Insanely early post of my second attempt at Beastmaster. Elliot's comments about Chaos Warriors gaining stats quickly gave me the idea. I used a Beastman and rolled up till I started with the Chaos Patron mutation and to top it off he got Hionhurn - woohoo. He's only level 16 but he's been augmented 4 times.

With two hands he's got 4 attacks which is pretty handy at the moment. Even more handy is the Robe of Permancence he just picked up from his randome quest monster on Angband level 6 - Thanks Lagduf - I appreciate it.

Will try to be very careful with him - ie this one is not trundling off to the dragon caves to attempt some power levelling....

I recommend Hydras as rides. Start with 4 heads if you are able. My current Cavalry could not even manage this, and had to start with 2 heads :-(, but evolution is inevitable, and you hydra can grow into quite the ride if you are patient. For myself, I might duck down into the Dragon's Lair from time to time as a Beastmaster/Cavalry if I am looking for an AMHD, or some other such ride, but this is generally done once my mount has 11 heads and I have at least +5 speed ... so be careful!!

I got 'Spiral Wave' from the Tengu and the Deathswords quest and it's proving to be quite a handy weapon for the moment. I used it to forage around on the top level of the Anti-Magic Cave and a pack of Bloodletters dropped the Chaos Blade 6d5 with 'Slay Evil' on it so I used it to complete the Logrus Master Quest. After that I figured I should be able to do the 'Vault' quest and who do you think was in the Western room? That stupid Green Diinosaur 'Gachapin'. I could cover Chaos res with the handy Chaos Blade which I take as a spare weapon but at this stage I still don't have poison covered. I crossed my fingers and hoped that Sting was in one of th e other rooms and it was in the first one I tried (Eastern Room) - Whilst there I knocked off Hagen and got his spear as well and then got the hell out.

I just sold Hagen and Sting anyway - never going to use them.

Anyone know the best way to pick up a Heavy Lance? I'm desperate to see what one is like. Maybe I'll get one when I'm level 40 and I can trump brand it then.

oh well - back to lvl 40 of Magic Caves till I can cover Poison res then I'll hit the cloning pits.

Unbelievable - just hit character level 27 and Hionhurn augmented me again. The only bad thing he's got is the Moronic mutation - but it's not a real problem as he uses Charisma for spellcasting. I've got to remember to swap out my weapon and armour for level up though ( don't want 'Spiral Twirl' or Robe of Permanence to get basted... Forgot to last time and even thought it didn't happen I know that the RNG is just around the corner waiting to pounce...

Ok, I checked out "k_info.txt" and it tells that heavy lances starts to appear from dlevel 43, but they are somewhat rare. Looks like searching in the Anti-magic Cave is not a bad idea.

I didn't have haste monster at the start of the quest - after killing several annoying exploders I hit chlvl 29 which means I now can bump my speed to +11.

Don't think I'm going to be able to kiill him though. We're in a Mexican standoff. He keeps summoning the exploders and/or hitting me then teleporting away. I can never get more than one round of attacks on him which only takes off 1 star.

The only reason I took the quest early was because I figured my Robe of permanence would take care of the major problem fighting him (stat drain). I must admit the exploders slipped my mind.

The only other time I did this quest it was quite easy but that may've been coz I was using a level 35 Golem Weaponsmith using Stoneskin and Bull seemed to have trouble hitting me.

Anyone got any ideas?

I can't update his dump at the moment coz I'm at work. But basically the equipment listed here at chlvl 27 is what he's got (ok I've got a rod of frost bolts as well but I don't think that's going to make a difference). As mentioned above I can now haste my Hydra so I'm at +11 speed but that doesn't seem to be helping that much.

I hate failing quests so if anyone has any snazzy tricks I'd appreciate any help..

hmm maybe Trump Kamikaze and lots of pets or some combination thereof...

I had a brief attempt last night at Bull and had a slightly hairy moment where he summoned exploders twice and Beastlord ended up on 117hps from full health after all the explosions. He took the hint and got out of there.

After the Bull Gates fiasco Beastlord decided to explore the Castle. I didn't want to go any deeper in Angband without some of the higher resists. Currently on level 38' and using his Blade of Chaos of Slay Evil as he's maxxed his scimitar skill (Spiral Wave) and I figure he may well need to use the Blade of Chaos in the Cloning pits as it's his only source of res chaos at the moment.

On a brighter note he's picked up some elven armour with Res Poison and Shards which is pretty handy. This means he can start thinking about the cloning pits. The downside to using the Chaos Blade + Elven Armour is that it costs him 90hps ( 425 instead of 515) and he also loses res Nether/Disenchantment & Hold Life (Spiral Wave and Robe of Permanence respectively) + he loses the sustains of course. Currently in the castle he keeps them as hot spares as required.

At this stage I will wait till I hit chlvl 35 and then hit the cloning pits. Maybe he'll pick up some more useful items @Castle level 40 but even if he doesn't he should be ok by then to do it.

Will update his dump tonight.

Cloning Pits completed and no outstanding items to speak of ( well ok using hammerhand but that's not *outstanding*).

After cloning pits just pretyy much been hanging out on level 60 of the Dragon's Lair levelling and knocking off uniques when I think it's safe enough (Smaug, Fafner, Boty Belding, Lernean Hydra etc etc).

