I think the key for this class is going to be getting lucky and finding good gear early; it will be hard to stay alive otherwise. Good detection is going to be important too, but it doesn't look like he gets too much early on. Or maybe I was unlucky and the shops never stocked the right book.

The tourist books are in the general store which always carries all general store items. The tourist only has three town books. The other chance-realm town book is mainly for the rogue and sold in the magic shop.
Tourists are weak in fighting and weak in magic. They are definetly a challenge class, but human tourists do get a bonus to luck at character creation. Also, don't underestimate the effectiveness of the stunning from the camera flash spell. That's very useful at the beginning of the game. They don't get any monster detection spells, but they are good at detecting everything else. It might be worth buying _detect evil from the magic shop once you have enough gold.
