Got a bit lucky in the early game as the Warg quest reward was the Gauntlets of Agility (+5) that I'm still wearing...by clvl 28, my ninjutsu minimum failure rate was down to 0% :)
Found the Sling of Extra Shots in the mimic's treasure quest, and Colannon in the 2nd angband quest. Have had two scrolls of Acquirement so far, and both have produced Resistance armor...unfortunately, one was a shield (bad for ninja), and one was double chain mail (too heavy). Finally found an armor of Resist Lightning, which allowed me to cover the basic resists. Went into the Dragon's Lair to try and speed up the process of finding items a bit...was able to kill a few weaker unique dragons, but they would usually drop three third-level spellbooks and a bunch of random junk. Finally found some randart boots with resist chaos (not to mention +3 CON) which should allow me to survive the cloning pits...maybe I'll find some resistance armor that I can actually use in there?
The good news: At least the Black Market has been producing a steady supply of Staffs of Speed this time around (sorry dzhang...)
Random dual-wielding points of interest...
1. When I wield Poison Needle as my first weapon, attack from ninja stealth and miss with the Poison Needle, my second weapon's first blow sometimes counts as a "surprise attack"...not that I'm complaining or anything :)
2. For some reason that I still can't explain, whenever I wield my Wakazashi (Trump Weapon) in my left hand (aka second weapon), I get +10 to hit with both weapons and +5 to AC. Again, very nice...but I want to know why :)

Do you need RNether already? Extra 36 damage might be nice. Or are you getting most of your kills through the Ninja coup-de-main attacks?

Oh, and dzhang, my day 25 bard hasn't found a Staff of Speed, either. Just a Staff of Power, a Wand of Disintigration, and a Wand of Dragon's Flame.

As for kills, there are a lot of ways...traditional hack-and-slash works against weak enemies...sometimes I attack them from ninja stealth, then move away to get ninja stealth back, then attack again to gain the surprise attack bonus. The only enemy I know that can see and follow you through ninja stealth is the Minotaur of the Labyrinth...although being in an enemy's light radius allows them to follow you sometimes. If all else fails, shoot them down (Sling of Extra Shots helps). Summoners will be a bit harder though...

Decided to go after the Queen Ants first...neglected a sleeping High priest which summoned but those soon died. Gachapins weren't as summon-happy as usual...Bokrug dropped the boots of Shiva's Avatar :) The Father Dagons summoned quite a few demons, including Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath which reduced my STR...fortunately they fell too and the rest was basically just mopping up the mess. Finished it off by killing the last Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner :)
Found Merlin and Holhenneth as well as another randart weapon of stealth (and DEX)...now I have more DEX than I know what to do with. The only resistance armor I found was Rohirrim (too heavy!). Fortunately the Outpost black market produced a Cord Armor of Resistance...finally.
Took the scroll of Acquirement which was the quest reward into the Dragon's Lair, and it produced Metal Lammelar Armor of Elvenkind...sigh. Scrolls of Acquirement mock ninjas...

Getting close to being ready for the Old Castle. Finally found a ring of Chaos Resistance, which finally covered resist chaos (my boots were too heavy!) although the +6 to STR from a ring was nice for a time. Got hit by chaos a few times, but was fortunate enough to only suffer hallucination.
Finally defeated my first Amberite...Rinaldo showed up just after I found the amulet of Anti-Magic...got a reasonably nasty blood curse with lots of stat drain...he also summoned some monsters and made me hallucinate...there were lots of them so I had to teleport...fortunately when I came back, it turned out it was just an Ancient blue dragon and some random spiders.
Scroll of Acquirement #4 result (took a chance and bought one in the black market)...Pike of Slay Troll. Sigh...

