I assume that this uni broadsword I just found is pretty good--I think I got it from Robin Hood on Angband 6. I'm going to take a stab at the sewers, since I have these wands of stinking cloud. I've only been down there once before, and it didn't end well--a white croc got me, I think.
Can't wait for fail rate to go down on Star Dust. That's a mighty handy spell. OTOH it looks like by the time it's reliable, it is not so strong anymore; but what the heck do I know?
On 26.8.2005 21:57 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: You should buy lots of !oHeroism (it gives a bonus ToHit), and you should also carrying more ?oTeleport for the Sewer Quest. Do NOT let the Blue Ickies breed too much, or else you'll have to abandon.
I'd also walk to Telmora and fight a few Arena fights, to get another !oSpeed.

On 27.8.2005 05:14 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Thanks for the tips. I was so happy with my overall stats that I let the Dex slide, but I am wishing I had more attacks. The broadsword fixes that for now I guess.
Sewer went fine. In my last trip it was actually the gremlins that caused the most trouble--they resist poison, so I had to take them out before they bred. Only the nether worms managed to breed, so the sewer was actually pretty easy.
Of course, I have NO IDEA what to do next. Maybe I will try the arena like you say; I guess orc caves or another few floors of Angband.
On 27.8.2005 05:51 wrote: I'd try the orc camp quest in Angwil.
Some potions of speed, scrolls of magic mapping and your spells (detect evil especially) will be heplful out there. And some scrolls of monster confusion against Golfimbul, maybe?
Or perhaps you can do the 2nd random quest in Angband.
On 27.8.2005 15:50 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Thanks, I'll look into that. But to prove my newbishness: I don't know where Angwil is! =)

Thanks again. I know how to look around the map, but of course nothing is labeled. Anyway, I hiked over to Angwil and easily dispatched the Orcs and the Demons. It was entirely trivial with my sword, except for those two more powerful demons--vile beasts? Whatever. Cleaned up those quests, and now I feel a little more confident. Time for some Angband and Arena.

I don't know much about Heng but I assume finding Five Aces on Angband 16 is pretty rare. And this trump weapon is pretty neat, though not up to my sword I don't think. Angband 24 was Grendel and I just could not do it, so I've failed my first quest. =( That sucker can dish some damage. I did manage to kill a cyclops and find Thengel, which was fun. Next dump will show my arena progress.

BTW, you know you can 'l'ook on the World map, and if you highlight the purple ">" for dungeon entrances, it tells you exactly what each is, as well as the starting level.
I'd recommend going to the Castle before too long.
The 5 Aces, while being a OOD find, isn't actually useful to you. Sell.

The Dragon Lair is a great place for level 25+ characters to pick up exp and equipment they normally wouldn't be able to find for a long time (which is really handy because in Hengband making the jump from level 27 or 28 to level 35 or 36 is, well, not the hardest part of the game, perhaps, but certainly a much bigger hurdle than in other 'bands). Some characters handle the Dragon Lair much better than others, though. Plus, as a player, you'll pretty much have to assume that the first few characters you try it with will get slaughtered while you figure out how to handle it.
Incidentally, your strategy wouldn't have worked with Stormbringer and its extremely nasty in melee (I think you could make a case that, for its level, its the nastiest melee opponent in the game. The Destoyer, for example, is worse, but he's like level 90 or something). I personally avoid that thing until my character can swat it like a fly.

