Second go at a Beastmaster. My first attempt went sour when a Dracholich double moved to instadeath me (Cordello). This character should do so well :-)

Played as a fighter till CL18, when I went into the wilderness to Charm a 4 headed hydra. If you are curious about the speed benefits of riding, my experience went like so, with a +10 speed pet:
CL18: Began riding. Beginner.
CL25: +1 speed. Skilled
CL26: +2 speed.
CL28: +3 speed.
CL29: +4 speed.
CL31: +5 speed. Expert.

I've since gone down to the Dragon's Lair to summon a better reptile, and landed a +12 speed 11 headed hydra, netting my riding at +6 speed.

Now here are some questions:
[1] Why play Cavalry rather than a Beastmaster? The latter class has 2 really good things going for it in the Telepathy spell (CL20) and the Haste Monster spell (CL29). Both classes are capped at 5 attacks. Am I missing something about Cavalry? I've never tried one ...
[2] What is the effect of wielding a non-riding weapon while riding? I'm guessing you might get thrown of your mount more often, but as of yet, I cannot discern a difference (Benkei is not suitable for riding).

On 19.6.2005 05:25 wrote:
Okay....
[1] Basically Beastmasters has fewer number of attacks than Cavalries.
For instance, Beastmasters can only get 4 attacks with a Heavy Lance with one hand, with stat maxed out.

And also they have more HD, can make some decent archers, and are decent fighters on their own feet. (and IMHO, a better reward for the Old Castle quest... the Lance of Eorlingas is not so powerful in Hengband, since it isn't "Slay Evil" branded.)
So Cavalries are easy and fun to play in the early stages, and really enough powerful till the endgame - being rather too straightforward and you might think it boring, though.

[2] You'll get a large to-hit penalty, if you are not a cavalry nor a beastmaster.
If you're a cavalry, you'll get some bonus on calculation of your number of attacks with weapons which are "sutable for use while riding."
As for a beastmaster... well, I dunno :)

BTW, you consider about, only those 2 spells? Looks like you are still not aware how dangerous you can be!

Thank you for your input.

I see what you mean regarding number of attacks. Here I am, after the cloning pits (CL32 is a bit ambitious for this quest, btw), with STR and DEX maxed out, but still only 4 attacks with the 40lb Benkei. Score 1 for the Cavalry :-) (I'll switch to ThunderFist in a minute ...)

Hmmm ... I must confess that I never really got into Trump, ever since it was first introduced in Zangband. So I'm not that good with seeing its power :-) I really like the Dimension Door (CL40) and I suppose Trump Ancient Dragons can be quite useful (Once I find Five Aces ...) I'll have to keep my mind open for useful spells, and, of course, any suggestions are quite welcome :-)

My plan at the moment is to trade in my Hydra for a AMHD mount. We'll see how that goes ...

Trump magics in Hengband? Okay.

"Shuffle" is not useful in the dungeons, but you can alter your "life rate" with this spell. If you're content with your stats but not your life rate, probably this is the spell for you. Cast it repeatedly.

"Swap positions" "Trump Reach" can ignore walls (!) , though you can't use them in no-teleport areas, like most vaults and some quests.
Note that Swap is far easiar than the Dimension Door spell.

"Trump Spider" can be used to chase a fleeing unique. You "specify a target" while you melee, and if the opponent vanished with some teleporting spell, cast it and your faithful pets give their best effort to find the fleeing monster!

And all those summoning spells, too!
My favorites are "Trump monsters" and "Trump Hounds" that'll be the great bane for those unique Q's,

"Dimension Door" ...Okay. No need to mention, I suppose.
One of the most "overpowerd" spells in ZAngband, and that was one of the main cause that monsters' AI algorithm in Hengband is the way it is now...

And, here is one particular spell for beastmasters; "Trump Branding".
If you're using *POWERFUL* artifacts like the Vorpal Blade or the Slayer, this is not of use.
If not, cast it on a mere heavy lance and that'll make a lethal weapon, almost on par with (or sometimes superior to) the Glaive of Pain. Don't be fooled that it's just a 4d8 weapon!

On 19.6.2005 23:52 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
Wow ... all good advice :-) I really like the Swap Positions now ... and if there isn't already a monster in your safe zone to swap with, then *put* one there ;-)

I'm beginning to see what you mean with regards to Heavy Lances being so good. I'm getting by quite nicely with that Vampiric HL that you see ... and I should point out that a 5th attack is indeed available, if you don't mind losing control of your mount for a moment. Often, I battle with my back against the wall, so this is not a drawback!

I'll build a bit more before the Old Castle. I guess Eorlinas will be an improvement, but I'm not quite sure. The vampirism is saving me from ever having to use healing potions ...

Last post for this weekend. I pushed to CL40 to enchant the Heavy Lance. I think a better ring of extra attacks (at least +2) might be in order (And the Leather Armour of Shiva's Avatar, right :-). The extra damage from the Slay Evil (making the Lance 8d8) is immediately noticeable, but I miss the Vampirism of my old Lance. Greater Hell Wyrms now require some care were as before, I would generally recover any HP lost to their fiery breath.

On the riding front, I now receive 11/12 of the speed of my mount. I guess mastery of riding is required for that last bit of speed. And I need to consider a new steed ... Any thoughts on a Lord of Change, or is there something better? I really want a "Very Fast" mount rather than a "Fast" mount ...

