Forget resists for a while.

Try to get this equipment:
1. leather scalemail
2. best helmet, boots and cloak
3. fully enchanted longbow
4. two good rings of protection

This is to have as much armor, and non-magical attack as possible for a low weight.

When you have 40+ armor, hunt orcs to find the Phial, a good melee weapon (westerness, extra attacks, or an artifact dagger), and maybe some other early artifacts.

Good spells to get early:
- magic missile (a must)
- detect monsters
- find traps/doors/stairs
- teleport
- stinking cloud (breeders)
- spear of light (jellies+some orcs)
- cure poison (may save your life)
- satisfy hunger
- identify
- frost ball, fire ball

Wands, staves and rings are your main source of income until you get identify.

For a long time you only need the first two spellbooks.

Keep unwanted ego weapons in your home, to sell when you see something you really want to buy.

Sleep monster is very nice to choke a horde of orcs following you down a narrow hallway.

Get a nice high damage weapon weapon for smacking around smaller creatures, you'll never know when something comes up that requires all your mana.
