I finally managed to spam the Eat Magic mutation with a Beastman for the first time ever! Of course, this meant I was stuck with

[1] Missed early stat boosts. Normally, I scum for a good start in this respect. For some reason, I kept getting Int and Wis boosts, but once I realized my Recall mutation was tied to Int, and Eat Magic tied to Wis, I stopped complaining and just sucked it up.

[2] Whatever crappy additional mutations I pick up. Rotting Flesh came early, biffing my Chr as well as my Con.

[3] Low Beastman spell points due to -10% mana penalty. And no, I won't be switching my race, even if I do ever get Polymorph Self.

And Eat Magic is truly a delayed gratification ability. Of course, now it is wonderful, if unreliable. 6% fail on the ability, but at least a 30% additional fail stacked on top, and frequent destruction. But I scummed a lot of rods from the BM, so I am prepared.

I switched to melee once Stormbringer and the Harness showed up, but now I can't really handle the Harness. We're talking -2 speed, -7 charisma, and only 200 or so spell points, so I pretty much have to Eat Magic after only 4 rounds or so of Doomcall. With the boots, I think I can do just fine without the extra (+15, +15) from the Harness. And, of course, ultimately, I don't want to melee at all. But that will have to wait for CL45 ...

Its tough to get going in The Old Castle with aggravation. Numerous teleports before I could get within 10 squares of the by then almost out of control wall monster herd. But, a little doom call mopped 'em up, along with the 40-50 other ninnies that had gained line of sight by that point. Then, it was tunnel in and take out 'em. I was so popular, monsters from the entire level lined up to take a shot at me, but I quickly stunned 'em all, and thanks to Eat Magic, it was just a bit time consuming. I only blew up 4 rods, so Eat Magic is becoming a bit more reliable. I'm down to 57 rods of elemental balls from nearly 100, so quite a few have gone boom! But, I think I have enough ...

With The Palantir in hand, I spent nearly 10 minutes trying to figure out an equipment set that covers all resistances and doesn't encumber. This is the best I could do, though I'm not sure it is the best solution. I surrender melee completely with 4 full levels to go before the Wizardry of Sauron. But, I think I can cover that with magic devices and Song of The Tempest (35d10).

Yeah, I like my shooter, but I'd trade for Brand any day of the week. Especially now that I am a fat mutated bard with Cambeleg (Bubble Vault). Speaking of which, I am far to inventory challenged to fit _Destruction into my kit, and wouldn't I have loved to have some of that against a wacky bubble vault at DL60. We are talking:
Shub-Niggurath, Gothmog, Gerard. I quaked what I could, but I had to run from that foul DL90+ passwall demon, get it to chase me to a far corner of the level, then dart back inside the vault and wind my way around to safety. Gothmog could just be teleported, of course. Gerard could not, but he was confined to the last little bit of the vault ... I just had to dart up and check a 5d5 longsword to make sure it was Worpal. All told, I picked up Cambeleg and Fingolfin (abandoned!) as well as 4 or 5 other minor artifacts (Calris, Holhenneth, Thalkettoth, Merlin) and a nice diamond edge, but I am so close to CL45 and my Wizardry bliss that I was scarcely pleased. +2 con from Cambeleg is nice, though. Gerard was guarding a 2d4 dagger I couldn't get to ... big deal.

More mutation annoyances. The only one I want is Eat Magic. The other 12 are just there to bring my regeneration speed down (10 free, so I am now -30% regeneration rate), and hopefully I can skate on up to CL50 with no mishaps (like vulnerability to elements). Heck, I'd even play with the Black Aura as Eat Magic is just that rare (less than .1% for me).

Being of an aggravating disposition, I still find the top of the Dragon's Lair challenging, so I'll stay here for the final 500,000xp I need. At that point, I will go from <200hp damage per round to over 500hp, and life will be dramatically different. Maybe I'll stop blowing up so many freaking rods with Eat Magic, but I doubt it. Every trip into the dungeon costs me a couple ...

