His equipment finds have been very uneven. Half his gear is total crap (not only is it a helm of infravision, its only +1! A +5 ring of damage? Nothing better has turned up?), but half (Fingolfin, Zantetsuken, maybe that nifty cloak) is almost end-game worthy.
Finding the 3rd Bard book was a great pick-up and Dispelling Chant is even better than Doomcall (100 damage/round vs all evil monsters in LoS clears troll pits in about 30 seconds). However, the Bard's inability to multi-task is really proving troublesome now that he has lots of good spells. He can double his rBase+poison, or he can haste himself, or he can cast dispelling chant. If he could do all three at once (up to the limits of his mana, of course), he could be hunting AMHD right now. Sadly, he's restricted to doing one at a time and that really limits him.

Summoners are also less of a pest to him that to other characters, since they all get hit by the spell attack just as easily as if there was only one.
Working up my courage to go after the cloning ipits. Probably give it a shot around clevel 35.

Songmaster's stealth isn't as good as that of my two previous characters to make it this far, so he went for the summoners first, and blew most of his supplies powering through them. Once I realized that just because he CAN cast dispelling chant doesn't mean he SHOULD, because it wakes up the other monsters in that room. Doing 100 damage/round to all them is totally outweighed by having all of them awake.
Once I got past that the fighting was tough, but he was up to it.

This dump is from Songmaster just about to enter the quest and me looking at his inventory again and again trying to figure out if I've forgotten anything.
On 22.6.2005 02:41 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel:38, dlevel:54) Damn, the Old Castle was tough. Most of it was easy, but I forgot Songmaster didn't have hold life, so by the time he got to the Greater Titans, the various undead had drained him down to level 35. The Titans then summoned things like Dracolisks and Iron Liches, making the situation even worse.
Songmaster responded by dropping runes of protection everywhere and trying to only fight while standing on one. If he couldn't create one or get to one, he'd teleport himself or the monster away. Definitely wouldn't have survived without them. Finally, the summoners were gone, and then Songmaster was able to while down the summoned monsters. Took a while, but the loot was worth it. Thorin, armor of the padre, and thranduil, plus a ton of other stuff and the Palantir. Very nice.

Plus Lems, of course.
Finally, Songmaster just ran out of supplies, and Lems is so fast and hits so hard that I didn't want to take him on at under 100%. Plus, at the end he was hanging out with Hastur, and I REALLY didn't want to take them both on at once. Oh well.

Just killed Glaaki and Judge Fire together on dlevel 70. Glaaki is pretty wimpy for his level, though he got his revenge by dropping nothing of value.
Made a detour to the Chameleon Cave for a potion of polymorph, but the mutation was random teleport. I'll have to get that cleaned up.
While fighting Glaaki it suddenly dawned on me that Songmaster's equipment can be activated for a surprisingly large amount of damage and then took advantage of it by shooting down a fleeing Glaaki with Crimson and Fingolfin.

Songmaster was even able to kill a cyberdemon (though he relied heavily on LoS abuse to do it. It is indeed possible in Heng, but the situation has to be set-up just right), which is the first time I've ever killed one. They're generally not worth the risk, but this was a special circumstance.

If he gets lucky and draws Cerberus or something for the last random monster, he'll give it a shot, but if its the Unicorn or The Destroyer there's no way. Azriel was just too high risk to try, and the next one will probably be the same.

It seems, however, that you are managing to stay safe pretty well, and have a decent amount of HP on top of that. My advice now would be to raid the Mines repeatedly for Plasma/Nether/Mana hounds for experience (easy to kill, and LOTS of exp in a group). Another thing you can do to entertain yourself is to seek out Gabriel repeatedly in Angband, and scum his escorts for Golden/Silver Angels. I've done this effectively, especially with Ninjas, and I've gotten some of the best treasure in the game from Cans of Toys.
Good luck, and don't die!

