Ok, this is WAY WAY WAY too early to post, but I got 4 (!) random stats ups, ALL BEING DEX! Wow... I'm tempted to put 10 in DEX too just for aesthetics, but it's already at 18/88, it's probably better spent elsewhere. Chance = (1/6)^4 = 1 in 1296. Though, to be fair, I suppose I should multiply that by 3, since something like that in STR or WIS would also be pretty impressive.

And I finally figured out that I should just screw the balance thing initially and use my Sexy features. ^^

Oh, the shame! Failed by lvl 6 quest.. Telmora was out of ?oTeleport, and I figured 2 would be enough... NOT! Even with the nifty Forcetrainer AC bonuses, he hit way too hard (~40 damage), and I didn't really have a chance. :-/

But in the long run, Forcetrainers are kinda gimped for martial arts (max blows 5), and should be using a good ego or randart weapon.

Oh, and the {uncursed} Cloak I found lying on lvl 5 of Angband turned out to be Colluin. *does happy dance*

And to further the irony, I just picked up the Dagger of Fiona!! OMG... of course this happens with a character that absolutely can't use Daggers >_<

Get the feeling I'd get mobbed in the Orc Camp quest, and I already have a good Cloak, so I'm not very tempted to do that right now.

Ah, yes, the Sewer Quest. I had a couple iterations of Rei die on that before I posted. The trick is to realize which breeders are the most dangerous.. usually this comes to be the Blue Icky Things, which cast spells that Confuse and Blind (albeit kind of low chance, but when you have like 100, it's dangerous), unless you're a pure Warrior type, in which case the Gremlins are kinda annoying because they eat your food. With that being said. I Teleported repeatedly first to get to near that area, and cleared out the Blue Icky things before they reproduced too much, and cleared out the Nether Worms as well, since it was so close. Next was the White Crocodile, which took a !oSpeed and several !CCW. Finally, I teleport a couple times again, and clear out the gremlins.

I think the trick to completing any quest with Sexy personality is to have LOTS of ?oTeleport ready. But, I haven't done any of the truly formidable quests yet (I might just skip the whole Telmora set).

Cleared the Sewer once more. I entered the quest at clvl 16, killed off the breeding mice near the entrance, and then teleported to near the nether worms. I cleared those, and starting working on the Giant Spiders, and then realized I was taking way too long, and that the blue icky things would be reproducing like mad by then, so I quaffed the 1 !oSpeed I had from the Arena, and then charged into the Blue Icky niche and cleared those. Haste ran out by the time I saw the White Croc, but I had enough free hits on him with Small Force Ball, plus the RoDamage was enough that I could win without teleporting and resting.

Interesting finds so far: lvl 6 quest dropped a Bastard Sword of Westernesse, which sold for 11k and provided me with a decent chunk of change. Lvl 12 quest dropped Dagger of Rilia, which sold for 22k, and allowed me to buy a number of nice items from the BM (RoDamage, Rod of TeleOther)

Still can't update because experience is too low... will try to be more careful this time, but the lack of RBase will soon be annoying.

Innate FA has just kicked in, but the death of the last Rei makes me want some source of SeeInvis... to this end, a Feanorian Lamp of the Immortal Eye would be great, but in the meantime, I'm lugging the Spear of Destiny around with me.

And almost died again due to the lack of SeeInvis. A group of Dread snuck up on me while I was beating up Troll, and next thing I knew, I was down 4 or 5 points of STR, and also much more hurt than expected due to Nether Bolts... if I hadn't picked up the Dragon Shield with exactly that resist right before, I'd have had to start over again.

However, Hithlomir is much weaker than for a "normal" character because 1) it's random resist is Blind, which I'm getting from either source of SeeInvis, 2) +4 Stealth is useless on a Sexy character, and 3) AC from body slot is relatively huge for monks and forcetrainers--currently I'm getting 46 from that slot, and I'm meleeing enough that it's a concern.