Hurray! Back to dumping my paladin, and this time we're having some serious fun. Dragon Lair skimming has gone well, I like my gear, and I have the 3rd Crusade book. It's not doing too much for me yet, but Holy Aura is nice. I want to try the cloning pits, but I remember there being lots of chaos breathers/casters in there, so I need the res before I go--other than that, I'm pretty well stocked (3 staves of speed).
Quick Q on potion of self-knowledge: my max str and int are low (70 and 90) but my HP is 121/100--is that high? Seems to be. My other stats max at 100-120 (con and wis at 110), but I don't really know what a "good" set of scores would be.
BTW, can you flip cursed items in Heng? And does res chaos give res conf as well? Bah, too many questions. I know just about 0 about this game...
On 11.9.2005 05:11 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: 121/100 is EXTREMELY high! I've never gotten anything over 113/110 myself, personally.
I'd say keep those stats, 18/70 STR is fine, since you have +5 bonus from Race and Class anyway, and 110 CON and WIS are the really important ones.
Rings of RChaos always give RConf as well, but random items with RChaos do not. You cannot "flip" cursed items in Heng, AFAIK, so no Amulet of Destruction trick. Like I said, Heng is *Balanced* ^^
On 11.9.2005 05:13 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: 18/70 STR is bad. I don't think you care about an 18/90 INT, though. 121% life rating is phenomenal. Do not drink !NewLife, as you are good to go. No flipping of cursed items (what does that mean?? You can uncurse them, but they generally will still suck) Chaos stopped giving Conf resistance a while back in Zang ... Don't worry about Heng knowledge. If you have questions, just ask :-)
BTW, I'd hold off on the cloning pits until your damage output is better. 106/round probably is not enough. Perhaps Zantetsuken and your 3 staves of speed would do the trick?? Ishikawa is your friend. He can be found on DL33 of the Castle ...

Blackreaver, do you ToME? In ToME you can "flip" the pval of a cursed item by uncursing it (chance to flip based on your level). In other words, a =Damage -16 can become +16, etc. Glad to see you can't do that in Heng--I needed a break from the ADHD of ToME.
Well, my mission is clear--Castle 33 until I get my katana of apocalypse.

Your stealth is also kinda bad, and your only source of FA is the Ring. I'd say, even with Zantesuken, you're not ready, with only 9 !oHealing. As a Paladin of your level, you really should have AC of at least 100ish..

I may hold off on Cloning Pits a bit, but not for too long. I keep seeing you guys clear it out at 33-35, and I'm jealous. Oh, and I tore up Grendel and the UDC a while ago, but mostly with spells and phasing. That will probably get me into trouble in the pits. Once I train up this katana a bit, I'll have a better idea of what I can do to the clones of those guys.
On 12.9.2005 04:42 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Ahm - you might think it's a funny mutation now but you'll probably want to fix that "attract dragons" mutation before you get in to the serious levels. You might be smack bang in the middle of a serious fight and and have a couple of hostile Wyrms join the fray - definitely not recommended.
With regard to the cloning pits you're just about ready. What you still need though is resistance to poison and perhaps your stealth could be a bit better. Try to get it to superb at least - The cloning pits can go very wrong if too much stuff wakes up early. Having a means of resisting poison is very important otherwise the Gachapin clones will eat you for breakfast. Also I would get rid of the Attract Dragons mutation before you do the quest as they might appear and start breathing and then everhone will start waking up and you'll have a real s*(^tfigh on your hands.
Also remember to take a backup weapon to Zantetsuken as it won't fight the Ant Queens (female) - I made that mistake once and ended up using a crappy standard longsword (+5,+5) which was on the ground next to them at the time...

I'm going to experiment with it and see if I can handle the AC=0 side of it. It may not be possible, but it sure is a slick-o armor. But why is it not in the 1.6.0 spoilers? Was it really just added to the game recently?
On 13.9.2005 01:13 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: It's not an artifact... it's an ego item. Thus, it actually is in the spoilers under Ego Armor.
The Robe of the Twilight, like the Sword of the Twilight, has a very very specific use... it's useful in the Arena, where summons are disallowed, and if you have a spell for Phase Door, Teleport, or Teleport Other, you can continually shoot arrows/magic at the Arena opponent. In everyday play it's very dangerous, as even a group of Forest Trolls could become deadly.
On 13.9.2005 14:52 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Yeah, when you're AC 0, not only do monsters hit you with pretty much every single attack, they also (AFAIK) seem to inflict more critical hits as well.

