord of the Flies". Wow! 4d11 damage dice. +2 attacks. High plusses to hit and damage. And a dragon slay? I'm sold :)

I still need to deal with some mega nasties, which will probably get destructed at this point. I burned my 8 charges of healing fighting off the beginnings of a dragon engine (3 Sky drakes and about 15 wyrms of law and balance ... again, I can't emphasize how effective a 12d11 weapon can be! And that was all single wielding ...) And, I burned 4 precious !healing killing Yig. He hits pretty hard, and was in the way ...

So, maybe 10 arts so far. How many more could there possibly be?

On 8.8.2009 05:17 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
[CL50:DL87] 18:46:17
Nah ... I better just single wield after all. Accuracy here is 71% vs AC175. Dual wielding is only 45% accurate, even with the genji. I'm not sure how Great Mind did it ... though I guess he had better equipment (2 rings of power could help).

So, this damage output for a Mindcrafter is just freakin' insane!! Its about double what they normally do ...

On 8.8.2009 16:29 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
[CL50:DL87] 20:32:14
My previous dump was 9 attacks for 855 damage with a base 15 speed. That speed is way too low, so I quickly shuffled in Thorin and another +10 speed ring for base 25 speed (still a bit too slow). But when Combat dropped both Narya and his gun, I felt I had to wear both. Surely an Ent must not pass up fire immunity?

So, after some massive equipment reshuffling, this is what I end up with. The harness is a good swap for that extra kick of damage. Also, I'm a bit encumbered thanks to Julian ... 7 attacks for 721 damage at base 20 speed. Still way too slow ... maybe if I can find a ring of speed +17 or something, things will improve (I'm not too slow for this depth, but too slow for the serpent).

217 uniques down, 45 to go. For the artifact scroll, I still need Jaws, Dionysis, and the Emperor Q. All of which can be found at this depth, so I'm just waiting for them. I have a diamond edge, a shadow cloak and some balance dragon scale mail that are all candidates. Which should I pick?

On 8.8.2009 18:01 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
[CL50:DL88] 21:40:12
Classic anti-climax. I picked up Jaw's corpse quickly. Later, on a special level, something summoned the Emperor Q, and I pounded it down to 3 stars in the midst of a sea of surprisingly weak summons. But then, Habu (the lone unique on the level prior to that) gained line of sight, and I could see him warming up his Mana Storm to gleefully destroy my corpse of triumph. And, from the other front, a slurping nauseating slimy shoggoth was quickly marching over to crush the corpse. I teleported and tried again, but this time the Q surrounded us both with greater undead including a couple of reavers (more mana storms). Teleport, lure away the summons, destruct. Finally, I built a long corridor, deciding my rockets would do the trick from a distance, thereby leaving the corpse away from the inevitable summons. I got greater dragons this time, and forgot summons would block my rockets, so I fell back on a couple of psycho-spears (I guess they don't royally suck after all!). A blink and then a race for the corpse. Mmmmmmm...

That left Dionysis, who took forever and a day to show. And in the end, I decided to go with my BDSM for the following reasons:
[1] I need Resist Poison from Colluin, so the Shadow Cloak was too risky.
[2] My awesome dragon gloves with Poison, Dark, Shards, et. al. seemed like a candidate, but could I really hope to beat the (+10, +10) and +4 Dex of Fingolfin? Doubtful.
[3] And the diamond edge. I've made some good ones in the past, but the odds of doing so are abysmally low. Maybe 5%.

So, BDSM it is ... and I got suckage. Picked up +4 AC, resistance to cold and nether. Ah, well ...

DL88 quest was Cerberus rather than the Destroyer, and in typically quiet before the storm fashion, the RNG took this moment to spring both Yog-sothoth and Gothmog on me. Gothmog, I destructed as I was carrying too many goodies. Yog, I destroyed, but not before losing quite a bit of Con.

Time for Oberon ...

Well, enough of this guy :) I jumped after the Serpent leaving unslain some powerful uniques, such as Sauron, Gothmog, Shub-Niggurath, Greath Cthulhu, etc. They all came out to play!