I got a Soft Leather Armor of Elvenkind with RDisenchant just now though, so I'm considering wearing that, and then taking off Holhenneth and swapping in the Lamp.

Dave's Quickstart Guide (a.k.a. How to clear the Sewer quest and get to Clvl 20 with a Sexy Forcetrainer in under an hour)

1. Go buy standard armor and forget about Forcetrainer balance at the beginning. Use whip (as opposed to martial arts) Head to Yeek Cave, and kill things until you level to 2. If the stat-up isn't STR, DEX, or CON, start over.

2. At clvl 2, go back to town, get the Thieves quest, and buy 1 !oHeroism and 1 !oCSW. Enter the Thieves quest, and wait near the entrance, quaffing the !oHeroism immediately. Kill them as they approach you, and 1 !oCSW should be enough to take them out.

3. Should be about clvl 5 when you clear the Thieves quest, go back to town, get your reward and the next quest, Wargs. Sell the reward, and use the money to buy 1 ?oRecall. Head down to Yeek Cave 5, and kill Wargs with your whip. At lvl 10, put your stat point into an important stat (STR, DEX, WIS, or CON) that *ISN'T* at 17 (if it's 16, you can boost to 18 if you're lucky, if it's 18, you can boost to 18/30 if you're lucky, but the most you can get at 17 is 18/01).

4. At lvl 10, take off all your armor pieces. You should have more AC now going naked, as well as a +1 to Speed. Clear the Warg quest, and recall back to town. You should be about dlvl 12. Buy sufficient food and Oil.

5. Head to Morivant, and buy another ?oRecall. Then head to Angband, and clear the dlvl 6 quest. Recall back to surface, and walk to Telmora. Around clvl 15, you'll get your second blow with martial arts, which will make martial arts superior to the Whip. At Telmora, sell the loot from the dlvl 6 quest, and hopefully you have enough money to buy a RoProtection (check other towns if necessary), and plenty of !oCCW, !oHeroism, and ?oTeleport. Enter the Sewer Quest.

6. Kill the mice near the entrance, and then repeatedly teleport until you pop near the Blue icky things. Kill off those, and then the rest should be relatively easy.

Real time to this point: (for me) 1:02 and 0:55

On the other hand, since I didn't manage to find any RoSlaying or RoDamage yet, Damage output is shot to ground zero. Waited around towns and scummed the BM for a good bow or xbow, and found one of Extra Might with (+15) on damage. Using that as primary attack now.

The fight with Brand was too close... way too close. I came about an inch away from hitting ?oTeleportLevel to abort. Now, mostly this is my own fault for being stingy and not bringing enough Healing, but it was exacerbated by the fact that the level was small, so I couldn't really teleport out to rest. For some reason or other, Grow Trees spell also didn't work, even though I didn't get the Fail message. In the end, I used up all 6 charges from my Staff of Speed, and another !oSpeed, as well as all 4 !oHealing I brought with me. What I really *should* have brought along, however, was a couple of !oRestoreMana.. my stupid Super Kamehameha has a 49% fail rate, and messing that up wasted a decent chunk of my SP. Thank goodness I at least had enough sense to bring lots of ?oTeleport and !oCCW.

Brand dropped his crossbow, which is always nice (in fact, Brand seems to usually drop his crossbow for me; I only remember 2 characters who didn't already have it, kill him and not find it). Extra bonus is that the random Resistance is Confusion! Normally this wouldn't be so great, but for some reason or other I seem to be having lots of trouble finding that this time around.. with that taken care of, I can swap in another ring for another HighResist.. So then I went ahead and tried the Old Castle, thinking I should be able to easily take it with 5 !oHealing, 2 !oRestoreMana, my Staff of Speed, and a high-fail Herbal Healing.