Twilight experiment is going well. I do unspeakable things to Halfling slingers and Dreads--a room full of them wakes up to my d140 Dispel Evil/Undead, and I take little to no damage thanks to reflect/resists. Also I can still take down Ancient dragons with my Holy Orb, although now they can get my hp pretty low in the process. With a little scooting, I took out an AMHD. So I think I may try the Anti-melee cave...I hadn't thought of that.
And I do so much damage that trolls can't pose a threat as long as I control their approach. Now bigger stuff, that's another matter. Unless I can scoot, there's no way to take on a real melee threat.

Wow the Cloning Pits were a trip. I went in at 36 and came out at 37, but in between...yikes, I wasn't ready for all that. I went up and left, taking out Rogrog (or the other troll? whatever), It and Grendel, and UDCs. I swung right to take out the other troll and Fasolt, but a few Fasolts got away. Jurts got loose, which scared the heck out of me, but I managed to kill them off pretty fast. For some reason the Bokrugs went on a summoning spree and took more effort than I planned on. It really hit the fan from there though. The summoners at the bottom went bazonkers on me. Father Dagon, not too bad--he summoned stuff up to and including Byakees, but Crusade realm is built for dealing with demons. Spammed Dispel Demon, hammered Dagons. A pair of greater basilisks from the Bokrugs got loose in the Ant room, which caused a total bloodbath. The Gachapins summoned hydras and a party started. Unfortunately I had no (good) spells for taking out natural non-evil creatures. Cleanup was a bitch.
The take was fairly impressive--in addition to all the artifacts, I destroyed ten level 3 spell books (gaining Sacrifice but also experience--nifty paladin ability). Now if I could just get poison and chaos from something other than rings, I could really strap on some killing power.

For me anyway, the measure of how well the Cloning Pits went is how bad the hydra vs fire ant melee is by the time I get to them. Unless the run goes perfectly, it'll be going on. Its just a question of how bad it is, because you have to wade through it to get to the Queen Ants and any remaining Gachapins.

If you get to the end game, and you've got great speed from other places, then maybe you can think about switching back, but at this stage its a no brainer. I believe they activate for haste as well, so while (+5,+5) and a speed of +4 is nice and a worthwhile reward for the Cloning Pits, a hasted speed of +25 is MUCH better.

A fairly new kit. My Str is at max, Con is 1 away. I'm sort of at a loss as to where to go--I'll probably fiddle in Dragon Lair and Angband.

Have you *ID*'ed that heavy crossbow? Many extra-might launchers have a random resist and it might be something useful.
Also, I know this is heresey, but with your speed, resists, and hp, you might want to consider leaving the ring of +Con at home. Instead, swap the ring of rPoison to the other hand, and then equip the ring of extra attacks on your right hand. It would increase your damage output by about 20% and while it would likely cost you 100 or so hp, you should be slaughtering most stuff anyway.

I wish I'd used Elliott's setup for that fight though--the extra damage would have been handy. I only lose about 80 hp with that new setup, so I'll stick to it for now. Launcher issues were solved by sling of Buckland--never thought I'd be so happy to find that thing. Speed and ResBlind=good for me. Also fun is my innate ResFear and the Holy Word spell that I have now that I'm 40.
Now my issue. As you may notice in this dump, *SOMEONE* is draining all my stats. It's Santa Claus. I'm at Angband 54, I can definitely do enough damage to kill him, and I want those crazy drops. My question is, should I kill him now or save him for a deeper dungeon level?

I've held off on Angband 56 after looking at some of the uniques you guys have fought there in your dumps. Since he's fast, has a ranged attack, and is not evil, I don't think I could kill Kenshirou. I've gone back to the Castle for a while--I think I'll try to finish it off.

