Well, I tried a Sexy version of this character, but there were just too many louses and other breeders in the world, so she committed suicide in frustration.

Decided to try a more normal personality. I ignored fighting altogether until the Sewer. I was in trouble, with blue icky things breeding out of control and stupid me, I forgot to buy any potions of CSW. Went into the sewer at CL15. Upon CL17, thanks to 100 or so undead masses, I gained my second attack, and promptly started fighting the blue ickys with the help of magic resistance. That did the trick, and the final icky count was 133. Almost quit on the quest at one point ;-) To reward myself, I killed undead masses until CL20, which is where I am now.

Hey, you might want to read my Quickstart guide under Rei if you're interested in trying a sexy character.. I figure, if I can consistently get to clvl 20 with a Sexy Human, I've got the early-game down. I still hate the mid-game though.

Slow going so far. Kept my depth at DL20 for a couple hours until I made CL25, gaining necessary free action. I then did the Mimic's Treasure for See Invisible ... Its taken over 3 hours to get this far.

But the Black Market just stocked 4 staves of speed ... that should help speed things along ;-) However, I'm not much of a fighter, and using Force offensively at the moment is a bit weak. More patience is required, it seems ...

On 24.8.2005 22:22 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
You need to "Improve Force" before the Force becomes powerful offensively! I usually improve 2-3 times, before firing off Large Force Balls; it's actually pretty good.

Your DEX looks pretty terrible though, for a Forcetrainer. Especially since you're using Martial Arts--STR almost doesn't matter at all for damage.

On 24.8.2005 22:36 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
Yes, I know about "Improve Force". Still pretty weak at the moment as the only long distance offence is the Large Force Ball, which has a 30% fail rate. Nearly intolerable, as I must have failed at an 80% clip when dispatching Rich the Thief. And if you pump up and then fail to cast, you lose the pump ...

Can't do much about DEX though, except to choose it at CL30. If random stat rolls are going in other directions, not much you can do about it ... Perhaps I should have picked DEX at CL10 and 20? OK, things are starting to look a little bit better. Found my first DEX potion about 5 hours into the game. But more importantly, two very nice rand arts have shown up, the last one in the town of all places. And I was about to blow all my gold on a potion of STR ;-)

I think it will be CL30 before my 3rd attack, though ... Patience. I think having a high CON is more important for survivability ...

BTW, you are right about the large force ball ... about 200hp of damage isn't that bad. I just need a decent Amulet of Wisdom to get the fail rate down a bit more.

OK, here is a quick blurb on how I use towns to support my playstyle. I do not consider this to be town scumming ... just making sure my character gets a normal amount of sleep every night!

[1] I adventure during the daytime, from 6:00am to about 5:30pm, when I notice it is starting to get dark.
[2] I then teleport to all 4 towns, checking the Black Market and the Armoury for anything useful. I might hit other stores to stock up on CCW or Restore Life or something else useful as well.
[3] At the 4th town, I then wait for darkness to fall, and then sleep for a full 12 hours (a little more than I get in real life ... but not much ;-).
[4] I then wake up and reverse the town jumping, checking all 4 towns again for goodies.
[5] I then recall back to Angband for more adventuring.

I do use the Autoscummer to help generate cash more quickly, though this is not really required if you have a bit more patience than I do. Also, I generally only do these steps when I have enough gold to buy something useful. Preferably, at least 120,000 gp for a stat potion. This is generally good for Staves of Speed if you are lucky, Potions of Speed, Potions of Healing and perhaps *Healing*, Potions of Resist Heat and Cold (if required for your class), Potions of Resistance, stat potions, and perhaps, if you are really lucky, +4 speed random artifacts ;-) My characters might buy 20-30 healing potions during the course of the game, and this can be quite helpful.

Now this does mean that my day count will be very high, but that does not bother me. Come on, if you take 60 days to win the game, that is a mere 2 months. Quite a short time if you consider the amazing transformation that you character undergoes! From fumbling Novice to Grand Master in a mere 2 months? Amazing!!

Turned off the scummer and the next level had Accelerator and the 3rd Bard book. Go figure ;-) But at long last, I have made CL30. Mario dropped Boromir, and I am starting to become proficient in melee, thanks in part to a third attack. Improve Force does also improve your melee damage, as this dump shows. I'll probably give the DL38 quest a go now and then hang out at that level until I can resist poison. Probably at CL35 :-)

Hm... OK, I see. Yeah, usually I don't do that, but I don't really have any moral objections against it. Usually for me, I just check all the towns, buy interesting goodies, and if one BM has not too many items and nothing above 10k, I buy it out, and get the manual restock (and dent my cash reserves in the process).

I usually kill a good 600 or so magma/quartz/granite veins in the mid-levels just for pure-level up purposes, so I'm usually not strapped for cash, but apparently my method of spending it on the BM isn't as good as yours --guess I'll try that on my next character. ^^

Well, the boots are mine :-) Thror is nice, but weighs in at a hefty 8lbs while Shivas Avatar, a mere 2lbs.