Set to enter the Cloning Pits. Found a Feanorian lamp of Darkness which allowed me to upgrade to Sting and Merlin. Quachil Uttaus was very generous to me, dropping Bard and the cloak of Mook...encountered Jack of Shadows on the same level, had to abort.
Progressed to the dlvl 44 quest in Angband...Daoloth was reasonably difficult, but I managed to defeat him by Hiding in Mud and attacking from inside the wall. Returned to dlvl 47 of the castle, encountered Jack of Shadows again, it took me about an hour, and about 9 scrolls of Recharging for my Staff of Speed before I was finally able to beat him using both quick walk and expand horizontally (+50 AC but saving throw drops to "Bad"). Soon after that in Angband, a staff of Healing and my first ring of Speed this game finally showed up just as I was about to reach clvl 41.
Scroll of Acquirement #5: Dwarven Shovel of Digging (I never fail to get one of those...lol)

Wow...this was my fastest Old Castle clear ever. Only the Fallen Angel lived long enough to summon (and it only summoned minor demons and Bloodletters of Khorne). Lesser titans were no problem, and quick walk/expand horizontally made sure the greater titans were likewise.
Found Colluin, but don't really want to take off Mook which covers resist chaos. Torque of Boromir boosted my damage as did 2 potions of Strength. Now the Amulet of the Pitch Dark Night boosts my stealth to even more insane levels :)

Last recall to castle dlvl 50 produced a lot of loot...Hithlomir (wearing now), Hammerhand (if it didn't cost me ESP I'd be wearing that), Thorin (unfortunately shields are bad for ninja), and randart boots (+6 INT, WIS, DEX, CHR, stealth, and resist lightning and dark...not bad, but rather have Shiva's Avatar at the moment). Had a long fight to get it...a Knight templar woke up and started summoning angels...then they got into the Byakhees which started summoning...fortunately I was able to defeat the summoners by hiding inside the wall :)
Next on the wishlist...an amulet of Telepathy :)

Found amulets of Telepathy and Reflection, so switched equipment to the helm of Hammerhand. Proceeded to the bottom of the castle...Kenshirou showed up, needed 2 potions of Healing...Bunshin offers protection from the damage of "cause mortal wounds", but not the cuts (although even Bunshin won't stop a psycho-spear). Fought Layzark next...she was only able to summon a couple of minor demons before she went down, didn't even need any potions of Healing this time. Next stop...probably a few trips to the Dragon's Lair...Thror would be an ideal pickup :)
Scroll of Acquirement #6 (bought at Black Market)...Katana of Force (useless).
Scroll of Acquirement #7 (Layzark dropped this one)...20 Seeker Arrows of Hurt Animal (not bad, better than anything I've picked up so far...)

Not much done (about an hour of actual play since my last dump, but I tend to leave Hengband running), but since everyone seems to be getting some luck with randarts, I thought I'd make another dump to show mine...
Went to the Dragon's Lair and found a second ring of Speed (+6), decided to wear it, but then I would have resist sound and shards uncovered...after a bit more exploring and dragon hunting, returned to town wondering how to cover resists without sacrificing too much speed or damage. The answer came to me in the Black Market...the randart Gauntlets of Arnara [2, +20] with +4 CON, CHR, stealth, resist blindness, confusion, nether, chaos, disenchantment...oh, and it also activates for "resistance!" So after a little equipment shuffling, not only am I able to wear both rings of Speed and have only resist sound uncovered (as before), I can also wield a Vampiric Dagger as one of my weapons...Vampiric really helps a Ninja, especially when quick walking :)
Another thing...when I defeated Layzark, I only had one potion of Healing left. The enemies have been REALLY generous with the potions lately :)

Finally at clvl 50. Found Fiona's dagger in the Dragon's Lair...switched equipment around to maintain hold life, resist sound is covered now but shards is not. Base speed now +26 :)
958 HP at clvl 50...not bad, although that's for a 94/100 life rating, and STR could use a boost, while DEX and CON have some extra room beyond 18/***. Probably look for another potion of New Life and then make the change (I like to be able to fix it in case it doesn't work well the first time).

