Okay, my own beastmaster post now.
(and this is my first post here too! I normally play Japanese version Hengband)

Just charmed a hunting hawk and "fed" him enough, and he makes a good ride now.
But anyway this class/race/character combo is a bit weak at the start-up, and maybe I die soon!

now I've found some decent stuff in the forest.

found the long bow of Bard, the helm of Thengel and Thalkettoth all at once in a "Miniature Cell" vault there, but a nether wraith and Judge Fear and a dracolisk were no joke.
so I used "Trump Kamikaze" from behind trees and lure them out. no one there could catch me on the great eagle!
(still, dracolisk nealy instakilled me with nether breath, using LOS trick.)

by the way, probably I could kill Judge Fear if I had a staff of starlight with me, but anyway getting too greedy is no good...

So, I want to capture another better mount, but law drakes seems to be not so common....

(Okay, that was also my mistake and I'll pass over that, my friend.)
Anyway I've got Sting without trouble but resistance not covered and I think I cannot use it now.

Searching for better equipment, went to 38th floor, and killed Chaugnar Faugn.
I don't think he was an easy opponent, but a GWoL before the Cloning Pits is just absurdly powerful and defeated it without a slightest hint of trouble, but nothing remarkable was found there.

I'm now searching around in the castle but things are getting really harder these days!

*Awesome* GWoL are so good, and you managed to get one very early. Impressive.

Is it summoning other GWoL at your depth? I usually get one in the Dragon's Lair, and there, it summons others of its kind non-stop. Just need to scum for a good speed wyrm :-)

in the castle I found the magnificent mithril mail of Lohengrin, one of the best Armors in Hengband!

My constitution is not good enough but I think I can do the Cloning Pits quest.

Now, I was carefully thinking what to bring, and suddenly realized that I don't have the Stone of Lore!
Think I'm going anyway...

Found the Stone of Lore there too, but that was a little too late.
Anyway the boots of Shiva's Avatar is very nice.

The castle is too dangerous now at this depth, (with this low HP monsters like great hell wyrms can cause instakill!) so I'm descending Angband now.
Charon was nothing against the GWoL and the King Bard's bow, and Nyogtha was blasted severely with the staff of starlight and easily killed.
And, from the remains of Nyogtha I found the Slayer! Though I just can't use it now...what a pity!

Anyway I have killed Ungoliant and Atrach-Nacha there.
And do you ask how? Of course I didn't melee them!
(By the way, the Witch-King is way too dangerous to fight with this low HP, and I just ignored him.)

Enjoying your posted progressions. Never knew just how valuable Starlight was in Heng.

Kind of curious, if you know, whatever happened to Hengband development? It seems to have fizzled out over the past year or so.

Are there other Japanese variants which are currently, actively maintained? Heng is neat for the sheer amount of new stuff in it, and the balance it somehow manages to maintain. Wondering if there's anything else out there that fits that bill, or if there's anything to look forward to in a new version. Thanks. (I play a compiled CVS version myself of 1.7.0.)

On 6.7.2005 10:23 wrote:
>Kind of curious, if you know, whatever happened to Hengband development?

I don't know much about it, but maybe the developers are just too busy, or not interested in the game anymore, or have run out of idea, or maybe satisfied with the current version, or because Hengband has too many things and is complecated already it's very hard for anyone to make it more interesting, so development is halt now, I suppose.
(Or all of the above is the reason?)
There are many Hengband players in Japan, and some of them are capable of tapping into develpoment, but no one seems to do that kind of hard and unrewarding work!
(Lack of credible and sure infomation and communication seems to be the major problem to me. Or Just me?)

>Are there other Japanese variants which are currently, actively maintained?

Hmm, not really. Some variants based on ZAngband or Hengband is known, but I don't think they are sperior to Hengband.
One of them is called XAngband (because it is simplified and easier ZAngband? I don't know but formerly it was named as
Kantang-band, which means "easy-(hen)gband" in Japanese) and still maintained but not that active, if I say.

By the way, Japanese roguelike world is mainly centered at translation and fixing bugs (and playing the games of cource!),
and not so much at making variants, currently, at least.
I myself am helping translate GearHead, but the progression is
rather slow. I'd better stop playing Hengband, maybe? ;)

Now I think I can use the Slayer but the amulet of Sacred Knights and higher HP are more vaulable to me, so I will not change my armors here.
Still low on HP and double-move of a cyberdemon can possilbly cause instakill, and I should gain more HP somehow. (I severely need some more potions of new life, not that augmentation!)

Now I'm killing uniques around, including Amberites, if the circumstances look enough safe.
Killed the Witch-King and Vlad too! And, finally I have captured a lord of change with some credible speed (that was really tough work! I used two potions of healing on that fight), so the next target will be Draugluin or Fenris Wolf.

Any thoughts as to swapping out your lance for Slayer and Hammerhand for your Crown of Seeing? You should only lose 1 point of CON, but you'll keep the Resist Blindness as Slayer has that. Plus you may cast Telepathy until you find the Palantir.

And I am waiting what I need...

I've never thought that finding potions of new life is this hard...
In R'lyeh, I found another scroll of artifact creation, and a potion of augmentation and a rod of speed, and still not a single potion of new life appears!

I quit searching them in R'lyeh and went to the Mine, but couldn't find it there either.
So I am bored to search them and quaffed the one I've got from the hunters guild, and my stats got somewhat better, but still far from satisfacrory.
After all I continued seaching, and finally got one after 2 or 3 hours, quaffed it immidiately (thinking if the worse came to worst I'll rob Throndor) and this time my stats are good enough.
Now I think I am able to take on those high-end uniques finally!

By the way, what should I do with this scroll... create another crappy elven cloak, maybe?

