Do I have the patience to actually finish playing a mage? Let's see. The last 3 high level mages I have made have all been abandoned due to boredom, their save files purged to the nether world, never to be resumed. I really regret giving up on Blaster, a shrewd Crusader, so here is my attempt to reproduce. I'm going with Craft rather than Demon, and it is oh so much more effective. But I can't kill non-evil monsters :)

Actually, I can't kill much with my spells. Holy Orb is wonderful, dishing out 100hp to evil doers for 10sp. But for neutral monsters, it only does 33hp, and for good monsters, 0hp. So it is not always useful.

Mages require too much patience in the early game, so I did my usual scum to get a decent "One and Done" kit for the top of the lair. I'm starting to roll now, and I see no reason to change my tactics until CL40 at least. No chance for the Cloning Pits ... Heck, even the Mithril Golem in the arena is way beyond my powers.

I'm clearing a pit of Ancient Blue Dragons and I get the message:
"You have no room for a Crusade Spellbook [Wrath of God]"

After much panic chucking equipment from my inventory, I found room for the book!!! Yay!!! This pit of dragons will probably generate 200+ objects to identify and I only brought 21 charges on my _Perception with me :(

OK, here it is: Wrath of God post! Yippee! Probably the earliest I ever found this book before (actually got it at CL35). So, CL36 gives Armageddon but the real killer spell, Divine Intervention, doesn't come until CL46 :( Holy cow, I can't wait that long!

Lengendary [30] stealth ... Wow! At first, it was just Frakir and Faramir swapped in for Lengendary [2]. But then Crimson showed up. Then Hithlomir. And finally Hagen.

Ninja Mage :)

On a down note, I really wasn't sure how I was going to kill the Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner. He resists all of my spells! Finally, I realized I could probably just melee him, and did so, even though my damage output was a piddly 51 per round, and I don't even want to know what my accuracy was. Jasra was much easier, by comparison ...

OMG!! Feanor! Holy Cannoli :)

And just when I was about to transition to the Anti-melee caves, I stumbled across a GCV (of the lesser sort). With all the dark pits, there were only half as many excellent objects as there should have been, but quite a few candidates for uber artifacts. Alas 2 robes but no Incanus, 2 metal shields, but no Thorin. However, those hard leather boots did indeed turn out to be Feanor, and they were quite tricky to get to, as I had to deal with the Destroyer, Surtur, a Master Q, a Skull Druj and many others. Due to lack of identify, I had to teleport away all that I could, as I could not deal with the onslaught of unidentified crap that still drowns me everytime I don't fight a Storm/Ice/Bile/Hell wyrm :)

OK, I have no incentive for the Cloning Pits now ...

Not too much new to report. RoS +8 and Necronomicon. But really, I had a look at the fail rates and shuddered. Maybe I will reconsider at CL50, but I'm not sure. Passwall in Craft is 86% easier to cast in terms of fail rate, and costs about half as many sp (OK, Wraithform also gives 50% damage reduction and reflection, which is something to consider). Plus, there is the alignment penalty, and within 5 minutes of undergoing a ritual of balance, I was back to being lawful. I am Gandalf, after all ...

So perhaps it is Craft all the way. The only other tempting realm is Nature, but I'm not sure I should part with Passwall. It is a nice combo with Divine Intervention, which is really expensive. Especially for a mage. But passwall and eat magic should alleviate that for most monsters.

Mages don't seem to be powerful enough to kill things without assistance. At least not at this level. So, when I spot something I wish to kill, I throw everything I have at it, including 4 -Disintegrate, 5 -Dragon's Breath, 5 _Power and sometimes 5 _ManaStorm. Plus as many Holy Orbs as I can. At 13 sp a piece, they aren't exactly free. And despite what the spoilers say, mages get biffed on the damage. Killing things without assistance from my wands and staves requires either ample resting (7 runs thru my mana to kill a GWoLaw, but that was back when I resisted sound), or a zap from the Charmed Pendant. I was embarrassed when I took down some low level orc unique but lacked the fire power to kill his escorts! And Bokrug was easy, but his 20+ crocodiles took 8 runs thru my mana to dispatch. I can only handle 2 or 3 at a time with my spells! But that is where passwall comes in ... So no, I don't think I will ever give up Craft :)

Its getting so close, I can almost taste the intervention of the deities. Just another 1.2 to 1.5 million xp ... Should happen any second now :)

Major equipment shuffle. Hitherto, I was using Thranduil just for blindness resistance, but now I play without it. This is stupid, as it is a good way for a mage to die. But I figure for the time being I should be OK provided I keep my passwall up and steer clear of those that hit to blind (like Dio Brando). Really, I just wanted to work a wizardstaff back into my kit, as it really boosts the amount of damage I can dish out before resting.