Plunged into the mountain to defeat Thorondor and get a potion of New Life...and also found another one on the way down, so I decided to start drinking the potions. Didn't get much better...97/100, STR max is up to 18/120, but CON max is only 18/80 (meaning I have a 18/210 CON now...) Fortunately, my wanted uniques started to show up and die, eventually I got up to another New Life as a reward, and this one generated slightly better results...life 102/100, STR still maxes at 18/120 and CON at 18/80, however I'm up to 962 HP and if I find a better CON fit I could be over 1000.
Then (somewhat foolishly) ventured into the Arena to try and fight the Shambler...it breathed lightning on me for something like 500 damage. Uh-oh. Breathed again, down I went. Oh well.
Base speed now at +30, thanks to a randart sling which not only has +3 speed, but both extra might and extra shots :) Although the +21 ring of Damage and the (+3, +20) ring of Damage and Accuracy are somewhat tempting to wear...
Finally finished a dlvl 76 angband quest...the Tarrasque went down in the usual way (resistance up, haste self, hide in a wall while using Bunshin, hand-to-hand until it dies). My wanted uniques are showing up one after the other...I've only got two left to defeat (Eric the Usurper and Fenris Wolf)...

Took some time to attempt the untried quests. Spawning Pits was not too hard...grab the Quylthulgs with chain hook and kill them off. Only the Master quylthulg lived long enough to summon anything significant...not too hard.
Cruised through Vapor Quest and the Bull Gates quest...Doom Quest 2 was also very easy...if you can beat a Hell knight and a Maulotaur, you can pretty much clean this place out...well worth the staff of Healing as a reward. Then the Killing fields...the Warriors of the Dawn slept through the whole thing :)
Eric's Stronghold didn't work out though...defeated most of the surrounding enemies, but some of the central Ultra-elite paladins woke up and started fighting the Death knights...then all hell broke loose...Tselakus, Benedict and Glaaki were summoned, as well as Cyberdemons, Warp demons, Lords of Change, Great unclean ones and other nasties... Used the staff of Healing as long as it would last...managed to take out Tselakus, but eventually there was too much out there and I had to abort. Didn't leave empty handed though...the randart boots of Baihu [2, +18] have +3 to STR and infravision, sustain INT, regeneration, immunity to acid and resist lightning, cold, blindness, sound, nether...using this and my Hard Studded Leather of Elvenkind would allow me to cover all resists at a +26 base speed...however, at this stage of the game, sustain all stats is VERY handy :)
Decided to try the Royal Crypt next...it was pretty uneventful, although a bit annoying following teleporting Demiliches and Archliches. The two final Archliches managed to summon the King in Yellow which also fell...didn't find much in there though.
Fortunately, just before I did all this, Eric the Usurper showed up in Angband and I was able to kill him...now only Fenris Wolf stands between me and a scroll of Artifact Creation :)

10 more uniques slain since last dump, still no sign of Fenris Wolf yet. Rings of Speed are starting to show up frequently now...especially on the corpses of the high-level uniques, my base speed was as high as +43! Now I'm wearing Tulkas which reduces speed to +36 but now I'm one potion of Strength away from maxing out STR, DEX and CON. Crown of Amber showed up as well, that will make healing a little easier :)
Angband dlvl 88 quest coming up soon, I wonder what horrendous nasty unique I have to fight this time :)

