(clevel:36, dlevel:21) Playing in the Dragon Lair makes dlevel kinda silly until the character finally moves out of the Dragon Lair. Currently in the Cloning Pits.

Went for the summoners first, starting with the Dagons, then going through them in order, left to right. Everything went fine (well, I realized that Nixie doesn't have SI, and It's don't show up on Infravision or telepathy, so its quite aggravating that one got away. Slowly hunting it down with rods of detection.) until the Gachapins. The very first one summoned hydras on its first move, and the hydra's first move was to breathe, waking the other two Gachapins, who also summoned. Hydras everywhere and in packs, they're quite a handful for Nixie. Then I realized that a Queen Ant had woken up and gotten out, and was summoning like crazy.

I thought things had gotten out of hand and considered recalling out and failing the quest, but Nixie stuck with it, played conservative, and whittled down the monsters while all the summons fought each other.

The Pits are still a LONG way from being cleaned up, but the Gachapins and Queen Ants are finally dead, with only the It left as a potential summoning threat. Too many Hydras left for this to be a sure thing quite yet, but I think I see light at the end of the tunnel.

Oh, that playing time number is WAY high, as I tend to leave the game on in the background while I do other stuff. I've probably spent 40 minutes playing the Cloning Pits, but the game has been on all day. Real play time is probably 7 or 8 hours, not 29.

Yeah, he's got Zantetsuken, Hagen, Aeglos, and that scythe of slicing all sitting in his house while he uses the broadsword of slaying.

Part of it is because I got tired of using Zantetsuken all the time, Hagen (even with its speed bonus) totally doesn't measure up, and he just found Aeglos and the scythe after I had set my heart on using the broadsword.

Had to max out his dex to get full attacks with the broadsword, and that took a while, but its both vorpal and poison branded, and I totally love it for no reason I can adequately explain.

On 23.6.2005 22:15 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Aeglos (and maybe even the scythe, to say nothing of Zantetsuken) would have been a better choice in the Pits, since almost everything there resists poison, but I didn't think of that at the time.

(clevel:36, dlevel:44) Finally finished the Cloning Pits and headed into Angband. Found some nice stuff in the Pits, with Eonwe the headline item, but I'm sticking with the broadsword of slaying for now. Tried meleeing Dwar with it, just to see if it would break, but I guess that only happens in ToME. Dwar was surprisingly easy once he got into melee range and he only summoned shadow and water hounds while closing, so it was very managable.

Fighting Ulik was just hopeless once I realized I had forgotten to bring arrows along. Ulik is fast and hits hard, but doesn't summon, cast spells, or attack at range, so if you can stay away from him and pepper him with ranged attacks, he's easy. Nixie wasn't equipped for that and meleeing would have been suicide, especially since an earlier battle with a Spectral Tyrannosaurous left his STR drained enough to lose a blow or two. So, he picked around the level to see if there was anything else of interest, and then intentionally failed it.

On 24.6.2005 22:52 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Long ago, a Know Self potion revealed that while Nixie had a life rating of 104/100 (which is mildly nice), his max INT and WIS were both in the 18/130 area, and STR, DEX, and CON were all 18/70 or 18/80, which is no good.

So a potion of New Life shows up in the BM, and Nixie buys it and drinks it. Initially the reuslts looked great. WIS 18/80, CHR18/90, CON 18/130, and everything else 18/100. That's just about as perfect as can be. With those scores, I could live with a below average health rating. 98/100 or even 96/100 would be tolerable with stats like that. Sadly, his score came in at an impressively dismal 82/100. 82? I didn't even know it could go that low.

Looks like Thorondor and another potion of New Life is suddenly next on the to-do list.

Can't you (temporarily) change your second magic realm to Trump?
You can use "Shuffle" then! And That's definetely worth trying.

Okay - I'm going to show my ignorance here. I've noticed on various character dmps that people were able to cast other magic realms temporarily. How do you do it?

First of all, collect enough potions of self knowledge.

Then, get a trump spellbook (or any realm you want to study) and
simply G)ain a new spell from it.