Not so. The Greater Titans summoned the King in Yellow, Dwar, Judge Fear, Garm, tons of ancient Vampires, a few Dracolichs, etc. I was able to take out Judge Fear and the King in Yellow, but in the process, the Wall Monsters bred like crazy, and the whole level was getting opened up. Hm... that didn't go as well as planned. I was at dlvl 60 Angband, and decided I wanted to try the 62 quest so I recalled to town to pick up essentials. Recall back, move down stairs to 61, and find a vault with open entrance. Now, normally I would have just left it alone and gone down to 62, but I saw Dworkin, Gerard, Benedict, Fiona, AND Corwin... talk about an Amberite party! The kicker was that 4 out of the 5 (i.e. everyone except Fiona) were wanted, so I decided I should detour and try to kill as many of those as I could. Now, since I was prepared for a big battle for dlvl 62, I had brought a big supply of both ?oTeleport and !oCCW... about 50 of each. So, first thing, try to separate the Amberites and take them one by one. Had a bit of trouble with that, but eventually managed to pull out Benedict. Unfortunately, I wasn't strong enough to take him out, and had to Teleport out. So, I figured I'd try Dworkin next, and tried to pull him, but he and Fiona would not separate, so against my better judgement I fought both of them simultaneously, and had brought Dworkin down to 1 star (using up a good chunk of Healing supply)--but then he blinked, and Ancalagon showed up, as well as some others. Teleport repeated again, rest up, head back, kill Ancalagon. Dworkin was back at about 5 stars, and I was going to try to kill him again, but something drained charges on my Staff of Speed, and various summoning L's and W's were running around, so I was in a bad position and had to abort.

Of course, ?oTeleportLevel, safest method short of Destruction. And I sink instead of rise >_< Quest was for Omarax, and I find and exchange melee with him unhasted. Manage to kill him after quaffing 2 !oHealing and 1 !o*Healiing* I found, but I was at 150 HP, and there was an Ultimate Beholder he summoned, so I teleported out, rested up, and tried to go back for the loot. The Ultimate Beholder summoned 3 more Ultimate Beholders as I approached (it was an Arena level, and I didn't bring Nature's Wrath), and then I realized belatedly that I was down to my last ?oTeleport. Sighing in defeat, I read it and recall, abandoning whatever artifacts Omarax dropped. >_<

Now, any recommendations on what to enchant? Swimsuit, I guess?

Second ?oArtifactCreation ACQUIRED! Now I'm a bit torn, between trying again on the Sexy Swimsuit, or work the Shadow Cloak... Knowing the RNG, if I enchant the Shadow Cloak, I'll find Luthien right afterwards, and if I don't, I'll never find a good cloak.

48 Uniques left, not counting the Dungeon masters, with Unicorn and Bahamut being the only real threats. Still not seeing a good way to take down the Unicorn... he both Disintegrates, and also Summons, and also drains SP with touch.

Took down Oberon without using ANY resources! Needed to teleport once to recover, but that was it. The "Clear Mind" Class power of Forcetrainers is, IMO, THE best Class power out there.

The second artifact I created pretty much sucked, but it did finally give me another useful high resist (Sounds), which FINALLY allows me to ditch the RSound ring and use my RoSpeed (+14). (Note, the coincidence/luck level of this isn't actually that high... a random RNexus would have worked better, because then I could swap Shiva's for Thror, and pick up the +3 CON).

Well, I took down the Serpent using only 3 ?o*Destruction* and 1 !oRestoreMana (see screenshots). Decided to TeleportLevel out rather than risk death at the the hands of the various Cyberdemons/Nightwalkers/Archliches/GWoPs running around... and forgot to pick up the Mighty Hammer... ah well. I decided to permanently destory the Massive Iron Crown I did pick up though.

Not quite ready to retire yet... I think I'll have a go at the Spawning Pits quest, Mars ^^

Congratulations!!! Was the final battle even remotely tough? I mean, you went down there with *no* healing, *healing* or life? My last monk to win had a staggeringly easy time of it ... Not sure how beneficial all that stunning from martial arts might actually be!