Been swapping between Ethereal Dragons and Arnie my slow (+7 speed) but tough steel dragon. Had several goes at trying to capture Law and/or Balance Drakes but I've been doing to much damage with Zanetsucken so I've decided to swap to Spiral Wave but even that is still splatting them before I can catch them...

I briefly visited the Mine and after a couple of hairy moments in the enclosed spaces I bailed out of there.

This character has now equalled the highest level I've ever gotten in Heng (Golem Weaponsmith was the other) so I'm trying to be careful with him.

Oh and I've realised that teleport away can be a life saver. I had one abborted attempt at Ancalagon as I had just quaffed a !ofRes and as soon as I started the fight I knew it was a mistake. I just teleported him away and took a couple of steps to the stairs - very handy.

We'll see what happens over the next couple of days. I've got two crappy Heavy Lances stored at home ( one is of *Slay Orc* woohoo) so when I get to chlvl 40 I'll trump brand one of them and take it for a spin.

Still have had no luck finding 3rd or 4th spellbook which is mildly annoying. Does it normally take so long or is it just me? It seems like I've found at leatst the 3rd spellbook for every other Magic Real except Trump - oh well...

Teleport away is astonishingly valuable. For the late game, there are 4 rods worth hanging onto that you can find at this state of the game (in order of importance): disarming, stone to mud, detection, and teleport other. Plus, it stays great right up through the end of the game. Even if something resists teleport, you can usually get it if you've got a stack of them and keep trying.

This is indeed pretty late not to have found the 3rd book, but it depends where you have been hanging out. The 4th book, on the other hand, can take a while.

Good luck!

Beastlord is so lucky to be alive after a pure act of stupidity on my part...

Whilst in the wilderness above the Dragon's Lair I noticed that I hadn't cast Teleport Level - so for the sake of completeness I cast it and was promptly placed on first level of Lair right next to 'Keeper of Secrets' who was awake - at the same instant (with my Trump Spying turned on as always) I behled the terrible visage of 'someone or other' and was promplty hallucinating..... Long story short - the Keeper took me down from @700hps to @75 - I was then madly teleporting around the level and ended quaffing both healing and the one *healing* poition I had on me as well as CCW's. At one point I landed next to something that was breathing pure logrus and taking me down seriously when the recall took effect . I got out of there with 170hps and no serious means of healing left and things were just around he corner - very very lucky - In fact I had written him off.

I think I've played enough tonight - might take a break till tomorrow...

Yep still on top level of Lair.

Finally got a Wyrm (Bile Wyrm - but still not bad).

Been using my 3 rings (Flame, Frost and Acid) to knock off the relevant variety of Wyrms before I realised that Bile Wyrms don't have an Aura and thus would be a feasible ride - so I nabbed one). Flash (Elemental Dragon) has served me well but he's now been put out to pasture at home.

Last trip as well as getting Bill (Bile Wyrm) I also got Fingolfin so equipment is slowly starting to come together.

Find this nice Scythe of Slicing of Slaying (9d5 with poison slay) and decided to use it instead of Zantetsuken as it has annoyed me on a couple of occasions with regard to female enemies (Queen Ant and Nagas) as well as it's non performance against jellies). The scythe seems to get quite a few criticals and seems pretty good to me so I'll stick with it for the moment as it just *feels* better than the Heavy Lance of Freezing.

I wasted alot of time trying to train up Law and Balance Drakes but they all invariably died to much tougher opponents so I think I'll just try and trade up Bill to a faster model (he's only +8). I did captue a Unicorn but he won't let me haste him because of his reflection so I won't bother with him.

Upward and onward.

Once I started descending in Dragon's Lair Trumps of Doom started turning up frequently so I'm happy about that.

Have found some decentish gear (Mook, Carlammas) and my newly made (trump) Heavy Lance seems to be doing the business. I carry Nain for the Disenchant res. It's actually not a bad weapon as I found out when I took on a Hru and beat it with room to spare whilst wielding it (slay Giant :-0).

Gotta also say that Bile Wyrm (now upgraded to +16 speed model) is actually quite handy as a lot of the mid level uniques don't seem to resist Acid.

My plan now that I'm descending the Lair howeve is to capture a Wyrm of Law and use it to summon till I get a high speed individual. I won't be dismissing the Bile Wyrm though - just in case...

I've tangled with Thuringwethil 3 times now and each time gotten her down to 3 stars but summons and bad positioning have meant that I've had to teleport her away and leave her for later - I might break out some of those staves of Starlight I've got stashed just for her.

I can't seem to work my gear at the moment to free up my ring slots for some decent stuff - hopefully that will come soon (I've still got Boldor's ring there...).

The adventure continues...

Yes he's still in the Lair.

Just had my first experience of the Blood curse. I was fighting Dwork Barimen and I was contemplating switching to my Anti-Magic amulet to avoid getting paralyzed from a curse when I decided not to waste a turn and just kill him.

Sure enough he cursed me and paralyaed me and summoned an Arch Lich and a Wyvern. Luckily the Archlich appeared behind a wall in the next room and couldn't seem to work it's way toward me and my trusty Law Wyrm steed kept he wyvern occupied until the paralysis passed. I don't know why I didn't swap in the Anti-Magic amulet - It's the only reason I carry it. Lesson learnt. At least he dropped the Amulet of the Sacred Knights so I guess that makes up for it. Still scary though (only lost 100hps - though if he got cyberdemons and other super nasties I dare say the result would've been different).
