CL5. DL4. Day 1, 3:33.

After the characters I've been playing, this guy seems like a freaking superman. I grabbed a handful and CLW and OTD (object/treasure detect) and headed on down.

No game breaking items yet, though that rothe tusk is tempting me to wield it.

The paladin was just standing there right next to the stairs, as if waiting for me, when I arrived on DL5. I figured he would curse me to death if I tried to run, so I fought him. Many missed attacks contributed to Arthur's death. That potion of speed, yet to be ID'd.

Arthur number 2 died after being cornered in a dead end by a large kobold.

Arthur number 3 was paralyzed to death by a floating eye which he bumped into after neglecting to refuel his torch, just after finding a wand of confuse monster.

Yeah, the floating Eye was (my) Arthur's greatest enemy for a while. Took out three of his older brothers (#2, #3, #5)

yeah buying some equipment before entering the dungeon makes a big difference, even if it's just a few !CLW. A tourist is a challenge class as it is, no reason to make it harder by not stopping to buy a few things (besides, the tourist is the only class where shopping is actually in-character).

On 25.4.2011 04:22 will_asher wrote:
I just realized when you said this guy feels like a superman, you were referring to the difference made because you always use the standard roller and this character was started using the autoroller.

On 25.4.2011 19:49 buzzkill wrote:
Not just that, but I actually did do some shopping. Just not the most effective shopping. Basically, I enter the nearest store and buy a stack or two of whatever they have that might be useful. In this case it's the magic-scroll shop, and since they have no phase door in stock, it object and treasure detect and a recall. CLW's would be nice, but it's such a long walk to the temple :).

Real life has got me pinned down at the moment. I don't know if I'll get to take another shot at this comp.

Arthur's numbering 4, 5 and 6 were in search of a good start. They played quickly and recklessly without much regard for their immediate survival. None made it past DL5. Two of the three died to floating eyes, and the third to a novice alchemist, his first encounter.

On 28.4.2011 00:26 will_asher wrote:
I don't bother giving him a number until he gets to ~dL10 or else ArthurIII would be something like ArthurXXIV.

Arthur number 7 was killed by a hasted novice warrior.
Number 8 was killed a novice mage after being blinded.
Number 9 was enjoying some success when he encountered the chest mimic on level 2, or maybe 3. He managed to escape but then did something foolish. The mimic was worth 550 XP so he went back to kill it. He thought that if he kept it stunned, then he'd be able to beat it to death at a leisurely pace. Boy was he wrong.

Number 10 had a good run. Sadly, that only means that he made it to DL3/CL4. After narrowly surviving an encounter with a novice mage, Grip, and a small kobold, he decided to climb back to the surface. While looking for the stairs, he encountered some cave spiders, which shouldn't have been such a big deal, but nearly all his attacks missed and when it came time to turn to read one of the un-ID'd scrolls in a last ditch attempt at salvation, he chose summon monster. The robe of vulnerability wasn't helping matters either.

Bug Spray does work pretty nicely on those spiders, if you can only get it to cast. Sadly, Arthur's casting skills are just about on par with his melee skills... not so hot.