59 uniques slain. I'm almost done :D

I did it! I killed the Invisible Pink Unicorn!! Man, was that tough. Not only does it resist lightning and light, it is also good. I had some friends with me, including Bramd the Ice Dragon, but the unicorn freakin' spanked him. It wasn't even close. So I couldn't resist finishing of the ice dragon with a star burst. Then I tried Eye for an Eye and melee. Nope! Next, I was going to get Mycen, my other Dragon pal to help me out, but I suspect the Pink Unicorn would win that battle as well ... except maybe for the mana breath if Mycen would be smart enough to try it before he gets blasted down to 1 star by those furious pink hooves. But it dawned on me first to try the Wrath of the God, and wow, it actually worked. I failed like 14 of my first 20 attempts (Actual fail rate 21% ... yeah, right) but then I started getting 4 or 5 successful casts before needing to eat magic. Hide in walls and repeat. And repeat. After 50 or so Wraths of the God (thats like 750 extremely poorly aimed disintegration balls), I got that pink horsey! Yay! The world has finally been rid of the scourge of the evil, the foul, the demonic Invisible Pink Unicorn!!!

I think priests are definitely more powerful than mages, especially if you try to melee as a mage (They are biffed down to only 3 attacks). But mages cast spells better (except for the Life realm) and have Eat Magic, which is extremely useful. Both classes are powerful at CL50, I think. But mages are a lot harder to level up, as killing things with spells only is soooooo tedious.

There ... now I can remove that yucky warrior armor. Actually, I wanted to cover all resistances at this point in the game, including reflection. Mission accomplished. And with an 18/310 int and sustain int, I am fairly resistant to the eldritch horror.

OK, I pushed hard to make it to CL50. Now, I certainly have enough power to win. Its just a matter of being careful (and lucky!) Divine Intervention is now down to 13% fail. But really, when you only get 5 or 6 attempts at a spell in a single run thru your mana, that is frustrating. I had a hard time killing Y'golonac because I went failure happy with my spell, and he kept teleporting away! And then Gothmog showed up, so had to kill that guy first.

So far, I've blown up 20 or so rods with eat magic, which seems higher than normal, but with my low sp, I guess I am eating magic more often than my high mages usually do. In fact, I buff with craft and immediately eat magic to regain sp every single battle ...

I completely obliterated Oberon, avenging my tourist's untimely demise. I mean, it wasn't even a contest. Divine Intervention is so incredibly powerful, and add a dash of passwall and I never even had to heal, and my hp never went below 600. A bunch of eat magic, though ...

The Destroyer was similarly dispatched with a yawn. I just grabbed a beer and watched my knights and angels pummel the big guy. Occasionally, I would toss in a Starburst for good measure.

2 ?ArtifactCreation so far, and the first one worked so well, I'm not sure what to use the second for. BDSM probably ... If I can manage to find a suit. And 3 more uniques will yield another. I managed to kill the 6 wanted amberites without losing a corpse to the blood curse, so the last 3 should be doable if I ever see them.

Oh, heck. Oberon was such a pushover, the Serpent could scarcely be much tougher. I just grabbed all my goodies and went for it. Pretty easy, though he did get me down in the 350hp range a couple of times. Plus, he stunned me a few times with his shatter effect after dispelling my passwall. I was silly, and did my complete buff against him rather than just casting passwall and telepathy, which I don't think he would dispel. But I was paranoid about double resistance with my low mage hitpoints. The big lucky break was that the level had 4 vaults on it, one a big one with permanent walls and Morgoth inside. Good, I didn't have to deal with him being summoned all the time :)
