Just scored the Ring of Intelligence from the Black Market, bumping me to 1.5 spells per level. Which means that I have finally been able to learn every spell for my level.

Two artifacts at Level 27 - that's like my normal characters - is that just bad luck or have you sold them all?

On 23.8.2002 00:59 garnet@aufait.net wrote:
Actually, it was three. I already sold Paurhach, which are relatively useless for a mage. However, it is about par for the course. I am only at 950'. When I play high-elf mages, I am usually around 1250' at this character level.

The reason for the slow decent was that hung out a 800' for a long time. I would recall into the dungeon, clear the leavel, hoard everything sellable, then recall and sell and repeat. There was nothing magical about that level. It just seemed that all my slots were filled by the time I finished the level. Now that I have enough pocket change for a stat potion if it appears in the BM, I am desending again and being more picky about what I pick up for resell.

Just found Arvedui at 1000'. As soon as I find another source of free action, I can ditch the defender and use the Lucrene Hammer of Extra Attacks

Currently at 1350'. Just switched the Hammer of X attacks from Defender.

Finally made it down to 1500'. (Only took 2.9 M turns!) Now for the slow process of stat gain.

Currently cruising 1800'. I am afraid to go lower because of my piddling 295 HPs.

Finally got the last CON potion needed to finish stat gain. I am currently at 2000' and descending slowly

Finally found Caspanion at 2100' which resolved three problems simultniously: my lack of Rconf, my lack of Rpois, and my HP below the 600 magic number.

Foolishly tried taking on a zoo that contained three Dracolisks. Teleported 2 of them away and concentrated on the third. By the time, I killed it, the rest of the zoo was lined up behind it. Thinking discretions was the better part of valour, I teleported away. So far, so good. But, in my haste to finish off the rest of the zoo, I started making my back before I was fully healed and wasn't paying attention to the "overhead" view which showed that one of the teleported away Draoclisks was on the next screen. YASD!

Excellent character! I never figured a Half-orc Mage would be *this* good! I read all your comments, and there is one thing that really bothers me. The phrase "discretions was the better part of valour", from which game was it? Damn, that comment is soooo familiar, but I can't figure it out! Was it from Heroes III? If it was, then I'm a sick man with a sick way of remembering sick things too detailed...

It predates computer games. It is from William Shakespeare's King Henry IV, part I. The original quote was "The better part of valour is discretion". - (Act V, Scene IV). The reason it seems familiar even if you haven't read or saw the play is that it is frequently used by others. I haven't played Heroes so I don't know if it was used there.