Thanks for the tip on the staff of starlight. Used it on Thuringwethil and some elder vampires and it worked great. My only regret was not having a scroll of recharge.

Why not use those hoarded potions of augmentation to max you CON?

I wish I could do that but ?oAC doesn't work on rings, amulets, or light sources, (though you can create an artifact seeker bolt or an artifact rounded pebble, which will be totally useless!)

About the potions of Augmentation - I know it's foolish not to drink them now but, they are so rare, you know, and I just hesitate to do that!
I'll have another stat-gain at level 50, and potions of constitution are not that rare even in Hengband, and I think I can find them soon.

And finally made up my mind and charged ahead.

There was Pazuzu, Lord of Air.
Oh, it's you! I've completely forgot about your presence!
Defeated him quite easily (I think he's even weaker than a lord of change!) and nothing good he dropped in return.

No effective attributes other than "force", and that was pretty disappointing: this is of course powerful indeed, but it's hard to handle. If it were also "slay evil" branded (or anything preferable maybe), that'll be very useful for its extreme damage output...

Anyway I killed Abhoth and Great Cthulhu with this weapon, hoping they'll drop someting useful.
After all, although I had to use a few potions of restore mana, Great Cthulhu wasn't that great and Abhorth was down after just 10 turns or so.

I would use it ... Gosh, the One Ring means you can ride a Great Wyrm of Power. I'm not sure anything in Hengband gets better than that!!

I'd probably make sure I was immediately ready for the final battle first though. Kill all the uniques you can, capture a nice hasty GWoP (I'm sure you know an easy way to do this ...), and do any other prep work first. Then put on the ring and mount up :-)

Your right about the Good uniques ... but I usually do kill Bahamut and Nodens for the excellent drops. The unicorn, well ... sigh. I usually leave her alone ;-)

Finally killed Oberon, without using the ring. Indeed he was just nothing...
And he dropped the crown of Amber, which I will not use this time anyway.

I know the Serpent is a tough enemy, and I am now thinking how to defeat him...
Use summoning? Or hit him with Slayer or with rokets? Or maybe...

But I will not use the the ring this time.

And, I am now setting up for the (presumably) final battle. Potions, missles, rods and means to escape, I think I have enough...

The Serpent of Chaos is destroyed at last, mostly by those great wyrms.

Firstly I was head on against the Serpent, firing rockets/arrows and hitting with Slayer several times and teleport.
But since I am a skeleton, it's not a good idea to quaff potions of healing when the Serpent is next to me, and the rods of healing is not reliable at all (I assume the failure rate for the rods was 40% or so), and I am not a surprisingly good melee fighter in any way, so it wasn't a good idea to melee him to death, if not impossible.

Also I was just expecting my fenghuang's summonning, but that wasn't powerful at all to rely on eighter.
In addition to that I broke the wand of rocket eventually, so I changed my tactics here.

Teleported myself out far from the Serpent, and cast 'Summon Ancient Dragons' spell and here came a great wyrm of balance.
And then let it find nearby weak monsters and summon some more, and released the sky drake in the capture ball too...
When the Serpent came I make them attack all at once the Serpent, and typical seemingly uncontrollable summonnings followed,
but the Serpent wasn't able to summon good monsters, and I could cast the Demension Door spell, and the Serpent would chase me however distant I was, so actually controlling them was not as hard as it looked.
(and, what will be able to survive through legions of great wyrms?)

And cyberdemons he summoned! They would fire rockets, of course, but most of my wyrms were resistant to shard, while the Serpent himself was not - very helpful. Especially, the great wyrms of power were almost invulnerable to
everything, except one - earthquake attacks.

Repeated these things several times, and finally finished him with a seeker arrow of holy might.
By the way, I changed my steed back to the lord of change: fenghuang was not so good, at a savage and rushing battle like this, after all.

I've used lots of potions of mana, and scrolls of recharging for *destruction* and of course means of healing but nothing more than that.

Well, should I be retiring here this time?

Okay I retired the adventure and am here back in the graveyard.
Nullified the One Ring and the harmless ring is in the museum now.

By the way, I backed up the savedata just before retiring, which will be of use to do some other additional experiments, but that is just another story.

Anyway I think my purpose here is finely accomplished.
And I am now the first skeleton winner on the laddar!! ...And the very first skeleton, maybe?

Congrats, nice winner :).

How'd you "nullify" the ring? Scroll of mundanity? And I'm also curious what 'experiments' you have in mind for the savefile ;)

Well Done! I learned quite a bit from "watching" you play ...

Very well done! An awesome performance, Nameless. I belive you are indeed the first skeleton winner on .oook.

Thanks everyone! Hope you enjoyed.

As you can see, there are many ways to play and enjoy this game!
You know I never went to the Dragon' Lair, or didn't use the One Ring, but still winnable and that's fun.

Yes, I used the scroll of mundanity on the ring and it lost all of its power, although still absurdly expensive is the ring!

Other experiments are, like, let's see, can a beastmaster be victorious in the arena? And how? Or is a Mighty Hammer (Trump Weapon) useful?
Or, if I am able to get an artifact heavy lance, with slay evil and force branded and some extra attacks, how many turns needed to kill Morgoth? Or... you name it.
But I feel I did enough the game this time and I'd better seal the savefile for a while.

I was going to ask you why you were wielding a Great Hammer? Is there some hidden attribute that makes it desirable?

ps - I reallly enjoyed following your progress.

No, it's nothing more than amusement,
though it somehow is "sutable for riding" - oh, by the way this is not that ordinary "great hammer" you know.

Plus, its not a "great hammer" that he's wielding, its a "mighty hammer" and there's only one of them...

He nuked the 'Hammer' didn't he.....