A pair of boots of levitation proved to have rPoison (ALWAYS keep those random resistance items. You never know when you'll need a specific item with a specific resist.), allowing him to dump Frakir (the boots of Shiva are great, but he could do better with rings at this point) and switch to his choice of: A) a +12 RoS (+31 unhasted speed!), B) Vilya, or C) Tulkas. Went with Tulkas for the extra HP and haste activation, and so far its been good.
Also, that awesome great hammer of slaying (its poison branded) did great, and absolutely tore Gothmog apart (he he two *GREAT* hits and one good hit in a single round of attacks, and Gothmog really staggered), but too many monsters have poison resist, and there aren't many female monsters. He's back to Zantetsuken.
Found a falcon sword of sharpness, and the pvals stack, so it has +2 attacks. I've seen sharpness up to +4, which would have given 5 extra attacks. So, its interesting, but not worth switching to.
Anyway, things are going fine and Songmaster is hunting some of the higher level uniques. Gothmog was a handful, and is easily the highest level unique killed so far (he summoned one, getting a pair of cyberdemons, but Songmaster was luckily able to teleport them away). Draugluin, Cyugtha, and Klingsor are next on the powerscale, and none were nearly as difficult thanks to runes of protection, doubled resists, and anti-summoning tunnels, respectively. Draugluin, in particular, was a pushover. Songmaster took control and just battered him until he dropped. That was a big step, because I'd been pretty concerned about whether Songmaster could handle these guys, and so far the answer seems to be yes, as long as its 1v1.

Second, I saw a Caaws for the first time ever, and it was very close to Cantoras. An extremely helpful monster, as Cantoras summoned Thuringwethil, and then they both summoned a few more times, resulting in great gobs of undead. The Caaws's huge drain mana attack wasn't the instakill threat to big monsters I had hoped, but it definitely helped whittle the lesser undead's numbers down by dispatching masses of wights and it even helped kill Thuringwethil and some elder vampires. Once the battle was over, Songmaster managed to kill it (admittedly not very grateful of me, but I wanted to see how hard it was), and while it took a while, it wasn't as bad as I expected, especially considering Songmaster's somewhat paltry ranged attacks. Just dispelling chant+fingolfin and Crimson activations, rest and repeat. Eventually, it was slow with the invulnerability and healing and it died because they really don't have that many HP. Needless to say, Songmaster didn't try to melee it.

Burned through quite a lot of supplies, as Oberon went dispel magic crazy early in the fight, but he calmed down. He only summoned a few times, but it was never a game breaker. First hounds (just water hounds), greater undead (just wraiths and an iron lich), and lords of Amber getting just Benedict (as most of the others are dead... hmm, at least, I think so. Lets see, who's left... Rinaldo, Eric, and Benedict. That's it.), and Oberon was badly injured and teleported away just a round later, Songmaster teleported too, and Benedict never caught up.
Oberon mostly meleed, but used most of his tricks at one time or another, and Songmaster matched him by using his various potions liberally. Songmaster wore him out, chased him down when he got teleport happy at the end, and finished him off.
The key, as it has been for a while, is Songmaster falling back on Doomcall. Anything that can be stunned and lacks rSound will be severely abused by its stunning power, with the damage being a happy bonus. Apparently not. Songmaster got a "learn" back at either level 39 or 40, and hasn't gotten another one since. Songmaster is doing fine, but it would be nice to have access to some of those higher level spells, at least just to play with them a bit. That snazzy new two handed sword might actually be the permanent replacement I've been searching for.

After struggling to kill those two, and burning lots of healing potions doing it, Songmaster ran into Abhoth, who even resists stunning even, but doesn't have a sheath, and just blew through him, using only a potion of heroism.
Abhoth was also thoughtful enough to drop the Death Scythe, which I'm currently pondering. It does astounding damage, but this whole hitting yourself thing makes me nervous. I think I've figured out that return hits happen on between 5-10% of all attacks, and against Cyaegha Songmaster even hit himself twice in the same round. On the one hand, that's terrible. Each return hit does 200-250, and more if its a vorpal or critical hit. On the other hand, Songmaster's advantage over say, a Berserker, is that he only gets 4 blows/round and he just doesn't hit very hard. Thus, he simply can't hit himself very many times, and even when he does it won't be that hard.
The Serpent has elemental sheaths to beat the band, so by doing far more damage per blow with the Death Scythe over the two-handed sword, he'll dramatically reduce the damage he takes frome the sheaths. I think the reduction is actually more than enough to make up for the return blows, though the return blows do more at once, increasing the risk of a kill-shot from the Serpent. We'll see how it goes.

