OK, I toned down artifacts a bit more. Fewer powers. Fewer resists. But more likely to pick up random stat boosts. I also added a wizard command (in 0.0.48) to re-roll all the replacement arts in your equipment and inventory with a single command (Ctl+A then 2) to allow testing. So while Dorin had 38 resists from gear, shuffling brought that down to 24, 24 and then 18. This should make it harder to cover all resists, and hopefully stats won't be so poor.

Here's a test guy, my first Chengband spectre. First thing was to tone down the passwall biff, which was just too darn large. I cut the damage in half, and it is still 3x the damage in Hengband. 6x Hengband damage was insane, and more annoying than anything as you need to stop to rest every 10 steps or so. The main spectre biffs are the -2 con, the lack of FA, and biggest of all, no more intrinsic telepathy. The passwall damage was just a bit of gravy on that anyway.

And what does this guy find off the bat, but a wicked cool Thengel replacement. I can tell that the code tried to grant immunity (at DL20) since it picked up one of the immunity consolation packages (FA, SI, Lv, HL). Also, failure to grant immunity gives a few more resists, and those certainly helped boost the total. A freakish helm, but I don't think we should remove completely the possibility of early goodness. In wizard mode, I could not reproduce anything nearly so good on 100 re-rolls of Thengel, so I just got lucky.

I tried for a Zantetsuken super katana, but Ishikawa stiffed. Jerk. No matter, Nothung came with +2 blows (not much else) and I'll stick with that.

So, how freakin' tough is King Koopa? Normally, I don't notice the guy since I'm usually killing him when he is camouflaging himself as a Great Venom Wyrm, much to my annoyance. And if I'm looking for venom wyrms, I'm not noticing the giant turtle. But for my DL28 quest, his 120 AC, 1500hp and 130hp or so fire breath was very attention grabbing. I only had 220hp, and he breathes 1 in 2. So, if I got to attack him at all, it was just 1 round and I could not even put a dent in him. Well, at least he isn't +10 speed like Gachapin, who breathes for more damage as well. I was giving up on the guy when I stumbled onto some quartz veins that I farmed, gained CL25 and picked a con boost netting 30 extra hp. In the end, this and my weapon skill was enough, but I had to do some serious Spectre cheesing, stepping thru walls and then backing up to safety. About 40 runs thru my hp to do the job, which means I took about 5000 damage from the guy, just to dish out 1500, but I think he was regenerating quite a bit! Plus, with this tactic, the monster always gets a free first move, so its not so wise. He dropped Arvedui ... I mean, Chaos Lord! Another nice replacement :)

While we are at it, Spectres are no longer immune to nether. That is a huge ability, IMHO. I'll let them keep nether resistance, though ...

I grew tired of being so outclassed on the Angband quests (even Nappa was a close call) so I grabbed a poison needle off Shelob, and headed for the lair. A !Polymorph gave a miracle roll: Resistance! And one of the early amulets came in with huge combat bonuses (It would have been immunity ... this is another of the immunity consolation prizes). So even biffed (half normal powers) goodness is possible. But as you can see from The Amulet 'Aalbandkhil' {Cf} that one should no longer expect everything to be good.

I'm switching back to normal melee so that Smaug, Scatha and similar ilk can get the bashing they so deserve.

Here we go again: Courting Death! I've loaded up for the highest AC and stealth I can muster, grabbed my stash of _*Destruction* and moseyed on over to R'lyeh to meet my maker. Lacking Shards resist and running into Combat Echizen is a sure why to die ... But I was safely nestled in the walls at the time. Rockets do what, 900? At least when Cyberdemons fire them. Combat's might be a little less deadly ...

The randart ammo looks kinda cool. :) After the competition I'm going to download the newest. But are the randarts you roll as good as the 'true' forms om them? The sword you have looks like Sting, but its sucks in comparisment. :)

Ow poor Black Arrow of Bard. 1d4 just looks sad...

Its best not to compare with the originals ... Often they are worse. Sometimes they are better. I think my initial mistake was in trying to make the replacements come out as powerful as the originals. The result was that they were too powerful! Oh not if you just look at one at a time, but for your entire kit, it was just too much.

This go around is a bit on the weak side, but still I have pretty good resistance coverage. The Cloning Pits was smooth. Let's hope the Old Castle is similar.

I spotted a dice boosted falcon sword in one of my favorite vaults: The for square excellent object tiny cross. I had to face down Shuma-gorath, whose first move was 400hp of nastiness (I had 760 at the time). Back up, heal, try again. Less damage this time, and I teleported him away. The take:

The Falcon Sword 'Melted-in Balm' (3d7) (+18,+22) (+2 attacks) {At;AcPo;Lu|APM}

I'm good for 1200 damage per round on melee, but once again, I face the woes of force depletion. As a rogue, this is significant, so I'll keep looking. But this is my first somewhat decent weapon, so I thought I would share :)

Damage is now 1733 per round since my first Ring of Extra Attacks was +3. But with just 556hp, I am begging to be squished!

After playing a long time without my extra attacks ring, I'm finally able to swap it back in. Con, Speed, and Resists are hard to cover, but I finally have a satisfactory kit. Only +17 base speed really puts in question the ability to not need 2 rings of speed. We'll see.

I'm still in quest of better:
[1] Weapon
[2] Boots
[3] Gloves
[4] Armor
[5] Shooter
[6] Light
[7] Cloak

Fingolfin came out nice, but it is not suitable for spellcasting, which definitely resonates poorly with my force weapon. Its funny, but every weapon I try on now seems uber-weak, and few do even 30% of the damage of my falcon sword, so perhaps a weapon improvement is just wishful thinking on my part?

I'm going much weaker with a vampiric dagger just so I can kill stuff. With Force, I run out of spell points and then need to flee/rest and generally, while my damage is 4x what it is now, I am less effective. Don't worry, I'm stockpiling !RestoreMana for the end game.

A typical high caliber unique like Wahha or Atlas is taking 20+ healing, which is crazy. So, even with 9 _Healing, I'm playing one and done with the big boys. The Destroyer is most definitely locked up in a quest some place and I'm wondering how many healing he will take. He can't possibly do more damage than Wahha, can he? That guy hit me in melee for almost 700 damage at one point!