I practiced with the scimitar for a while, but it doesn't have the killing power of Zantetsuken. Also picked up Judgment Thunder and trained that to Master--not very efficient, but ok damage.
Then it was Kenshirou on Angband 56, and he was pretty rough--needed 3 healing to take him down. He dropped a unique Executioner--which was, of course, Crisdurian. Blah. Also got Rohirrim, but I would lose Nether to gain Sound with it, so I guess I'll hold off.

I clobbered the Royal Crypt--just worked it--and got my first RoS, a +9, out of it. I felt pretty screwed when I didn't get a reward though. If you never pick anything up, do they still give no reward?
Then I did Spawning Pits. Wow. For the first 4/5 I breezed through it, taking out the Qs and hammering their summons with Holy Word. When I got to the Master Q, I needed that +9 speed BIG TIME. I ran in at +40 and started hacking him up. His first summon was Ancient Dragons, one of which was GWoChaos. I thought, no problem--Master Q was only going to take a few more shots, so I took him. And of course he summoned Tiamat (and another GWoC) right before I took him down. I teleported out and began breaking up the pack--dropped one GWoC, then another, then ran down to the altar, killed the rest of the Ds, and waited for Tiamat to get to me. Buffed up, she summoned 2 rounds of Ds (Hell Wyrm included, thanks alot), I took her down and mopped up. The take was pretty modest all things considered, and the level 4 spellbook she dropped wasn't Crusade. Bleh.
So now I have to decide if I want to run with 30 base speed without Str and Con maxed (wear the Balance Scale Mail) or without ResSound...or stay at 21 with all holes covered.

I thought these were Vecna's escorts and tried to take them out, but there were literally 20 of each. Didn't realize there was a pit of them nearby! Second time down was more reasonable, and I took him out.
Much more interesting was Angband 75. I saw a big vault (long vertical rectangle) cutting the level in half, so I Palantired the level--yikes! Klingsor, Benedict, Phoenix, Tsathgfejkh, Defiler, Witch-King, Biketal of Fire. Ok, let's avoid that vault for a minute..agh! Defiler, Biketal, and Tsath were all in the same normal room outside the vault! Hahah. I stopped screaming like a girl and mowed them down, along with the cyberdemon and a few other U escorts. While killing those three, battle broke out in the vault and the Phoenix teleported out at 2 stars...right next to me. Bam! Now for the vault...Take down Klingsor first, but he summons Dio Brando while Benedict is running down the hall toward me. Kill Brando, but now I've got undead swarming about, so I regroup and clear the area. Benedict is wanted, and I make sure to kill him in a safe zone (no blood curse), then go back for Witch King, who brings out Nazgul like mad, and a GWoC from the vault lets loose some Ds all around me, and now the Black Reaver is loose...
My holy powers got a workout, that's for sure. When the dust settled I pillaged the vault and ended up with a nice stash of stuff. I tried a fairly elaborate gear-switch to get reflect into my setup, but I can't make it work. So...

Maybe if I didn't need a shield anymore...

I was seriously over-thinking things, worried about perfect gear, clearing uniques, making sure I didn't die on my first try at beating Heng. Then, after fleeing Azriel AGAIN, I realized how silly this was. Ran down without about 10 each of healing, *healing*, speed, and restore mana and just blasted him. Used about 5 of each of my healings, and ended up running him down while he was teleporting for his life. Actually killed him with a DI. He rewarded me by dropping crapola.
After taking him, I cleared the black dragon pit below him and scored 2 !Life, giving me a handy total for the Serpent. I will try a little more deep Angband scumming for a few uniques and items, then I'm putting on my +12 =Speed and going for broke.

If you are something like a vampire, a Dunadan, or a Balrog, etc.... do not mess with it. some critical hit with sharpness with slaying will inflict instadeath for sure.
On 30.9.2005 02:28 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Heheh. I compared weapons with it--my max damage with slays is well over 2000. I was close to trying it against that %$# Angel, Azriel, but common sense got the better of me. Anyway, does it check against your AC, or does it just deal the damage to you directly? If you could "avoid" the attack...heh, anyway, I don't plan on using it. It shore is purdy tho.