But beware that it makes you forget all sorcery spell you've learned. and you have to restudy them (won't be a real problem once you've got enough INT though.)

Oh, I've forgot to mention.
That applies this case, and you can't change your first realm, so monks, paladins, or high-mages can't do that. Just in case.

Hmm. I just looked through the "Shuffle" effects. Which one would I be shooting for?

"judgment" I believe....

Wielded Eonwe for the INT boost (also raised HP to 285), studied "Shuffle" and then cast it a few times. The first cast of Judgement raised hp to 305, which was nice, but he kept casting Shuffle hoping for better. Eventually it came up again, and his HP jumped to 332, which I figured was good enough. He then switched back to Sorcery, and is again using it happily. Thanks for the advice.

He kept wielding Eonwe after that, plus his next trip into Angband netted 3-4 CON potions and he leveled, so his HP are now up to 413! A 147 HP jump in 1 level and a big boost to his prospects of survival.

(clevel:38, dlevel:54) After using that rather nice longbow of accuracy for quite a while, Nixie is suddenly flooded with high-end launcher choices, all of which were found over the course of about an hour and a half of playing. First, Belthronding was being carried by a Shadow Demon in the Haunt House quest. That was a big step forward (not least because of the rDisenchant it carries) and made some fights much easier. Tthen a while later on Angband 54 or so, Nixie was sneaking up on a sleeping GWoIce (Eonwe has taken over as the everyday weapon and it has IMMCold) when he saw a light crossbow (x4) just sitting there on the ground and it turned out to be Brand. Nixie used Brand for the fight against the Wyrm, and when it died, it dropped a bunch of stuff, including that rather nice randart shortbow. Lower bonuses than Belthronding, but it gets the same extra shot and gives +3 to DEX, CON, Stealth, and Searching. Its probably the 3rd choice, but I'm a Stealth addict, and the +CON would also be really nice. Decisions, Decisions.

For those with Sorcery as a magic school, casting "Shuffle" can work really well, because one of the spells in Pattern Sorcery is "Know yourself", so you've got unlimited self-knowledge.

(clevel:40,dlevel:65) Got the Norsa at dlevel 62, and its pretty nasty. After multiple skirmishes and retreats to heal and rest, Nixie had it down to 3 stars, though her supplies were almost gone. Sadly, it then summoned a pair of GWoV's and with no healing potions and only a few teleport scrolls and CCW potions left, I decided discretion is the better part of valor and recalled out, failing it. That's darn frustrating, because the Norsa drops treasure like Santa Claus, but it beats being dead. If I had waited until level 40 and Herbal Healing, Nixie probably could have pulled it off.

Finally settled on going with Belthronding over Brand, at least for now. I decided that RDisenchantment, +3 Stealth, and a ranged attack that's superior to his melee attack were more valuable than +10 speed and a puny ranged attack.

If Nixie can go toe-to-toe with the Norsa, I guess he's probably ready for the Old Castle. The actual reason for delaying the Old Castle is that Nixie doesn't need the reward. Yeah, Bard is great, but Bethronding works better for him. Might as well get it over with.

(clevel:41, dlevel:71) Dead as canasta, and stupid, too. Note the unused potions of healing in inventory. He had just about finished clearing a 'p' pit (mostly ivory and topaz monks, with some white knights and Seraphs in the middle), when I noticed some armor had dropped that had a non-standard defense rating, so I figured it was probably an artifact. As usually happens, focusing on anything other than staying alive got him killed.

The pit was pretty much clear, and most of their summons were gone (Eonwe rocks), but Nixie had less than half his HP left and I knew Ancalagon and company weren't far away. When the GWoC popped around the corner and summoned, I was busy fighting multi-hued hound and didn't see it. Nixie finally teleported it away, and tried to finish off the gold dragon.

When the GWoMC came around the corner, Nixie was badly beaten up, but I didn't want to use a Healing potion fighting stupid multi-hued hounds and I still wanted to get to that armor. I tried not to give it a chance to do anything by teleporting it away immediately. Apparently, GWoMC's resist teleportation, which is something I had not known, because it then breathed gas, which was the end for Nixie.

Never found out what that armor was.
