3 rounds of mutation scumming. First, I picked up 12 mutations in the relative safety of the Vapor Quest, but nothing notable other than Teleport Self, which I managed to keep after removing the others. I think I am ready for the Cloning Pits, despite my truly horrible stealth. This 6d12 poison branded bo staff is just crazy, and even puts Nain to shame doing more than twice the damage. Why can't my weaponsmith find something similar?

I began with Hiding Tune for Legendary[32] stealth and a sprint to the Bokrugs. But then, once I emerged from my song stealth, I got some nasty summons, including a Crypt Creep that drained all my healing charges and 1 of my speed charges. I had redundant !Healing, but not !Speed, so it was fortunate my staves had split on usage and that only 1 got drained. I still had 3 remaining or I'd have to fall back on Hobbit Melodies when I would much prefer to use Doomcall.

After the Bokrugs, Its and their plentiful summons were dispatched, the remainder was fairly straightforward. Doomcall to distance kill the Grendel Army amassing on my northern front, and then why not? Doomcall to distance kill the Rogrogs. Jurts went down easily, and fortunately I managed to get all 3 Dagons before the Queens sprinted over to join the party. 2 ranging regal ants and 100+ fire ant minions fell to my call of doom, and that just left the already escaped Gachapins as serious contenders, but they dazed right up and fell to my 15d12 staff of destruction.

Thorin was a sweet early take. Isildur is too heavy, and now I really do have enough Con. Not knowing what to wear on my shield finger, I'm going with a slight AC boost and some alternative double resistance. For dragons in the lair, I've been using Finrod's Resistance rather than Doomcall, and I'd like that to change!

I really want the Palantir as lack of telepathy has been getting me into trouble, but I don't quite feel up for that quest just yet. Let me level up a bit more first ...

I took my "Very Bad" stealth into the Old Castle, but I went in strong. 8 charges of _Healing, 32 of _Speed, 10 !Healing, 10 !Speed, 5 !RestoreMana, 60 ?Teleport, etc. The trick is getting started in the right spot (Wall Monsters) to gain a foothold, and it takes a bit of teleportation to get there. Two more runs at mutations. The first one was a bust, but the second one netted the White Aura. I decided to play with that for a bit, but what I am really after is Eat Magic. Sadly, that mutation is next to impossible to obtain (Try starting up a Beastman and scumming for it ... I've never managed to get it that way in over 1000 attempts). Still, I did have a couple characters luck into it, including a Blue Mage, so there is hope.

I ran into a !Polymorph, quaffed it, and turned into an Albino. Removal removed 'em all, so I decided to go for mutations in earnest. I went thru about 100 mutations, but never picked up Eat Magic (or Telepathy or Harden to Elements). I did pick up a White Aura 3 times, though. Finally, I surrender. This is a pretty good set of mutations, with utility (Blink, Recall), stats (+4 Str), Defense (Magic Resistance) and Luck (White Aura). I plowed down to DL82 in Angband, picked up a really good ring of speed, and some nice dragon gloves at last, and decided I was oh so close to CL45 and the Wizardry of Sauron. So why not level up the last 500k xp at the top of the lair, which is very quick? Well, I just ran into a pit of Great Wyrms of Law, and for some reason, they are rather tough for me! But 95 x 35k xp means I'll meet my goal of CL45 for sure :D
