Elliot's making Beastmen look way too fun, so I decided to start up this... I spent 2 hours creation-scumming to get the mutation I wanted (and I even backed it up because I didn't want to go through all that time waste again... as I see it, Hengband gives you the quickstart option for stat-rolling, so it's not really cheating to preserve your character's mutation as well).

The mutation I wanted? Eat Magic, of course! After finishing playing my Forcetrainer Rei, I realize the thing I'm going to miss most is Clear Mind.

Nothing too much of note so far... picked up ESP mutation which is nice, and Painful Clarity which is not so nice. On a rather silly note, I forgot what the first Trump book was called, and bought Deck of Many Things instead, really really early. And thus I was utterly broke for way too long (I was going on autopilot and didn't notice the price).

Lvl 6 quest gave the Pattern Weapon, and Lvl 12 gave the Defender + Thengel. Shagrat was harder than expected (because, presumably, of low AC), and I had to use both my !oSpeed and my !oBerserkStrength, along with 2 !oCCW.

This combination, plus decent luck with items and mutations, might make this character too easy.

Icky Queen on Angband 21 dropped Poison Needle. Ulwarth dropped Boots of Levitation, HA weapon, and some RAcid armor, but also on 24 was a Shield of Reflection! Go back, and what do I see in the BM but a great Longbow? It was a bit out of my price range, so I went to the casino and gambled a bit in the Monster Arena to afford it.

And blackreaver, I'll really stop playing and wait now.. ^^ I get the feeling this character would go too fast if I continued to play.

That is an awesome start getting a bow like that so early. Everytime I play an Archer I find it takes 3 hours of playtime or more before the Black Market stocks an ordinary Long Bow, let alone a good/great one! Congrats! And yes, I imagine you could go very fast if you like with a bow like that :-)

Hmmm ... I don't think I will do a Beastman, since the Moron mutation is all but inevitable (My MirrorMaster was moronified 7 times, I think, and that is with a darn good saving throw). Guess you'll just have to play with a low INT ;-)

OK, I'll try to roll up a Ranger tonight (Jedi can wait a bit). I'm leaning towards a hobbit at the moment, but should probably do a more powerful race like High Elf or Vampire. We'll see ... I like quick starts!

Good Luck!

Ouch... picked up the moronic mutation when I leveled up to 27. Grendel and Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner were both on the level, but I could only get the Cleaner before resources ran out.

And I just tossed 80k for the Filthy Rag of Resistance, since it has 2 of my favorite high-resists, Poison and Nether. Had to sell a couple backup ego items to afford it though.

Try 1: At level 2 during Thieves quest, got "Albino" mutation (-4 CON). Suicide.

Try 2: At level 4 upon completion of Thieves quest, got "Short stubs for legs" (-3 Speed). Suicide.

Try 3: At level 2 during Thieves quest, got "Attract attention of Chaos Diety!" The random monsters were also luckily very puny, being Baron of Hell, Crypt Thing, and Gravity Hounds. Unfortunately, I completely forgot that Crypt Things can drain charges!! >_< So, I went in with 2 Staves of Speed (8 charges each), and also 3 !oSpeed. The staves went to zero, and I used 1 !oSpeed against the Baron, 1 against the Its, 2 against the Jurts, and was out of Haste by the time I got to Father Dagons and Gachapins >_< An extremely annoying hour later, I kill the rest of them using arrows. I've got a record number of artifacts from the Cloning Pits though! The take:

Anarion, Hammerhand, Cambeleg (this seems ultra-rare in Heng), Store of Lore, Thanos, Eorlingas, Fishingpole, and Golden Hammer.

