This is what I've been up to for the last little while, carpeting Angband with dead Nightmare-mode Bards, trying to get one going.
I finally realized that if a Sexy character that isn't terribly good in melee runs straight to the Yeek caves, they can almost always make it before the townsfolk catch up. Then hang out until making level 4 or 5, and the townsfolk aren't a problem anymore.
You can tell this is 1.7.0 from the list of uniques killed. Not only is there a list, but Mauhur is on it. Yes, Mauhur. Yet another orc unique.
MusicSmith started as a Beastman (Beastwoman, really) and I scummed for a Chaos Patron, getting Balaan, which was nice as, IMO, he's one of the best ones. Starting polymorph self-ing once she had good stats and got to clevel 23 or so (high enough so that becoming a half-Titan wouldn't knock her below level 18, and thus unable to polymorph further. Learned my lesson on that one a while back.). Beastmaster really isn't a very good race for a Bard, and she had lots of good mutations already, so it was time for a change. I was hoping for half-Titan, Archon, or Vampire, but when Kutar came up on the very first try, I decided to stick with it. Plus, she became a MALE Kutar, and thus a "Sexy" male, which you don't see very often.
Within a couple of levels, I was finally able to force myself to go to Zul and purge mutations until the Chaos Patron was gone. The purging was painful, losing extra legs and Resilient, two of the very best ones, but at least he kept White Aura, Telepathic, and Limber.
Here's a question for anyone reading: Why does Musicsmith have innate FA? Neither Bards nor Kutar get it innately, and I didn't think that Sexy characters did either. Is it from a mutation? Precise and Forceful movements, maybe? Any ideas?
On 11.10.2005 23:08 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: I think this is the first time I've gotten White Aura, other than with a "Lucky" character, and its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Nightmare mode characters appear to get noticeably worse drops than characters in normal mode, but with White Aura, the loot is great.
Tengu and Death Swords produced Fiona, Totila, two swords of force, a falchion of melting, and a sword of sharpness. Bought a decent ring of slaying right after this dump, so he decided to go with Fiona.
On 11.10.2005 23:12 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Wait, not Totila, that was in the Mimic Quest along with Paurhach. I meant to say the randart saber.
On 11.10.2005 23:31 Mars wrote: You can also tell from the version stamp :p. Pretty funny to see a sexy male, too! Now hope that the swimsuits don't come with thongs only ;).
According to the Zang spoilers, the FA is from that very mutation you named.
On 12.10.2005 02:20 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Ah, ha! I never knew that. Thanks for solving the mystery.
On 12.10.2005 17:56 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel:28, dlevel:24) Got to level 28, picked up Doomcall, and practiced it to MA status. Got CHR up to 18/220 right around then thanks to some nice finds (Numenor is no Gondor, but its still nice for a Bard) and scummed for Ishikawa Goemon and his lovely katana.
Once that was all completed, MusichSmith screwed up his courage, gathered his supplies, and headed down the steps to level 24, while repeating the mantra "Anything but Gachapin, anything but Gachapin, anything but Gachapin..."
The RNG, in its infinite trickiness, granted the wish. The dlevel 24 monster was not in fact Gachapin.
It was Bleys. DOH!
On 13.10.2005 00:25 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel:31, dlevel:37) Quick update, as I feel like death approaches, for some reason. Checked out a butterfly vault on 37 and actually managed to kill some of the monsters (Bison, Eol, and that stupid Bat, and teleported quite a few more away. Finding a stack of rods of teleport other for sale in the BM was hugely useful), making off with Aranruth, Isildur, and the falcon sword of shocking, most notably. Then found a second vault on the same level, but had to teleport away when it proved to contain multiple ethereal dragons.
Falcon sword is a disappointment, as I was hoping for an ego that would have boosted the pval. A Falcon sword of Pattern with +4 blows would have been very nice.
