Trying the jeweler build again, and ran into a bit of luck - the guaranteed first forge turned up enchanted, and I had just *barely* enough xp to pull off gloves of smithing +3, for an effective smithing of 18 with this forge, and 2 uses for rings of accuracy. RNG probably has something very.... special.... in store for this guy. Rings of accuracy may be in need of some mild nerfing and/or cost, but until the next update...

Wow! I am seriously impressed by that start. I've once had my first forge enchanted with a smith character, and I don't think I made nearly as good a use of it as you did here.

I don't think the issue here is entirely about rings of accuracy -- at least later on I think a ring of damage +1 tends to be better than a ring of accuracy +2 -- but it's possible ring-forging in general is a bit good because of what you can make compared to what you can normally find. On the other hand, getting to Smithing 18 at the first forge is really special, and deserves a decent reward.

I look forward to hearing how this continues.

Thanks, it's been fun so far...

Found my 2nd forge at 350', debated what to make, but decided not to go artifice quite yet... made an amulet of grace (debated just upping smithing, but more grace is always good), ate my lembas (here's hoping I don't run into food trouble), and cranked out a crown of majesty. With that and Elbereth, I should be able to control most fights for a good long while. Debating what to do with my other use... so many slots not yet fully improved. Probably either sprinting or a better shield.

OK, nice. Bear in mind that there are a few monsters who don't understand (and so won't run from) Elbereth, and Majesty scales with your Will, so isn't doing so much at the moment. But as you've probably seen, I've had pretty good success with the fear-as-control technique with my latest character.

Amulet of grace seems a good choice for helping later Smithing. I've sought out Spears of the Vanyar for exactly this purpose before now, too.

My deepest and best so far. All those extra attacks from skills are *NICE*. Dumb move on my part weakened my combat - wore un-IDed gauntlets and waited to try to find a staff to uncurse, rather than biting the bullet and taking the will ability. Not sure if it would've made a difference or not. Got caught running from a giant by an invisible sulrauko in that corridor. Nargil was very nice vs hard to hit things (like invisible monsters), but not enough. Probably should've gone with a bigger weapon and tried to hack through the giant, but I thought invisible + hard to hit should = low hp. Apparently not enough so.

Bad luck here. Though I notice you didn't try singing Elbereth to get out of this one -- it might have worked.

I normally follow the same route as you and try to get by without Lore Keeper or Curse Breaking. I tend not to try on {special} gloves until I have at least one staff which I can't easily identify, but sometimes that's not enough.

Sulraukar do only have 5d4 health (which is pretty low), but they have fairly high protection [3d4] and critical hit resistance, so the easiest way to deal with them is usually big weapons. The Dagger of Nargil wouldn't have been getting as good criticals as normal, but would have helped with hitting and with the relatively high protection value. It can also be worth retreating on the turns where you can't see them, though obviously you had issues with a Giant...

I thought I did have one... turned out to be freedom. Plan was to take curse breaking if I found a forge before finding an uncursing staff. Looking back at it, between Elbereth and my trumpet, I *should* have been able to make the giant run, if I'd used them earlier. Fleeing down corridors as the default defense worked quite well earlier, but tough invisibles obviously change that. Next time, sInvis and/or Exchange Places are priorities to have by 500'.