Something approached me and I killed it... and levelled up... and Hionhurn was kind enough to summon a bunch of enemy monsters on me (no paralysis or equipment cursing this time; whew). I killed them, not knowing what it was (and using up the rest of my Speed and Healing supply while I was at it). And then I check my notes file and discover I killed Zoth-Ommog, Ariel, Hoarmurath of Dir, and Judge Fear. O_o

Managed to kill Nyogtha, but Thuringwethil summoned a much of high vampires around me, so I took the stairs down and recalled rather than check loot and possibly die. You know, if I'm not going to look through loot, I really should just abort quests rather than fight it through. >_<

On some level, I don't really understand Rangers. Sure, they do a lot of damage with their arrows very rapidly from a safe distance, but once you fire those arrows, they're more or less gone. Random breaths and such destroy them almost immediately. Now, it takes maybe one or two hundred arrows to kill a tough unique. To enchant them up to (+9, +9) costs something like 20k.. chump change, but it adds up (I think I've spent about 300k on enchanting arrows already). Also, how are you supposed to be able to carrying enough arrows for battles? Both in terms of slots and in terms of weight limit, I really can't see carrying more than, say, 3 stacks of arrows.

On 3.9.2005 08:09 wrote:
Of course you can hit the enemies with your sword! And in addition to that, you have great spells like stoneskin and swap position, and powerful LOS-control spells like forest creation, why don't you use them?
I agree that using arrows is safer, but are there *so* many uniques that are too dangerous to melee?
And, aganst the toughest uniques, I assume that 300 seeker arrows are enough. If you want to shoot down both the Unicorn and the Serpent, you'll need 600 or more seeker arrows maybe. Or just hit the Serpent to death! It's quite possible.

And I don't think the 4th spellbook of Trump worth carrying, and you definetely don't have to carry the food! Instead, 3 copies of 'Call of the Wild' should be more preferable.

This was one of *those* games. Angband 90 before I finally found my first RoSpeed, which happens to be only +7. A little while earlier when I gave up repeatedly scummed for a RoSpeed before the 88 battle, I swore that I'm not wearing any RoSpeed less than +10. I guess I'll try to live up to that. ^^

Wall of Stone is indeed very powerful, even more so when coupled correctly with Dimensional Door. In empty arena levels, I set up a bunch of "elevator stations" throughout the level, and jump away with them when I need to. Eat Magic is becoming increasingly useful as well, so I should start to carry the stocked rods with me.

I tend to very much dislike the Forest Creation spell though. Most monsters that cast intelligently will burn them right up, or ball around it and make you take partial damage. And what's more, it also impedes my line of sight.

Did a LOT of equipment reshuffling, and ended up losing Reflection and a lot of melee ability for +3 to INT and 1 Extra shot... carrying 792 normal arrows and 49 Seeker arrows... though the burden is bringing me down to +12 speed.

Let's see... +12 speed is 22 energy, 4.92 shots per round means 20.33 energy per shot, with standard deviation 6.3. So taking 2 turns is a z-score of 0.266, or probability 60% of moving every game turn and 40% of moving once every 2 game turns.

At hasted 12+10 speed, I get 32 energy per round, or a z-score of 1.853, or a probability of 96.8% of moving every game turn, and 3.2% of moving once every 2 turns. Should be enough.

Very tough fight, very very marginal victory. The earlier screenshot, despite its good positioning, was not where the final battle took place (ran out of arrows... figured).

Battle can be divided into three stages:

1) Looked for decent long corridors (even some that the Serpent himself made), D-Door to one end of it, and shoot arrows at the Serpent. If it breathed or Dispel Magicked on me, I ignored and continued firing. When I got low on HP (low as in < 500), I take a step out of its LoS, and then D-Door to a safe spot. When it summoned, if summons were low or medium strength, I'd D-door to in front of them (so that I was closer to Serpent, and also had a clear shot). If they were powerful, I'd read a ?oTeleportation.

I would then Eat Magic my Rods to recover SP, and then repeat with another corridor.

This continued until a good number of W's and U's filled the screen, at which point, I lured the Serpent to one corner and tactically *Destructed* the rest of the dungeon (using 2 of 4 ?o*Destruction* in the process). The Serpent was at 6 stars then.