Dlvl 88 quest was for Cerberus...phew. Easy kill. About dlvl 90 or so, went into a vault...scary enemies in it...the Unicorn of Order, Shub-Niggurath and the Destroyer were just a few of the nasties. Was about to *Destruction* when I saw a staff of Healing beside me. Hmmm...decided to try to hand-to-hand with the Destroyer, but the staff gave out after only two stars, so *Destruction* it was. Richard Wong then proceeded to show up and ravage my stats...got him down to 4 stars, but my stats were starting to get low with no restoration items, so *Destruction* again followed by recall. From that point on, decided to carry about 300 various iron and mithril shots (heavy!) and all the mushrooms of Restoring I had...
The Destroyer showed up again at dlvl 94, fortunately nothing else was awake at the time and there was a freshly *Destructed* area behind me, so it was shooting time...with the occasional ninja surprise attack when he got close. Got a bit lucky about halfway through the fight..."You fatally injured the Destroyer!" down to 2 stars...then the Destroyer finally began to feel pain and it was all over. Note: thanks to Reflection and Bunshin, no mana bolts hit me the entire fight :)
Richard Wong showed up a bit later...fortunately I was able to keep the majority of the fighting inside the walls, and 3 or 4 mushrooms of Restoring later, down he went.
Other happenings...encountered the Unicorn of Order 4 times so far. Didn't even try to fight him, just used *Destruction* to get rid of him. Raphael has also turned up 4 times...sometimes summoned by the white "q". Got him down to 2 stars once, but then he'd summon a Great Wyrm of Power which, in my condition at the time was bad news... Once he showed up with Azriel, and I found that Azriel had only 2 stars left, so I went in and finished Azriel off before using *Destruction* to get rid of Raphael and all the angels, Sky Drakes and Great Wyrms...
Finally started scumming dlvl 96, 97, 98. The RNG mocked me by having Carcharoth and Draugluin show up in the same room, but no Fenris Wolf. After several attempts, Fenris finally showed up, and his corpse got me the scroll of Artifact Creation, and now I don't have to carry around an amulet of Reflection anymore :)
Probably will do some more unique hunting before fighting Oberon and the Serpent. Might venture into R'lyeh and kill Great Cthulhu so that he doesn't get summoned by the Serpent...although I'm often scared enough of Star-spawns of Cthulhu, let alone Cthulhu himself... :)

Oberon is defeated!
Was unique hunting on dlvl 96, 97, 98 of Angband and found two staffs of Healing on the same level...decided at that moment to go for Oberon. Went and did the hiding inside the wall thing again with Oberon surrounded by halfling slingers, was doing alright, but I was burning through scrolls of Recharging quickly, only had about 8 left out of 25 that I took in with me, and Oberon was still at 6 stars. Then of all things, the Unicorn of Order shows up. Uh-oh. Bad news right? Abort fight?
Glad I didn't do that! Watched in amazement as the Unicorn of Order started fighting against Oberon. And the white "q" was winning! Oberon was just wandering around, teetering on the edge of death, waiting for me to deal the killing blow. Meanwhile, I'm watching from inside the wall, wondering how I'm going to get a clear shot at Oberon without getting incinerated by the swarms of Great Wyrms everywhere.
Then a Great Wyrm of Power conveniently decided to disintegrate the wall I was standing in. Well, here goes nothing...one Hide in Mist later, Oberon dies and I manage to blink to a relatively safe area.
Unfortunately, considering the gangs of Great Wyrms and angels everywhere, I was unable to collect Oberon's items...had to *Destruction* away everything. Oh well...didn't need to use any potions of Healing or *Healing*...I don't think I even activated the Crown of Amber either!
Serpent of Chaos is probably going to be much harder though. Gonna need to find some more staffs of Speed and some Mithril Shots among other things...
Scroll of Acquirement #10 (dlvl 97): Knight's Shield of Resist Fire...

It was clearly a busy round as the messages are truncated, so we can't see everything that happened. It looks like something breathed Sound or Shards, or possibly fired a rocket. Lets say it was the Serpent firing at rocket, so that's 400 damage. With your AC and resists, the Bile Wyrm's attacks probably did 45 or so damage, the Serpent then gets a double move and its two blows probably did in the neighborhood of 70 damage, combined. I don't actually know how much damage earthquakes can do, but they can hit pretty hard. Plus, you were probably hit by something before the rocket or whatever it was. Really bad luck.
On 21.9.2005 17:23 wrote: Well,it seems that 285damage/round wasn't enough to take on the Serpent, even with a ninja.