Also, this guy was way too slow for the final battle to be comfortable. That, and a 19% fail rate on Stop Time meant I didn't bother trying it ... Just straight melee with one of my favorites weapons. Oh, and like 60 !healing and 35 !*healing*. You can see by what's left of my resources that it took some doing ...

Grats on a nice Preserve Off win. Concluding comments about the playstyle?

To me it really turns up the excitement level a few notches, particularly when you aren't uber-powerful yet. Pulling out the last artifact on a special level, and depleting all your resources in the doing of it, is some seriously fun stuff.

I did enjoy this character. For one thing, I found him relying on the dungeon to gain power, rather than the towns. This is more fun, I think, although it is hard to resist the lure of townscumming, especially when you know a few tricks (like how to get lots of early gold). I never rested in the towns and managed to win on Day 21 (I had to walk to Zul about 8 times, and I spent quite a bit of time waiting for the palantir to recharge, but these are quite normal and acceptable). Also, I never stair scummed. I never used the Tower quest. And I never entered the Dragon's Lair. But all of this was only possible due to the utility of the mindcrafter. This character was running into Eihort and Dwar at a time when many characters are still scrambling for detect traps, the ability to light a room, see invisible or free action. I think I was very lucky in being able to handle the really hard early vaults. They were fun, but very stressfull ... in a good way. With this style, I think you need to do a few things:
[1] Be willing to die early. Take risks when they are warranted. But don't commit suicide. If you run into the Destroyer on DL22 when you are only CL15, then run ... if you can! (OK, I'm exaggerating a bit)
[2] Be willing to miss an occasional artifact. Generally, you won't miss anything that is a show stopper. This character actually never missed an artifact, something I am quite proud of :) But I don't think it would have been the end of the world if I had. Just make a serious effort when the level is special, do your best, but don't commit suicide. If it really is an impossible level, then move on.
[3] Don't power dive. Seriously. Just don't. Take your time and let the vaults bring the out of depth uniques to you. I spent a long time in the DL40 range, but did not feel bad doing so as I was routinely encountering DL50-70 uniques, and killing 'em when I could. Plus, I was killing uniques uniformly throughout the game. This is better than reaching DL98 with 180 uniques still alive ...
[4] Get wands of teleport other early ... nuff said.

And what is up with all those vaults? Does turning preserve off increase the vault frequency? I'm guessing vaults were five to ten times more common then they normally are. I hit stretches, especially in the DL28 to DL40 range where there was a vault on every level, sometimes two are three. A couple of times I sold out to clear a major vault, and the level stayed special. Oh, wait, there's an even bigger vault with 10 out of depth uniques in it right over there. Sigh. This was really really hard in the early going. So be prepared. Literally hundreds of "special" levels await you!

All in all, it was a fun way to play. I don't think my lucky trump high mages are up to the challenge though ... (Or maybe they are. They do get telepathy and teleport other really early. Hmmmmm ...)

On 9.8.2009 01:17 Djabanete wrote:
Well congratulations on the win!!! I'm glad you made it in the end. Funny about the apparent increase in vault frequency... Could it have been an anomaly, or are you pretty sure it was because of the option?

I recently tried playing with preserve off, and lo and behold I found a gigantic vault at depth 24. I tried valiantly to loot it, and even got Hammerhand, but the level stayed special and I got flattened by a Hru.

One stupid use of Preserve Off --- out of ?ID, lousy pseudo, and not sure if that high-dice weapon is an artifact? Drop it on the floor and wait a couple hundred turns to see if the level feeling becomes special!

Dynamic level feelings (that is, level feelings that will change while you're still on the level, depending on what drops, or what uniques are killed) is, to my knowledge, unique to Hengband. Preserve off in most variants (and vanilla) simply gives you a snapshot feeling at the time you first encounter the level, and it never changes. I really do like this in Hengband though, because you know when you can move on.

Never dropped items to see if they were special that way though. Typically if I'm out of means of ID or inventory space, I'll just destroy everything, which is a fairly easy way to confirm artifacts.