After my last post, next trip down blew up 7 rods (in about 15 attempts). My mages usually blow up at about 1%, so I'm not sure what is up here. Just unlucky, I guess. So I stopped using Eat Magic except in emergencies, and relied on the Charmed Pendant and magic devices to slowly make my way up to CL45 and the coveted Wizardry of Sauron. Now, I can dish out 3500 damage in a single run thru my mana (vs. about 1000 before). With the Charmed Pendant, I can handle foes up to 7000hp, which is good for the time being. I still Eat Magic when pressed by mobs, but I try to avoid it. I'm finding rods now at about the pace I'm blowing them up. Maybe 70 have blown so far? Mages complete the game blowing maybe 5 or so ... I'll need to check the code as the mutation may have a higher back end fail rate then the mage ability. The mutation does have a lower front end fail rate (4% vs. 11%) so this is entirely possible, and my current experience definitely suggests this. I'm wondering if Aggravate, 100sp and a ton of crappy mutations was worth the cost?!

Well, I'm just now entering the point in the game that is the raison d'ętre for scumming Eat Magic in the first place, so lets see how the game plays out from this point forward. My mistake was probably abandoning melee to early which forced me to rely on 3 runs thru my mana to kill anything. Those days should be over :D

Source Dive:

[1] Mages, High Mages, Sorcers, Magic Eaters and Blue Mages blow up rods 1 in 10. Other classes, like Bards, blow up rods 1 in 3. So 3.3x the blow up frequency as normal, but I have blown up about 15x to 20x as many as normal. I think that is do to far more reliance on Eat Magic than usual. I only have ~300sp while a HM (my stock character) will have nearly 550sp. Also, I was relying on spells far more than average.

[2] Picking up the Eat Magic mutation is a 1 in 193 proposition.

Wizardry of Sauron just made the likes of Tselakus and Druaga look stupid. Being dazed by 500+ hp sound balls made even movement difficult for those guys, and neither mustered a single offensive action. Tselakus was able to take two steps towards me before dying, and Druaga only one.

Eat Magic is starting to pay off!

I picked up Polymorph Self for mutation #14. The bad news is that this activation inserted itself in the exact same key combination as Eat Magic, something I've done thousands of times already this game. It is very hard to unlearn these keystroke combinations. Already, I've mistakenly activated polymorph self 3 times when meaning to Eat Magic. The good news is that a warning prompt has been inserted!! Phew! So, I was able to cancel out of my mistake all 3 times.

1 more level up to go, so only one more chance to screw myself with a bad mutation. Its rather sad the the only mutation I received all game that I would consider good is Recall. Actually, since I swapped shooters, sickening obesity is looking OK, but I still don't like the -2 speed. +4 strength is normally good, but I have max strength already without that. This is just reinforcing my belief that mutations are stacked ... horribly stacked ... in the negative to useless direction.

Tarrasque for DL76! Yikes! Fortunately, it can be stunned, and fortunately, I only needed 3 zaps of healing. I left my staves and potions of healing at home since I have yet to need them, whereas every trip down has me leaving useful items behind.

CL50 level up gave another useless mutation. So, only 1 good mutation, but only 2 bad mutations as well. The other 11 I could care less about, except that now my regeneration rate is 50% of normal. But, at this point, I'm not about to change things up.

I need to improve my speed rings quite a bit if I am to have a shot at The Serpent. I keep finding the +4 variety, however :P

When Gerard's Bloodcurse destroyed his corpse (Indirectly ... Vlad vs. Caldarm the Third, and a Locke Clone Army. Eventually, the corpse got squished before I could get within 20 squares of it), I decided to trump tower down for the win. Oh, Oberon was easy enough, as he is dazed up by my wizardry, but now I am having second thoughts. +20 speed is just too slow given that all the quality uniques are still alive. So, I'll hang out for more speed, and to thin things down a bit. And perhaps, just perhaps, I can luck into a ?ArtifactCreation in the dungeon? Hey, its been known to happen.