My main wants were armor that had rBase, rPoison, and rShards, so he could swap those boots for the boots of Shiva, but its never worked out. Additionally, a way to wield that ring of +2 attacks and mana storm would have been great, but he needs his current rings for +speed and +CON. Restore mana was even worse, because I'd typically teleport away pretty quickly whenever the Serpent summoned something nasty, even if the glyph of warding hadn't been broken. Those things cost a fair amount of mana to create, the Death Scythe pretty badly crimped his mana total, and the Serpent generally caught up to him well before his mana had a chance to regenerate. The potions ran out when the Serpent was down to 3 stars or so, and the scrolls of rune of protection ran out shortly after.

-6 rations of food (in a dumb move, I made sure Songmaster was full before going in. With all the potion quaffing, avoiding 'gorged' status was actually a running problem. Hunger wasn't an issue.)
- 30 potions of speed (used 12, about as expected)
- 31 potions of heroism (used 13, about as expected)
- 23 potions of CCW (used 17, the only reason there are any left was because of the whole 'gorged' thing.)
- 1 potion of life (used all healing and *healing*. Using those CCW potions would have saved a couple healing potions, but he really could have used more healing.)
- 10 potions of resistance (used 10, about as expected)
- 15 scrolls of teleportation (used 31, with all the summoning the Serpent did and then avoiding bad battlefields, I was starting to worry about these in the end)
- 6 word of recall scrolls (Used 1 to get in, he's still in Angband.)
- 14 scrolls of holy chant (used 9, about as expected)
- 6 scrolls of *destruction* (used 11, more than expected thanks to the summoning. They were probably the most important single item he carried. Don't attempt them Serpent without a bunch of them.)
In an interesting turn of events, a "Plain Goldarn Ring" is sitting a small vault, guarded by some minor monsters. Could it be? I think Songmaster will put of retirement for a few minutes...

Some thoughts on using a Death Scythe. Overall, I definitely would NOT recommend it for use by most characters. In fact, about 1/4 of the way into the battle, I gave some serious thought to recalling out and switching weapons (not surprisingly, it was right after a series in which Songmaster hit himself twice (with either critical or vorpal hits both times) while missing the Serpent with the other two attacks, drank a *healing* potion, then hit himself twice AGAIN (also with both hits being critical or vorpal) while also missing the Serpent with the other two attacks, and had to drink ANOTHER *healing* potion. The Serpent must have found that very amusing.), but then the darn thing would land a *GREAT* hit that also Maimed, inflicting probably 1,500-1,800 damage with just that one blow. Of course, had that been a return blow, Songmaster would have been chopped in half.
Overall, oddly enough, I'd say that enough who is a reasonably good melee combatant should never, ever use the Death Scythe, because it WILL kill you. Characters who are actually fairly mediocre melee characters, but who need to do some damage with their melee for whatever reason (rather than using the slot for stat boosts or resists or something), are very unlikely to kill themselves (as long as you're careful) but the Death Scythe will turn them into fairly imposing melee characters.
In the case of Songmaster, it worked perfectly. The Serpent would show up, get hit by dispelling chant and Songmaster's melee for an average of 3-5 rounds, at which point it would either break the glyph or summon something nasty and Songmaster would teleport away. The timing was perfect, because Songmaster would generally need to heal himself from the self-inflicted Scythe damage at that point anyway.
If I had it to do over again, I'd probably skip the Death Scythe and go with the two-handed sword. With doubled resists, the Serpent's sheaths really didn't do that much damage and the return blows were probably too high a risk. While it would probably have increased the length of the battle, Songmaster probably took nearly as much damage from the Death Scythe over the battle as he did from the Serpent, so with the two-handed sword he would have been able to stick with each individual skirimish a round or two longer before teleporting away because of needing to heal.
