Been playing *band for ~15 years on and off, Sil has rapidly become one of my favorites, enough so that I'm actually excited enough to post/comment on it. Here's my 2nd really promising try, a fighter/smith, with an early game strategy based on rings of accuracy. 2100 xp for +4 melee and +4 archery is definitely a great deal, and with an early sword of slay orc and a shield of wrath to get them to come play in the corridors, the early game was a piece of cake. I had been planning on saving xp and waiting for a forge to make artifacts before really taking many abilities, but a very tight spot involving a large group of easterling warriors and orcish archers between me and any escape at 400' nixed that idea. Used most of my potions, and spent a rather long time running around in the dark red, but I made it out.

And of course, Murphy's law being what it is, the first thing I run into after posting does me in... Trap door down = no stairs back. Killed Uldor, but he hurt me badly enough that his guards got me shortly thereafter. If I'd had more consumables left, of if I'd noticed the very nice shield of deflection he dropped (that I was standing on) I might've made it. Prolly should've bashed down the door and tried to run that way, but by the time I though to, I was already in the red, and afraid of getting stunned. I was hoping killing Uldor would demoralize them more than it did. Maybe if I'd gone with Elbereth... Ah well, time to try another.

Wow, it sounds like you've picked up a lot about the game very quickly! I've never thought of that jewellery strategy, and nor have I seen someone deliberately using Wrath before. I had noticed that forging cursed items can also be a technique for identifying them, but hadn't tried it.

Thanks, got the idea for the rings from HallucinationMushroom's build, I've got another try going that managed to take it a step farther, too, due to an unusually lucky 1st forge. The shield of wrath was found, not made - but it's a very well known strategy in most games. Using aggravate to get a bunch of nasties into a series of 1v1 fights, and/or away from the loot that your best damage spell would fry is one of the oldest tricks in the book. If you count real life, it's probably older than books.