Mostly doing what Bards do best: clear pits. Didn't even realize Bert was there. Thought it was just a really durable troll until I saw the corpse. That bodes well for later.
On 13.10.2005 00:41 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: Wow! I know you are encumbered, but -1 speed in Nightmare mode? Ouch!
I was thinking a Sexy Ninja might do OK in this build, since Superstealth should still be useful, no? Plus they start out with +3 speed and by CL20 they should be equal to the +5 speed boost that all monsters get.
Still, I find regular mode challenging enough at the moment ... I'll leave the bigger and greater challenges to you :-)
On 13.10.2005 13:08 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Would superstealth still work even with everything already awake? I'd also be a little concerned about the ninja's low damage output. The Serpent really wouldn't be all that much different, but the other high-end uniques would be tricky (Oberon's got like 21k hp).
On 13.10.2005 17:03 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: Superstealth is still useful. Sure every monster is awake, but with Superstealth, they still can't see you all the time, and you can still strike from the shadows for critical hits. Probably Combat is a better personality than Sexy though.
Nightmare mode is insane, Elliott! Why are you doing this to yourself? ;-)
On 13.10.2005 17:49 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel:33, dlevel:40) Continuing to creep along. Loaded up on staves of starlight for the dlevel 38 quest, just in case I drew Malekith. Malekith was indeed on the level, but Fafner was the quest monster.
After fighting a running battle with a variety of 30-40th level uniques (including Malekith, interestingly enough), finally found Fafner who was chillin by himself down in a corner. Perfect spot to take him on, and MusicSmith was up to the task. Fafner dropped Tetsu-Geta, which I love for Nightmare mode (I'd prefer Shiva's Avatar, but there's no rush).
Shortly afterwards, Musicsmith stumbled across that randart pike. Acid AND forcebranded! Yea, BABY! It chews through mana like that little japanese guy at a hot dog eating contest, but it averages over 600 damage/round when the acid brand kicks in.
On 13.10.2005 17:50 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Why do it? Because its there, of course.
On 13.10.2005 19:20 avengerofmang@gmail.com wrote: Do you ever plan to do a full ironman mode game, including nightmare mode, unusual rooms, ironman downward, etc.?
On 13.10.2005 20:33 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Hmm. An interesting challenge. I see a few problems with it. You'd need to have a character capable of creating its own food and light (hobbit ninja?), plus, they'd have to be REALLY self-sustaining, because you wouldn't be able to scum for supplies very effectively. Finally, the character would have to be immensely powerful to have any chance of surviving the first level or two. Even with that, you'd lose many, many characters before really getting traction.
On 13.10.2005 23:13 Elliott946@aol.com` wrote: (clevel:34, dlevel 44) Failed Baphomet, but it was a nasty level. Lots of 40th or so level uniques and summoning undead (Dwar, Iron and Master liches, Kavlax, Beld, death knights, and an undead pit). Found Baphomet, and might have been able to take him one-on-one, but couldn't even get to him.
Kavlax is proving to be a major pest. All those breath weapons are a major problem for someone who is both slow and has lots of resistance holes.
In a potentially game-making find, however, Gachapin was kind enough to drop Rohirrim AND Ulmo AND the Leather Jacket of Shiva's Avatar! Never found the jacket before, and while swapping it in would solve many problems (the lighter weight would be a big SP boost at the very least), it would cost both rPoison and rDisenchantment to do, and losing rPoison would pretty much mean death.
So, all that great stuff sits in the house, while Musicsmith hunts for a source of rPoison. Now, if Ulmo actually had Slay Undead like its description sort of implies it does, then I'd go for the Haunted House and then Water Cave to get a ring of rPoison, but it doesn't, and I don't think Musicsmith is up to a Spectral t-rex quite yet.