On 20.6.2005 05:23 wrote:
> (making the Lance 8d8)
Probably 12d8 is more accurate - almost always you're riding, right?
Looks like no one here knows the trick, though (lances add 2d while riding!)

And, a new mount?
My favorite is a Great Wyrm of Law, being available from early on if you know the trick (and it summons other great wyrms!), but I too think a Lord of Change is a better mount, if you're able to capture one.

Having all low resists and enough speed, and being able to cast haste self, you'll be able to go down and fight the Serpent with it (but beware that it's vulnerable to rockets, so some backup will be necessary).
And its confusion attack really works well against titans and cyberdemons!

You're right. I thought there was some sort of bonus for the lances while riding, I just didn't know what. Turns out you also get +15 to hit.

Well I got a Great Wyrm of Law for a mount. +15 speed no less. Funny, I've mastered riding and only get +14 of that speed. Could it be that Beastmasters can never get the total speed of their steeds?

I must say there is some great variability in the speed of monsters in Hengband. My GWoL just summoned another at ... +4 speed. Can't say I would ride that! :-)

I'm back to the Vampiric HL as well ... the piecemeal healing turns out to be quite useful.

Not only your skill but your level itself affects your speed while riding. So don't worry about it.

Well, yes and no ... I killed Gachapin on L60 of the Dragon's Lair, so its not like I got Amber for my L24 request ... But still, it is a damn fine drop :-)

Switched mounts to a +21 speed Great Wyrm of Space Time. Sure wish that riding an ethereal mount would provide pass wall to me as well, but it doesn't. We'll see if the constant teleportation becomes annoying ...

Its odd that I haven't seen a Lord of Change yet (thought I saw one earlier but it was just Dworken). I seem to recall seeing them all the time in the Dragon's Lair. Well, patience.

And I'm really beginning to enjoy my Trump Lance ... :-)

Since I never lasted terribly long with my attempts at Beastmaster, I speak from a limited amount of experience... but just browsing the monster spoilers, wouldn't a Kirin be even better than a Lord of Change? The only problem with a Kirin might be that when it casts Globe, it might induce Psycho-spear-happy enemies to go nuts with that annoying and deadly spell.

As for dragons, I can understand the immense power in their breath weapons, but Kirin's angel summons gives you still a lot of high-power allies with more resists than most great wyrms.

Just my 2 bits,

Victor

You're probably right, except for the AURA_ELEC flag. This means I need immunity to electricity before I can ride it for more than a few turns :-(

I'm working L72 of the Dragon's Lair at the moment. Lords of Change are L61 monsters, and I would think I would have been able to get one much earlier than now. But Kirin's are L76 ... if I see one, I'll sell out to capture it, even if I can't ride it just yet.

Of course the ultimate ride has got to be a GWoP. Its just getting the requisite immunities to be able to withstand the auras is probably only 10% likely ... (i.e., only if Sauron is really generous!)

Beastmasters are actually a lot of fun! Its quite a change in play style for me, so I doubt I am doing everything correctly, but I am enjoying myself none the less. Of course, if you really like sneaking around the dungeon, it might bother you when your mount insists on waking up every single monster in its line of sight (well killing most of them instantly too is not bad). But there is a pet command for that ...

And yes, I used two hands during *that* battle!!

Looks like the Lance is 21d8 when wielded "forcefully" (3.5x slay). This is based off the Weaponmaster reporting 408-1290 points of damage a round with 6 attacks (+47 to damage).

Now a critical hit will tend to be on the order of 3x + ?. So, we are talking 63d8 when I score a critical. Not bad :-)

Hate, Hate, HATE blood curse. I'm sorry you had to die that way...I lost one of my umpteen promising Blue-Mages that way too.

Your posts have inspired me to attempt another Beastmaster (and hopefully this time I have enough patience to develop riding properly).
I'll do it to avenge Ula!

Best,

Thanks, Victor. I'm glad somebody else hates that darn TY_CURSE as much as I do :-) This one hurt a little more than usual since [1] I've never won a Beastmaster before, and this guy looked promising, and [2] I've lost 2 other characters this way in the last couple months (both were ninjas). Its one thing to die from player stupidity. At least you can sit back and ponder how to do better next time. Its quite another to die just because the RNG is in a bad mood!

I guess if it weren't for the curse and my number two annoyance (which is, of course, the dreaded double/triple move), we would be winning Hengband every time we played ;-) And that wouldn't be much fun ... or would it??

Good luck on the Beastmaster. I'm sure you will do quite well. For me, the game was a bit slower in the beginning, but once I got a powerful mount (an AMHD), things became quite fun. I turned on the pet option to allow casting of attack spells and sat back while the dragon breathed death and destruction to all in sight. It's really quite a rush, and the GWoL was even more dramatic!!

I'm stating one too. Looks like fun. I agree - crappy way to die but it's what sets Hengband apart from the other variants - you never really know that you are 100% safe - :-)

Black Wolf ( Vampire Beastmaster ) is on his way to retrieve your remains....

I've got a long way to go in this game. Black Wolf the Vampire Beastmaster died at chlvl 26 trying to level quickly in the Dragon Cave.... Haven't bothered to post him as there was nothing remarkable about him....

Lesson learned - I might revisit Beastmaster class once I calm down a bit...

The Dragon's Lair can be very dangerous. I honestly don't know how some characters can survive there early on ... I guess stealth and good detection or telepathy is prerequisite. I generally wait until I have the boots before playing around with Dragons, which puts me at CL35 and at least speed +4 ...
