Well, it ain't Sting at CL1, but it ain't bad. Zantetsuken's replacement outshines the original, I think, and that's not easy to achieve!

I finally did the Mimic's without FA just so I could get to the Tengus and the FA reward. Now, I stupidly play without confusion resists just so I can keep my hard won ring of damage.

Waiting on =NetherResistance for the Barrow Downs, and about 100 more hp for the Lonely Mountain.

Hmm ... The quest is much harder now, but still not so bad. Without my speed, I probably would have been in trouble, so I might add a tad more cover. Still, the quest should not be a gimme ...

And the Vault, well that was 100x harder than the Barrow Downs. A stupid Cherub woke up and went absolutely bonkers summoning. Plus a pack of nexus hounds, and I barely escaped with my life. Not with 2000hp could I have completed that one! Wow! Maybe if I had a !Invulnerability?

So, I'm itching for Smaug, but with telepathy already acquired, its best to be a bit more patient.

Chengband also has doubled xp requirements for this build over Hengband ... That seems a bit harsh, don't you think?

On 27.12.2011 19:46 dzhang wrote:
With a Mighty (-1) Shadow Fairy (+6) Rogue (+5), you should have more than enough Stealth to do Barrow Downs by now, especially if you swap in the Elven Cloak for an extra +3. My Hermes Psion started with +5 Stealth, and did the quest with little trouble with a +4 Elven Cloak, even without RNether. As long as you don't need to wke everything up right away, the quest is pretty manageable.

Regarding XP requirements, I don't really mind the current settings, basically I hit the wall at clvl 29-30 instead of 32-34 like before, but not much else is changed for early and late game. But if you do, then maybe we can have a birth option called Quick Mode where all XP requirements are cut by 1/3? Maybe lop off 1/3 from the Score, not that anyone pays attention to that.

On 27.12.2011 19:55 dzhang wrote:
Alternatively, maybe it's that Personality requirements are too stiff when multipled with high Race ones? We could, for example, make all the Personailty XP requirements halfway closer to 100%.

On 27.12.2011 20:18 chris wrote:
I just fired up Hengband 1.7.2 and was shocked to see that a Half Titan rogue requires the same xp as a Shadow Fairy now. A lot of players (including myself) would avoid Half-Titans in heng due to their high xp requirements as they force lots of grinding in the mid game and make the game much more tedious. The time I played Larry Logrus was an exercise in pure patience and I even put him on hold for quite a while as it was so boring.

Yes, certain classes (notably melee guys) will notice this less. But weaker race/class combos notice it more (This guy is OK with it, just slightly annoyed ... Melee for over 300 speeds things up).

I think we broke the balance with this one ...

BTW, you forgot to divide your shadow fairy stealth numbers by 2.

On 27.12.2011 20:26 dzhang wrote:
Hm... but I do feel Race and Class XP should be multiplied rather than added, so I'm more in favor of cutting XP req across the board (or decreasing XP of personalities) rather than going back to the old system.

What do you mean by dividing Shadow Fairy stealth by 2? On the Heng spoiler site it says it's +6... did you change it to +3 at some point?

On 27.12.2011 20:32 dzhang wrote:
Also, in Heng Rogue xp was only 25%, and I think we both agree Rogues are easier than Warrior-Mages, Bards, Red Mages, etc. So part of it is that in Heng, balance for Rogues was bad.

On 27.12.2011 20:57 chris wrote:
If you single wield with a rogue, they are less powerful than all three classes you mention. Even dual wielding, they are much weaker than a bard. For the end game, bards are one of the top power classes!

Rogues are convenient and start with high dex so melee comes more quickly. Also, stealth is fun.

Shadow Fairies get 1/2 stealth if their equipment aggravates ...

On 27.12.2011 21:14 dzhang wrote:
Er... I've never won with any of those three classes, so my opinion may be biased. But you really think Rogues are stronger than Warrior-Mages? Rogues have 2 more HD, better melee skills, better stats, way better stealth, and equal or more melee blows... the only thing Warrior-Mages have going for them is that they can switch magic schools.

On 27.12.2011 22:20 chris wrote:
I was thinking more along the lines of Craft Rogue versus Craft Warrior-Mage.

But in general, Warrior-Mages can pick any realm, get 2 realms, can learn any spell. Rogues get their spells later (if at all) with higher fails. (My Warrior Mage killed the Unicorn of Order with Hellfire!)

Sure, rogues are better at melee, but I think I said that ... And if they can get their dual wielding going, then yes, they are better. Scum for berserk activation, and then yeah, it isn't close any more ...

For the Red Mage, you have Healing, Double Resistance, Haste, Dimension Door, Glyph of Warding, and Word of Destruction. Good detection, good utility. The only problem is no dual wielding and no good offensive spells.

For a bard, it ain't even close ;)