On 21.9.2005 21:33 leafsrock2k@hotmail.evilisspam.com wrote: Thanks for comments all :)
Elliott, I think I remember the Serpent firing a rocket at some point...the Serpent definitely got a double move...not unusual considering its +45 speed, although the fact that potions of Speed got shattered probably didn't help things. I think "severely crushed" is about as bad as earthquakes get, although I didn't think it was 200+ HP per hit...
Anonymous poster: I did use Hide in Mud regularly during the battle, although the Serpent has a nasty habit of dispelling it (along with most of the other stuff I use). As for Kawarimi, I agree that it's probably a good idea...but I use Kawarimi so rarely that I often forget it's even there...same with Hit + Away, and usually I wouldn't quick walk often either unless I had a vampiric weapon...
Early on in the fight (btw, it's my first time fighting the Serpent)...I tried using staff of Holiness over and over again. Burned up a lot of scrolls of Recharging, but wasn't too effective. Switched to shooting...with my randart sling of Extra Might/Extra Shots/Speed etc., I could actually deal over 300 damage per round (with the mithril shots anyway). Had my staff of Healing give out when he was still about 8 stars...supplies were getting low quickly, so I started trying hand-to-hand combat. Got him down another star when the 1100 damage round happened.
Probably would have done it differently if I could do it again...was focusing on speed when I probably could have done better hand-to-hand. If I had used my ring of Shard Resistance in place of ring of Speed +11, and my usual weapon (Silver Chariot) instead of the trump Dagger, I would have been able to do about 400 damage/round hand-to-hand, although my Speed would have been lower coming in (+26 or so unhasted).
Other things of note:
- Tiamat showed up maddeningly often...and the Serpent summons enough ancient D's already. Next time, I'm killing Tiamat (Bahamut was dead already) before fighting the Serpent. Probably Vecna too.
- Fought the Serpent in a 1 screen by 1 screen level...probably a mistake.
- Items to save for the Serpent: mushrooms of Restoring (unless you have Robe of Permanence or something that sustains all stats), scrolls of *Destruction*, Genocide, Mass Genocide, staffs of Healing (use these fairly aggressively, especially if hand-to-hand. Better than having the Serpent drain them), rods of Stone to Mud (if shooting's your thing), Healing (although I've only ever seen two of these...never gotten far enough in the Arena to win one), Teleport Other (a lot of the D's can be teleported away). Nice things to have: staff of *Destruction*, staff of Speed, staff of Genocide (just watch your HP!), staff of Holiness (even if it's only for healing), potions of Invulnerability (these are rare, I've only seen the one you get from turning in your 19th wanted monster).
- Carrying around Iron and Mithril Shots is *heavy*. If it weren't Extra Might/Extra Shots/Speed, I'd have used a bow instead (even Brand's crossbow didn't measure up to the sling).
- The Serpent never summoned the Unicorn of Order (boo!) although it did summon Morgoth several times (often I'd *Destruction* him away only to see the Serpent summon him again when I tried to shoot it...)
Ah well...what to try next...

You used Bunshin did't you? That was one of the mistakes you made, if you didn't want the Serpent to cast Dispel Magic.
He doesn't have acid-based spells, and passwall is (surprisingly!) regarded as a 'minor' spell, so Hide in Mud will not get dispelled itself, while Bunshin will, together with all other spell effects.
There's a detailed 'dispel magic spoiler' available in Japanese, if you dare to try. But anyway, in short, your foes (or at least intelligent casters) usually don't like their attack double-resisted or you effectively getting poweful with spells, but they don't want to waste their turns dispelling minor or even foolish (like high-level Barlogs getting double-resistant to fire) things either.

That's the trick. ...Or should I ask whether you've read anyway?
On 22.9.2005 04:20 leafsrock2k@... wrote: Hmmm...the Japanese part of the spoiler I haven't read...would be interesting to try and translate it. An interesting thing to remember nonetheless...I tend to use "resistance" effects and items often though, maybe that's why I get dispelled all the time. At least (from what I've seen anyway), Bunshin does not cause the opponents to double-move when dispelled (unlike invulnerability effects). I wonder if it would put a priority on dispelling "haste self" effects...isn't the difference between +40 and +50 not a whole lot?
On 22.9.2005 05:50 wrote: I suppose you rightly guessed that!
Usually the haste self spell has higher priority, but if your base speed is enough fast already (or, in other words, if you're already so fast that your temporaly speed is not very effective), then they will not bother to dispel it.