Two big back-to-back finds were Frakir (thanks, Scatha!) which finally provided the rPoison I was looking for, and then a giant pit produced a scroll of acquirement which generated Fingolfin! Musicsmith's offense is looking pretty good these days. That pike is just a beast against anything lacking rAcid.
I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of Nightmare mode, though the last time I said that, the character was oblierated immediately afterwards.
Just to inspire jealousy in any Crusade-casters out there... check out the TWO copies of Wrath of God Musicsmith has found already. Of course, I'd happily trade them both for one of the later Bard books. I'm collecting 3rd and 4th books from other schools just to torture myself.

Note that I didn't say "Ready for the Cloning Pits", because I expect it to be horrifically bad. Since its Nightmare mode, Wahha-man could easily spawn, which would pretty much make the quest impossible, and even a garden variety bad result (Jack of Shadows, for example) would also probably mean failure.
Heck, even if nothing bad shows up, he'll probably fail it anyway, recalling out while fleeing desperately from huge mobs of aggravated hydras. Should be exciting.

Cloning Pits is proceeding better than expected so far. Started with the melee monsters to create a safe haven, and have picked off all 3 Bokrugs and Queen Ants, plus a Dagon and an It. The random monsters proved to be nothing serious, though one of them could prove to be a huge boon. A giant flea spawned, and I've let it breed to the point that the SW corner of the map is a solid mass of fleas. Musicsmith tries to take a few fleas along when fighting other monsters, so that they fleas will reproduce and thus block summoning. Better idea in concept than execution, but at least it makes spotting the Its easier (they're the only spots in the mass of fleas).
On 17.10.2005 22:11 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel:39, dlevel:44) That was pretty darn hard. Went it with 12 Healing, 30+ CCW and heroism potions, 50+ teleport scrolls, and 22 charges of speed on 3 staves. When the battle was over, he had left: 1 of the 2 *healing* potions in the quest, 0 healing and 6 or so CCW and heroism potins, exactly 1 scroll of teleport, and 2 of the 3 staves of speed had been destroyed and the final one was empty.
Nothing terribly difficult was summoned (clearly the most dangerous summon was for a lesser black reaver, but it didn't end up being a serious problem), but having all of the monsters chasing you around at all times wears you down. Plus, they were all so fast that everything was getting double and triple moves on a regular basis.
Fortunately, MusicSmith was able to crush the melee monsters with rather less trouble than I anticipated, and that retreat area was extremely valuable.
Still almost failed the quest at the very end when I realized the fleas were totally out of control and on their way to overrunning the whole area. Soulshriek killed them en masse nicely, but they can fly, so they'd hide behind trees, etc. and then rapidly replace the slain ones.
Managed to clear them out of the right side of the map, but after a couple failed attempts on the left side (and a rapdily dwindling stock of teleport scrolls with which to escape those failed attemps), I realized the problem was the cover. MusicSmith then began a scortched earth campaign in which he used his rods of stone-to-mud and his spit acid mutation to systematically destroy every single piece of cover on the left side of the map, and then use Soul Shriek to push the fleas back. Finally, they were all gone. Final dead flea count: 2,114.

After a tough, tough battle to clear the rest of the monsters out, the sudden realization that the quest might be failed because of fleas, despite Musicsmith being a Bard (a class that absolutely LIVES to kill large groups of weak monsters) who was also wearing Faramir (activates to dispell small life), was darn near heartbreaking.

Probably should have teleported away once the healing ran out and Musicsmith was down to 300 hp, but Ithaqua was down to just 2 bright red stars. If it had stuck with melee, I probably could have pulled it off, or at least had time to teleport away.
Unless things are tweaked in Nightmare mode, my math says that Waterball did almost exactly max damage (51-290 damage and it did about 287).

It's probably a cold comfort, but I found no evidence, that dmg is tweaked in nightmare mode. I also found no evidence, that drops are worse (or different).
Waiting for your next nightmare char..

Seriously, though, I think this was quite an accomplishment. Even to have done the Cloning Pits in Nightmare mode is saying something!
On 19.10.2005 12:53 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Thanks. Definitely a combo of bad luck and high speed did me in.
Ithaqua is speed +35 in Nightmare mode and has 11k hp, so taking him on probably wasn't the best idea. I was only +14, so he got lots of double moves, but with my AC and doubled base resists, most of his attacks didn't hit very hard until that waterball.

On 3.9.2007 02:26 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: THE most? Hmm. This character was a really long time ago, so I'm not entirely sure. The massive flea kill-off probably made them #1. Near the start of the game he killed a lot of white worm masses and white mice, but probably no more than several hundred of each. The exp starts dropping off pretty rapidly around there.
Other than that, Bards are big on clearing pits, but orc pits hardly seemed worthwhile to clear, so his big kill totals were probably various sorts of trolls and giants.