For both Shuma and Cantoras, my Crusade spell was extremely useful--they didn't teleport, my paladins controlled the summons, and I could always step back into the bunch to heal up. I'm getting to like it more each time I use it, although it's just a glorified meat shield. One thing though--there's not much point in having 25 Ulta-Elites, if you get lucky enough to get that many. I just dismiss until I have a number that will surround my enemies but not have anyone stand idle.

The "pin them with summons" strategy worked on Chthulu, just like with Shuma and the rest. Interesting if I can make it work on the Serpent...

After a worthy contest, Anabasis demolished the Serpent! In the final scene, we were surrounded by an ocean of summons, both his and mine, and my final round of attacks brought him to death's door. Then Morgoth and Co. watched in astonishment as the Serpent destroyed itself on my Eye for an Eye! I booked it out of there and destructed all the dungeon guardians that came running after me. Sifting through the remains brought me Gil-Galad and of course the slick combination of Grond and the Crown. I finished with 4 *healing* and 9 life left in hand, and perhaps more crucial, only 4 restore mana (upkeep of an army is tough!). My base speed was a laughable 22, but the Crusade strategy worked so well that it didn't matter.
But I couldn't bring myself to retire without at least LOOKING at Hell and scumming around the world learning a few more tricks. Next dump (promise!) will be a retirement dump with reflections on the character. I hope.
Hurray for me! =)

Took a peek at Hell and deeper Angband, but couldn't find a reason to care about either one. It might have been fun to play with ?Artifact, but I failed to get either one--I didn't suspend the GWoP like blackreaver. Anyway, on to the final comments:
Paladin is a really, really neat class. Like I mentioned earlier, you bounce between spellcaster and melee, and you do pretty darn well with both. It really is the evil-smiting class: at low levels you have the dispels which work very well on things like slingers, dreads, orcs, trolls, giants. Paladins get a discount on Holy Word, which they gain at level 40 (before judgment thunder) and they get to 3% fail with it. Holy Word is baby Divine Intervention, and it is really powerful against rooms. The healing function (100) is nice, as long as it's used continuously. Once you get WoG, however, you turn into a total killing machine. There was only one time I was ever in any danger at all once I could cast all my WoG spells (double moved by Serpent and Morgoth). The distintegration balls are fun, Armageddon is fantastic, DI and Crusade are must-see-to-believe powerful. AND I was terrific in melee as well, which means I probably never took full advantage of the powers of this class, it being my first time through the game. A more seasoned player could probably do even more impressive things.
The weakness of the character was definitely natural non-evils and goods, but unlike a High-Mage, I had direct combat to plug that hole. Kenshirou was tough, Azriel was borderline unkillable (too much effort to be worth it), and Nodens...well, I only tried him a few times and gave up. Never tried the Unicorn. If you want to kill *every* unique in the game, you'll need a lot of resources, that's for sure. But if you want to purge evil, Crusade realm is the way to go.
Two side comments: 1. destroying lvl3 spellbooks is a nice source of xp at midgame (2500 per), and it gives Sacrifice if you are into virtues. I k'd every book I saw, and it must have added up to 250,000 xp by the end of the game. 2. If you are into virtues, watch out for DI. The first time you cast it on a pit of dragons, it makes them all flee. The second time you cast it, you'll lose 1 honor per monster fleeing! My Honour went from 120+ to 0 in about 5 seconds. Of course by the time I finished the game, I had regained 40 just from hacking up bad guys on Angband 99-100.
I have created two new characters: a Samurai and a Death Paladin. I'm working on the samurai now.

If you liked the play stile, u should try Demon Chaos Warrior... with the summon demon spells, staves of haste monster, u can get an army of demons stronger than knights before fights, and better, when things get hairy enough to make u teleport away, u can then explode pet (i killed several uniques this way)
Ill try soon a Fearless (love MDs) pala...
