Malekith, this is your doom!
The staff of starlight in Hengband is a powerful weapon, once you've learned how to use it correctly. Perhaps he thought a couple of nether balls can finish me so easily, but I was faster and he had no chance anyway...

Ok, do tell. How do you use that staff "correctly"? Having just run into Malekith in the Cloning Pits and only beaten him after substantial effort, I'm curious to know if there is an easier way.

Ok. Here's the tips.
The beams from the staff aim at random directions normally, but if you're adjacent to walls or other obstacles, the light will not be cast to that direction.
In short, if you're standing at the end of a blind lane (that works as an "Anti-Summoning Corridor"), all of the beams from the staff will hit your opponent.
Not so powerful as samurai arts or "Starburst" by blue mages, but I think it's still enough effective, and there are quite a few mid-level monsters in Hengband that are "hurt by bright light". (...who's next?)

But... in the Cloning Pits? That's very difficult...
If you're happen to be a ranger, you could cast Forest Creation and burn some trees, and that'll work though.

Now you can understand that one of my favorite class is the magic-eater, by the way.