The quest went about average, except that I was not very stealthy and had next to no detection. Judge Fear was a random monster, as were a whole bunch of Chaos Tiles. The Its were easy and the Gachapins were hard. Often, I was facing 8 or 9 hydras at once, with 3 adjacent, and of the 7, 9 or 11 headed variety. Thank goodness for resist heat and cold ;-)

The take: Hammerhand, a staple; Hithlomir, can't wear at the moment; Anarion and a +2 speed crossbow. I went in with poison resistance from my Long Bow of Extra Might, but now that I wear the boots, I don't dare risk disenchantment, especially with RPois coming next level anyway.

So here I am, all pumped up on the Force :-) 190 damage on 3 attacks is my normal stature ... And check out my DEX now! Not Bad!

On 27.8.2005 22:13 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
You probably already noticed this, but the Force does NOT actually dissipate immediately if you're using it to melee... it drops one level at a time. So, going up against a tough monster, it's actually a pretty good idea to pump up to 5 Improve Forces and then melee, because you'd have improved damage for 5 turns.

Unfortunately, Improve Force does seem to cost a lot more as you continue to pump it, and fail rates also rise substantially.

Costs so far that I've charted:

Improves-TotalCost-MarginalCost
0 0 0
1 5 5
2 11 6
3 20 9
4 39 19
5 65 26

(CL36 : Old Castle)
Before the Old Castle quest, I did something I really should not have ... and that is to play around with potions of New Life. But this time it really worked to my advantage. Here is the transformation:
STR: 18/100 -> 18/80 ... I can live with this
INT: ?? -> 18/90
WIS: 18/70 -> 18/120 ... *HUGE* This is how I talked myself into this in the first place. I'd like to be able to cast Light Speed, thank you very much ;-)
DEX: 18/120 -> 18/110 ... a modest decline
CON: 18/90 -> 18/120 ... *WOW* Wasn't expecting this, but nice.
CHR: 18/120 -> 18/80 ... He He, about time I was uglier than average!
Life Rating: 110% -> 102%.

Probably one of my best transformations ever, and it occurred on !NewLife #2 out of 3.

Now, on to the Castle. I tired of being so blind, and as I pushed my depth deeper and deeper, it became apparent that my inability to see monsters coming was going to be my demise. And what, Telepathy is a guaranteed gift for this class? Nice. So I loaded up to sell out on the Old Castle quest. Teleported until I landed next to the Wall Monsters, and I quickly killed them as they just started to wake (Very Good stealth is not really very good ;-). Next came the Dracolich. Piece of cake. Hmmm, maybe this character is more powerful than I thought. Worked my way through the Titans, Lesser and Greater that were surprisingly tame. I think I took maybe 20 pts of damage total from all 4, as they were immediately stunned, and certainly never allowed to summon. Full of confidence, the Iron Lich went next. It even managed to summon another Iron Lich who summoned a Spectral Tyrannosaurus. OK, Teleport and setup better position, and both died readily. Mopped up the rest and the Palantir is mine :-)

Now, I think it might be time for the Dragon's Lair ... Hopefully, I am not too overconfident after the Castle!

I find myself burrowing into walls and letting monsters come to me, and trying to time when to start pumping the force. I'm not very good at it yet, but Telepathy should now help. If I were stealthier, I'd walk up to sleeping monsters, stand right next to them, pump x4 and then give them a wake up call to remember ;-)

I decided to go with the extra attack, which, rather oddly, is the only such ring I have found so far. +2 would be awesome and I really want to finish the game on a +3 ring of extra attacks. Sure Improve Force is nice, it just seems that it wears off *long* before most tough battles are over. And since I am all about position when I play, it is not like I am going to blink just so I can Improve Force some more.

I think I will push deeper in R'lyeh in hopes for the last life book without risking the final random quest. 3 uniques to go before I make my helmet into an artifact :-)

My take on ForceTrainers? They are powerful, but less so than monks. +99 speed is cool, but only marginally better than +43 speed (which is what I ended up at for the final battle). Magic Resistance is handy for Amberites and Hand of Doom monsters. Dispel Magic will come in handy 3 or 4 times throughout the game. Super Kamehameha is nice when pumped, but normal melee is better (except maybe against the 350AC Echizen ...). Improve Force is off course very nice, especially since it enhances your damage and your probability for critical hits. I've never seen quite so many *SUPERB* hits ... something that is normally only available if wielding Grond, I think. And of course, Life magic is awesome in the end game. The most powerful spell is Ultimate Resistance, but I never found the 4th book, and got tired of waiting.

The final battle had the normal array of close calls, including one trip down to 150 hp. Sauron was always lurking nearby, and I could never tell if he could LoS abuse me for a Mana Storm which could have been deadly, seeing as I was toe to toe with the biggest J ever to walk the earth. *Destructed*, re-summoned, *Destructed*, re-summoned. Well, I suppose Morgoth is worse ;-)
