Woo-hoo! Another new class winner. I've had a couple 50th level force trainers before, and one of them was even Lazy, but never managed to make it all the way. This is also my first character ever to kill all three Lazy artifact guardians.

The battle against the Unicorn, was, as
expected, quite epic. I only used a weapon
at the very end of the game. Against the
Unicorn, I mostly tried blasting him with
3x boosted mana ray class spells
(K-something or another), which would do
up to 1500 damage (or as low as 150 dmg).
I started the battle with something like 16
mana restore potions and I used them all.
The Unicorn still had tons of hits left.
His time attacks would lower my stats, which
made melee a last option. Well, it so
happened I had him down to 4 stars, and
he drained my last bit of mana. This was
a big problem because I decided I wouldn't
carry any scrolls of teleportation, and my
phase doors were all wasted from the
protracted battle. So, with no way of
escaping (Crusade gives me the portal
spell, which is useless with 0 mana) I
decided: him or me.

I was at 99 speed, thanks to the Light Speed
forcetrainer power. This surprisingly
amounts to just one extra move every once
in awhile against the Unicorn. Sometimes
he STILL double moved on me. And it
wouldn't last for long. So I just meleed
him. Every time my hits got to under 600,
I drank a *Healing*. I had about 12 to
start. Went down to my last couple
of them, but I finished him off. Got
the Robes! Yeah!

The Serpent was a major pain. Just wasn't
doing enough damage to him. And he of
course summoned Morgoth (and everything
else). Liberal use of the Crusade spell
for *Destruction* kept me going. Healing
mana (class power) at every chance after
every teleport. Morgoth I'd teleport away
to get some distance between him and the
Serpent, then I'd teleport to him, and finished
him off. Yumi! Hurray! With a little extra
power thanks to that weapon, I finally
decided to beat on the Serpent. Strategy
was to blast him with a triple charge mana
ray, then melee until he dropped me
below 600, then teleport. Kept this up
and finally just roughed it out for the
last couple stars. Bye Serpent!

Now I wanted the Plain Gold Ring. He'd
appeared once but I destructed him. So
I went hunting. Went to the near bottom
of *Hell* (a winner dungeon) and found
him thankfullly near a corner. Boosted up
my speed, cast various other buff spells,
and meleed. Oh, I forgot to mention one
thing. I wore the Serpent Crown without
IDing it, forgetting not only its permacurse,
but that it PREVENTS TELEPORT! ...ack.
So prepared again with liberal use of
Destruction, I tried meleeing Mr. Gold Ring
to death.

This guy died a lot faster than the others,
(stunning bonuses from unarmed attacks
really helped in all of my big unique fights)
and I fairly liberally used Healings and
*Healings* which were easily to procure on
the Hell levels (provided you can *Destruct*
any major opposition).

Really enjoyed the Holy Word/teleport
combo of Crusade. Stronger heal would
have been nice, but 100 hit points a time
with Holy Word did the trick. And the
spell fail penalties of Laziness were mostly
overcome by level 50 and high stats.

I was surprised how much of a nice exp
boost the Ring gives you (something like
10 million). And I was looking all over
for the zombified Serpent of Chaos at the
bottom of Hell, but after 5-6 looks he never
showed up. So I'm bored, but not quite
ready to retire this guy. Anyone know
just how rare this zomibifed Serpent is?
I highly doubt I'll be able to beat him without
teleport, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

Only major class that I like playing, that
I haven't gotten a win yet with, is a magic-
eater. Sometime in the future I'll give that
one a shot... might be tempted to try Lazy
again for the nice artifacts.

All I can say is "Holy burger!"

I've always shied away from Forcetrainers, because there is enough of the power gamer in me to feel the Force trainer is merely a watered-down Monk. The force powers simply did not seem to match the sheer melee power of a barehanded monk in combo with any of the spell realms.

So I congratulate you (for what, the 4th or 5th time now?) for a fine win, especially against the Plain Gold Ring!

And just wondering...have you beat Heng with a Mirror-master yet? I find them excruciatingly difficult somehow. I think it's a patience issue, though ;)

Best,

Victor

Congrats! I still have to try a force trainer myself but they seem interesting too. The zombified Serpent is as far as I know *not* a unique, and native to dlev 127. You'd probably meet it eventually ;).