I then repeated same tactics with Serpent until the screen was getting cluttered once again. Again, lured Serpent to one corner, and Destructed. However, because of stragglers from before, I had only brought Serpent down to 5 stars.

2) With no more Destruction, and the Serpent only half dead, I decided I needed to take more risk. Same strategy as before, except I would let the Serpent get up to melee range with me, and continue shooting arrows until I was in the red (400 or less HP). Then I'd ?oTeleport. Rinse and repeat. But alas, not only did the Serpent continue summoning, one of his summons proved to be Sauron, who immediately proceeded to summon his 5 Ring-Rangers.

This continued all over the map for a bit (me always trying to shake off Sauron, but usually not managing to), and the Serpent was at 3 stars, when I realized that the entire level had filled up with wandering Spectral Wyrms, Cyberdemons, and Nightcrawlers AGAIN.

And, to top it off, I was down to 4 ?oTeleport (I had only brought in 20 with me, to avoid taking yet another point of Speed penalty).

3) I decide the situation is bad enough to warrant using my 4% Dim Door when next to the Serpent and in the red. So, I pitched battle near the edge of the map, and did my kamikaze attackings, DimDooring when HP got red, which was always followed by immediate quaffing of !o*Healing* (note that quaffing !o*Healing* in the Serpents presence would likely give him a triple move against me the very next turn).

Seen by my number of !o*Healing* left, I was able to successfully do this 6 times (which has a 78% chance of success), and managed to kill the Serpent before he or something else killed me. One time out of the 6, DimDoor did go awry though, and teleported me far away. I ate my rods and Teleport/DimDoored back.

----

The Good Luck in this Battle:

1- Serpent didn't Dispel Magic all that often, so I was at +25 speed quite often.
2- None of my 6 critical DimDoors failed
3- No teleports into very nasty situations
4- My second copy of Nature Mastery did not blow up. I totally didn't know that you books can still be destroyed by Logrus even if you have Fire Immunity! If that second Nature Mastery (or, actually either of my two Trump books) got destroyed, I would have been forced to abort.

The Bad Luck in the Battle:

1- Serpent summoned MUCH more than any other time I remember fighting him.
2- 3 of my Rods of Lightning Balls blew up almost consecutively fairly early in stage 2, which severely drained my sustainability (because DimDoor, while having only 4% Fail Rate, does cost a fairly hefty 40 SP)
3- Sauron chain summoning
4- Moronic Mutation! I think Shub-Niggurath gave it to me. I got this about the middle of the fight with Serpent, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but additional 12% fail to Herbal Healing and lowered SP pool is never good.

---

All in all, a very risky and marginal victory--I think my tactics were good, but I really really should have had at least 10 ?o*Destruction* instead.

(But actually, I have to thank Elliot... I read up on his "Dread" tactics and pondered for a long time before I actually started fighting. Assuming my math isn't flawed, +25 speed (hasted or otherwise) is actually the practical max speed for Archers or anyone else firing 5 shots per round... it's a 99+% chance of moving once every game turn. So, really, the "Speed" question boils down to how many game turns it takes you to quaff potions and cast spells... My low low speed basically didn't allow quaffing potions in combat, but otherwise it's about the same.)

Interestingly, the maximum damage from arrows is on a par with maximum damage from melee, all things considered:

Arrows, fire every game turn at +25 speed and 5 shots/rnd, is just 200 per round, with Seeker Bolts (multiply by slays/brands/moos).

Melee, Berserker (or otherwise) with 1000 damage at +40 speed, is 1000 damage per 2.5 turns, so that comes out to be 400 damage per game turn.

Thus, with Slay Evil Seeker Bolts, Archers do about the same damage per game turn as Monks (though only about 1/2 as much as dual-wielding berserker). They, however, get to move almost every game turn, which greatly reduces the chances of Serpent double-move death.

Cheers!
