Trying to win with a weapon using possesor while not scumming the Sandworm hole. First time I've ever had a character push through the Gondolin Trolls primarily using melee. Went easier than expected thanks to that life draining spear. Also had the interesting experience of failing the very first Melkor quest (second time in a row I've done that), but was drained enough exp to lose a level during the temple search. When making the level back by drinking a potion of restore life levels, Melkor gave him another quest! I thought that wasn't supposed to happen. Anyway, succeeded in that one, but haven't gotten another one yet.

I had found the Ring of Precognition once before, but it was by a Lost Soul who managed to die before IDing it. I was very surprised looking over that character dump.

So far, its intriguing, but I'm not sure how much it will effect play. Should be interesting.

Ent Loremasters have a lot of staying power and when combined with great luck in finding weapons with drain life, this guy really hasn't run into too much trouble despite being rather offensively challenged.

I figured a unique Thunderlord might be the best possible body, so he tanked Trone for a while, hoping he'd eventually summong a unique T-Lord. Marda popped up before too long, so I killed them both, but neither dropped a corpse.

The only quest that has been a problem so far was FF for Shamblers on Mordor 64 or so. They breathed a LOT and quite hard. Ran into a row of them and a few of them breathed. 1400 hp in one round despite having rElectricity. Yikes.

Artsi's body works quite nicely. Great Hp, Speed, and inherent powers, enough inherent powers to be useful (summon demon, teleport, and mana ball to clear out junk on the floor), and easy to see on the screen.

Regarding bodies being easy to see on screen, there is an option to hilite player with the cursor, which helps alot for possessors.

Stormbringer is a great weapon, but incredibly maddening if you've forgotten to bring the Anchor along. Found a big vault on Erebore 72 and Glaurung was enjoying the company of Ancalagon, Atalch-Nacha, Pazuzu, and the Unicorn of Order plus lots of wyrms and greater demons. They all have lots of hp, which means lots of opportunities for Stormbringer to teleport them away before they die. Grrrr. At least curse remains in effect, so even if by the time I find them again they've healed, at least they're moving at speed -10 or so.

The ring of precognition has totally changed the way I'm playing. I do the side quests, but levels are now all about finding the interesting item that was precog'ed. "Cubragol is here somewhere, eh? Ok, well I guess I'll be clearing that jelly pit after all." The good levels turn into treasure hunts trying to find the interesting item(s). Hopefully one day Stronglimb will find a weapon that does as much damage as that beautiful axe he broke on Dawndeath's head. Sigh. Mormegil would make up for it.

Mostly, this post is to high-light that nifty drum he just found. +6! I've never seen a +6 instrument before.

Wow. ToME is a cruel game, but that might have been the cruelest thing that's ever happened to one of my characters.

So Stronglimb is clearing out that vault at the bottom of Erebore and he's awfully thorough about it. Why? Because the ring of Precog said a suit of Power Dragon Scale Mail is there somewhere and the rest of the level is cleared.

So the vault is nearly done. Turns out Neil, Yig, Hastur and Jack of Shadows were in that vault along with the other folks, but only two sections are left (which are seperated by patches of mountain) and there'a a Wyrm in the last section, so I'm pretty sure he's got the PDSM.

StrongLimb has detected traps a million times and the second to last section is empty dirt. Except, its not. Its lava with a dirt colored trap on it. A trap of drop everything! And there's nowhere for it to go so it scatters all over the level. "(Expletive deleted)!"

So he teleports out of the vault and starts slowly recollecting his stuff. The Mattock of Nain is one of the things that's scattered so he's lost his ability to climb mountains, which really hurts because the level has lots of sections that are only accessible by mountain climbing.

After regaining everything that's in the accessible areas, he uses Artsi's teleport ability to start randomly teleporting all over the level, hoping to land on the seperated areas. Finally, after great effort, all the outlying areas are clear.

But Stronglimb is still missing a bunch of stuff, most notably Nain (and Cubragol). Its almost all artifacts that are missing, so they must be in the vault somewhere, which is blocked by mountains! He can't get to them! Or to the PDSM! I've never found one before in the game, Stronglimb was 3 squares away, and now it might as well be on the moon along with a half-dozen irreplaceable pieces of equipment. That's incredibly cruel.

At this point, I lose my mind a bit. I mean, he's still got the Ring of Precog and some of his equipment so its not like all is lost. But I intentionally disincorporate him, because Souls can pass through mountains and his soul is going to go hunt down Nain and see if it can be recovered. The Vault is totally clear except for that last Wyrm so it should be fine, right?

Except a group of Halfling slingers apparently spawned in the early part of the vault while Stronglimb was collecting his gear. Sigh. And he was doing so well, too.

On 30.6.2004 17:56 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Ok, disincorporating was obviously stupid, but it was even worse than that. Yeah, he couldn't recover all his gear, but while hunting for it he found Belthronding and the Arkenstone on newly spawned monsters he had to kill to get other equipment. How lucky was that?

I guess I just couldn't stand the thought of losing that PDSM.