Just wondering, did you ever meet/kill a Cyber angel daemon lich thing (or whatever its name is, at least it got all resists and spells according to the beastmaster), and if so is it hard to kill?

Speaking from my one and only encounter with the Cyber Angel Daemon Lich Wyrm Hell Quylthulg thing, it was actually pretty easy, since it does EVERYTHING any monster can do, including fear, cure light wounds, and magic missile. It spent most of its time doing useless things while I tossed it against the wall a few times and ground it into the dungeon floor.

It's funny, when I view my dump from the editor on this site, my
comments look just fine, but when I view the actual post, the
spacing is all funny. Guess I have to insert carriage returns.

Thanks for the congrats. Lessee... sorcerer, blue-mage, ninja,
berserker, force-trainer, I think that's it unless I'm forgetting
someone. Never tried the mirror-master... the need to place
all those mirrors sounded like too much of a hassle, and
nothing in the spell damage excited me from the spoiler site.

Force trainers are fun really only at level 50, or once they
can cast Light Speed and that mana laser beam reliably. You're
right as far as the comparison of damage per round goes. They
aren't as good as monks or berserkers as far as that goes. One
other nice ability is Dispel Magic. Nothing like seeing, "Gabriel
casts Globe of Invulernability" and a round later, "Gabriel is
no longer Invulnerable." Quite satisfying.

I think Mars is right about the zombified serpent not being a
unique. That's why I haven't found one, as I was only looking
for uniques. Doesn't seem worth trying to fight it then. And
the Cyber thing never showed up, I did fight him with some
other character but I'm not sure I've ever killed him. I know
I got him real closer with a berserker or some such, but with
his ability to cast other spells that aren't so nasty, he's probably
much easier compared to the last few nasty uniques.

As for the 1.7.0 version, it's a CVS compile, and they haven't
uploaded anything new to the CVS in quite a few months.
The only big change in 1.7.0 besides maybe a new item or two
is level feelings that change dynamically. This might even be
a debugging feature for all I know. But it's nice. At least you
know when you've found that strangely lucky item, or special
item, etc. Saves a little time.

I could play a little longer to get the highest score, but I'm really
not into the game for that. Maybe it'd be worth scumming for
that other unique. There's only 5 or 6 unique left, and no one
really worth mentioning, except maybe Azazoth who I never
got to fight one on one, but would finish pretty easily with
those special artifacts now.

Wish this game still got continuous development. So many neat
new things, which sadly aren't so new any more thanks to a
lot of play the past year or two.

Very nice indeed, congrats!
Hmm... did you use lots of "crusade"? it used to be most of the time my only buff w/ paladin... but then i had very good melee.

Ack. Hopefully Pav can delete
those two double posts. Sorry.

Not sure if you're asking me
about the spell realm Crusade
in general, or the specific
Crusade spell. If it's the
former, I used Orb of
Draining for a bit, until I got
the forcetrainer mana ray
power (level 37), portal
throughout the game,
the destruction spell (in
the 4th book), and Holy
Word in abundance (heals
you 100, and does up to 300
damage to all evil monsters).
I used it mostly for healing
later in the game. Also
loved Protection from Evil.

The Crusade spell I never
really bothered casting,
mostly because it inhibited
me from using my mana
regenerating class power.
That was pretty key to
my success... get low on
spell points, teleport, then
regen mana until I either
had a decent amount again,
or some really mean bad
guy found me, and I'd
either attack with what I
had, or teleport away to get still
more mana.

So where can someone get 1.7.0? And is there any chance of anyone developing further from there?

The only way to play 1.7.0 is to compile it yourself. Here's a pointer to the Heng CVS site.

http://cvs.sourceforge.jp/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/hengband/Hengband/

From there, click on "make tarball" which will zip the whole thing up for you. Winzip or other such programs can handle tarballs. Then you just have to know how to compile a version for your system.

As for continued development, the last change was some really minor thing to one file 4 weeks ago, and before that, it's been ages. Almost feels like abandonware, given the state of the website and the Yahoo newsgroup (which hasn't received a developer post in over a year).
