I'm uploading this guy early because I think the class is interesting enough to get a little press.

Bullseye inherited his name from a previous Archer attempt, inspired by a recent Ladder character. Archery got boring after awhile though, and he died stupidly.

Forcetrainers get a few cool abilities, the problem is you have to survive to level 44 to enjoy them. The first comes at 38, which gives you a pretty powerful mana beam attack. It does around 29d15 or so damage, costs 42 or so spell points, which is all fine and good, except then you figure in the
Forcetrainer's magnify force spell, which pretty much multiplies spell damage for one good shot. Basically what you get is a beam spell that can nail monsters for up to 1500 or so damage after 3 good boosts. And that's at only level 38. :)

The other nice spell they get is Light Speed. This little wonder temporarily gives you 99 speed. While it sounds like you'd have it made, I've still had some of the fastest uniques get some of those trademark Hengband extra moves on me. But overall it's pretty nice to see this number in your speed column. Costs around 60 or 70 spell points, and doesn't last too long, but it's a nice accompaniment with that mana beam/boosting attack. Spells SHOULD take a chunk of change off of a monster every time you hit them with them.

This guy's equipment has been nothing to brag about so far, but at least I'm finally getting my spell fail rates down (the mana beam is 3% now, lightspeed around 12%). Tried the shambler while wielding an immunity to electricity weapon, but didn't take into account that it made my spell fail rates go up higher (forcetrainers are like monks in that they can only use a few weapons). This is the Arena, by the way. What happened was I wasted a ton of spell points just trying to cast light speed (spell fail was over 50+ at the time), and what little I had left after it worked wasn't enough to beat down the Shambler. He killed my arena guy with his melee attacks. ...lame.

I'm never patient enough to wait for Arena fights. At least I've managed to collect all the Wanted corpses so far without losing any (I usually manage to lose at least one to Logrus or some other attack).

Anyway, just wanted to advertise one of these guys before I screwed up and died without a character dump. I'll upload again if anything interesting happens... maybe at level 50 and give you some damage #s.

The only danger with multiplying force powers is that around 3 or more, they sometimes explode in your face. So far this has done around 200-300 damage, offhand. So you can't get too greedy for multiplying damage.

Nature's a nice school now that I'm at 40+ and can cast Herbal Healing (500 hit points). Fail rate is still significant though (29% or so).

Well, got to play in spurts a few times today. He's 49th now, and with 3 boosts
to that mana ray spell, it does 105d15 damage (only good for one shot, then another 3 wasted turns to beef it up again). Still, loads of fun just blasting uniques with a big cannon.

Haven't had any real interesting fights, though some Nazgul and other nether breathers have knocked me down pretty low with the occasional nether blast. Herbal Healing is down to a 4% fail (500 hit point heal) and light speed is 6% or so. Found the Palantir, which is a nice item, for its +3 wis boost, telepathy, and a very nice feature: activate for unique list on level. Makes diving much more efficient. :)

Hopefully I'll have some time to play a bit tomorrow, and I'll keep updating here with significant changes.

Didn't get a lot of playing time in tonight, but enough to get 50th. Figured I'd better upload this before another stupid death. :)

Fiddled with equipment a little... took a minor hit on fail rates/spell points for more hit points and another attack. Only missing nether now instead of nether and shards. Nothing else real remarkable.

You're just nuts not using nether ring instead of sound dont some nether rings (or maybe all) have hold life too.

Killed the Norsa not long ago, which was significant for the nice suit of armor it dropped. Shiva's Avatar! This gave me a nice source of hold life, sustain stats, etc. And of course the +1 attack. Also found Dor-whatever the nice warrior helm, which I'm using for the moment. Still can't quite finagle my equipment to get resist nether, but with 900 hits, a 4% 500 heal spell, a staff of healing and rod, I haven't needed to dip into potions for some time.

Will probably get bored and dive to my doom soon. Having fun though.

Well, I knew it. This guy had stupid death marked on his forehead from the beginning. :)

Was fighting Azrael on a quest level at 3800'. I let Azrael's summoned angel entourage get a little big (maybe 4 of them), and one of them decided to hit me with a dispel magic spell.

99 speed became 12. Azrael breathed nether, dropping me from 900+ hits to 300, some Ethereal Dragon hit me for another 150 or so with confusion, then Azrael breathed mana and that was that.

A few seconds of tactical carelessness is all it takes. That guy was on a tear too.

Time for another long break. :)

(oh, and as usual, I bypassed the final character dump scrolling through all the death messages. Someone really should make that harder to do.)

Well skimping on resistances to increase damage, speed or whatever always hits you back. There are so many monsters with nether attacks though i cant see why you wouldnt use resist nether instead of sound.

Only few uniques and few dragons use sound attacks (fuck the hounds)and even those arent so deadly:

Breath nether
A nether breath whose damage is the caster's HP/6. However, the damage is 550 or less.

Breath sound
A sound breath whose damage is the caster's HP/6. However, the damage is 450 or less.

And on top of the monster distribution issue there are all those monster who cast nether bolts which can really add up after few greater undead summons.

Thanks for the comments. Turns out your earlier suggestion might have saved my character (or not).

My reasoning for choosing sound over nether: lack of sound leads to stunning. Stunning for a mostly-caster type is bad news (raises fail rates significantly). And of course there's the knock-out chance.

I also hate losing potions to sound breathers. *Healing* and the like seem rare enough in Heng, and it kills me when a vibration hound breathes sound and one of them disappears.

Nether resistance, as I recall from some post or another way back when, doesn't behave the same way as other resistances when it comes to damage reduction. Certainly it reduces it, but it doesn't drop it down to simply 1/3rd like other resists do. Please use the source to correct me if I'm wrong about that.

The only big plus with nether resist, aside from dropping Azrael's damage a few hundred hits, is not taking 300 damage or so from a nether storm. And of course getting hold life (but that lucky suit of armor I'd recently found gave me that).

I probably should have dropped the Holy Might arrows and just carried a nether ring around as a swap item for fights like this last one. And I definitely should have limited Azrael's access to summons (fought him in the entranceway of a big room, and didn't teleport away when he had about 4-5 angels around him, including at least one seraph
Oh well. Another time. :)

Hmm actually you are inccorrect on that nether res protects better than sound res 6/(7+d4) vs 5/(7+d4), however i thought sound res wouldnt help stuns from other sources but it does... ie vs stuns from plasma, water, rockets(force and gravity).

I once lost a level 50 samurai because i didnt know you could get knocked out. Was killing a pack of plasma hounds with the sam area attack.