Yes, I guess I copied you 2 for 2 :-) But you made both characters seem so interesting I could not resist, especially with the ForceTrainer as I have never played one before. And I'm still not very close to done you know! I'll probably try to wrap things up this weekend, and then I'll see what new interesting character you have going so I can sponge ideas off you :-)

I'll list what I haven't won in Hengband, and the list starts with both classes you mention:
[1] Ranger (Is Mighty Spectre to munchkin-esque?)
[2] Paladin (Thinking Mighty Sprite)
[3] Warrior-Mage (Never tried one ... Arcane/Craft seems interesting)
[4] Tourist (No thanks!)
[5] Imitator (Never tried ...)
[6] Beastmaster (Lost a good one once ... still too sad to try again :-0)
[7] Magic-Eater (Never tried ...)
[8] Bard (Tried once ... did not get far)
[9] Red-Mage (Never tried ...)
[10] Blue-Mage (Never tried ...)
[11] Mage (Only played 1 in heng)

Maybe a list of classes I've actually won would be shorter? (No, 15 classes won). I left ForceTrainer off both lists since the book is still out on that one ... I'd be willing to do any off that list, save possibly the Tourist, as I don't think that would be very fun for me. But I am trying to limit my play time, so it'll be atleast until this weekend before I can fire up a new guy.

I'll just wait to see what you play next ;-)

VICTORY!

Final thoughts on this build:

-----

Sexy:

+1 to all stats is nice in the beginning for grabbing extra blows, and the bonuses to Saving Throw, Device, Fighting, and Bows ability are very useful.

Aggravation hurts A LOT in the mid-game--you'll die at least twice as often unless you tread very carefully, in which case you'll just take twice as long real time. Most quests are also made much more difficult.

In the late-game, aggravation can actually be useful, in pulling monsters to you. Also, the Sexy Swimsuit is a very awesome armor, which is made even more awesome with an ?oArtifactCreation and a little luck. Combined with the +1 to all stats from the personality, it's a total of +5 to all stats. Compared to lazy, which also gives +5 to all stats after you find all three Lazy artifacts.

Conclusion: Sexy changes the gameplay substantially, making early and end game easier, but making mid-game very annoying.

-----

Human:

Completely worthless, and I don't see why anyone would choose this other than aesthetic (Rei was a human!) or bragging rights. Really, compared to Dunadan which gives +2 to all stats, or any other race with intrinsic high-resists (or even SeeInvis!), you really miss out with Human. And the lack of extra XP requirements is really not that much, since you'll still have it from the class. I think Humans should get an additional -40% to experience requirments or so for it to be "competitive"

-----

Forcetrainers:

By far one of the most powerful classes, and one of the most self-sustaining ones. Clear Mind gives you 5 SP per player turn, which amounts to about 10X normal SP regeneration rate at any decent speed--this allows to you fight-and-teleport, and actually hope to accumulate damage on the opponent. Combined with aggravation that lures the enemies to you as it's wounded, it can be timed almost perfectly that the Serpent reaches you just as you top up on SP.

They also have several very nice class abilities. Magic Resistance is a staple spell that should always be activated, and is used even at the very end. Improve Force will increase your melee damage substantially for several turns. Shock Power is great for mid-level fights against non-summoners. Dispel Magic is great against Angels. And last but certainly not least, Light Speed makes any battle much safer by drastically reducing the chances of opponents double-moving you.

The various attack spells, however, are kind of gimpy. Exploding Frame is fire damage, which gets resisted by just about everything. Super Kamehameha does expected 280 damage at clvl 50 without boosts, and about 800 damage at clvl 50 with 3 boosts (or 4 turns). You really can do much better by either meleeing or even shooting arrows with a good bow.

Finally, they get the Monkish ability to stun with melee, which makes the battle with Oberon incredibly easier, since he will fail to Dispel Magic and Teleport a substantial fraction of the time.

All in all, a great class... certainly one of the strongest.

-----

Nature:

Nature provides the best Healing spell in the game except for Life Priests and Life High-Mages. For everyone else, True Healing will never be reliable, and Healing only does 350, compared to Herbal Healing's 500. However, Herbal Healing is acquired VERY late, and only gets reliable around clvl 50... before that you have Cure Wounded and Poison for 2D8 healing, for 9 SP, which is pretty much useless.

Stone Wall is one of the greatest spells out there, since it's the only one that allows you to shape the dungeon as you like it... while Destruction is nice, it can't make you perfect zig-zag tunnels to melee one-on-one with.

Resist Elements is a great early game spell that cannot be ignored. With it, I was able to survive without RBase until Angband 49!

The fourth book, however, is nearly useless... only Call Sunlight is useful.

All in all, Nature is a kind of like Sexy... it provides great early game boost and great late game boosts, but tends to make your mid-game insanely hard.

That's all for now. Cheers,

Dave

Lol, like I mentioned on the screenshot, it was meant to be a scouting run, not the final battle. I was planning on seeing how tough it was (i.e. whether I'd need to scum for potions), and then ?oTeleportLevelling out when things get icky. When I took down more than a star on the Serpent without really any damage though (i.e. when the "start" screen was taken), I decided I'd go for it. After all, I still have those ?oTeleportLevel if things get too nasty. It really wasn't dangerous at all... I had surprisingly few fails on the Herbal Healing, teleported whenever SP was low (but always when HP was high), and Destructed Cyberdemons and Archliches and Wyrms when they started filling up the screen (making sure Serpent was out of range).

It was helped by the fact that Morgoth doesn't resist Teleportation.

---

I'm still a bit shy about Paladin... but Ranger sounds fun and powerful. I don't mind waiting a few days for you to win your Forcetrainer (I'm pretty sure you will... Forcetrainers are so powerful in the endgame).

Of your list, I've played Tourist, Warrior-Mage, and Mage. I started Red Mage, but I got depressed that it really had nothing to look forward to. I'd be most interested in playing Blue Mage, Beastmaster, Magic-Eater, or Ranger.

How masochistic are you feeling? Want to go for Nightmare mode? It'll be made doubly hard since there isn't any spoilers for what Nightmare Mode actually does... ^^

Wow, congrats, Dave! Way to show that Serpent who's the boss!

Humans do indeed suck, though Hengband's personality system does take the edge off it (Hengband doesn't have a truly gimped starting option like Hermit Yeeks in ToME). Still, they're clearly the worst race (Yeeks at least get some bonus resists). I'm currently working on a Human mage and its extremely slow going.

Hmmmm ... I simply grepped the source code for Nightmare and it sounds pretty bad! I can provide details if desired, but perhaps a couple test characters would give a better feel. Just be careful around midnight ;-)

Ok, I tried a couple test characters under Nightmare mode, and decided to abandon that.

Absolutely *everything* is hasted! That immediately already rules out very many race/class/personality combos in the early-game (i.e. anything with Sexy, anything with puny HP like Sorcs, etc).

I figured, well, ok, let's try a combo of three things I generally like: Lucky Shadow-Fairy Forcetrainer. The massive bonuses to Stealth (2+6+4 = 12 base stealth!) should help carry me through undetected, RIGHT? No way. Absolutely everything was awake, despite the Superb starting Stealth, enough to make me believe that it's a feature of Nightmare.

Upon the first midnight, the GHB appeared. Somehow I think I lucked out... my guess is that it's an AFC?

Ok, back to normal games for now, until I get much much better at Heng... Started up Beryl, the Nimble Beastman Ranger (Nature, Trump). I'll try to be patient and not play it anymore until you finish up Jedi though (hurry up! :-P)
